Deadmau5 vs. Disney

I think it wasn't too long ago Ferrari filed a cease and decist against him for his 'purrari' which was a hilarious nyan-cat themed ferrari 458... Which he somehow then decided to comply to, even though it was his own fucking car.

Now I guess Disney is going after him for trying to patent his Mousehead because it looks too much like mickey somehow... So he sent them back a cease and desist for using throwing a fit over it.


I mean, I'm not super huge on his music, it was kinda cool when it came out and now it's stale, but either way this is fucking bullshit haha.

How does the law even allow this crap to happen?

Exactly. I fucking love that part about him. He just does whatever the fuck he wants and has a laugh about it while all these companies bitch about it with seriousness.

I love how Disney sent him a bullshit claim about the Mau5head and he sent back a legitimate C&D because Disney used Ghosts n Stuff in a video without paying the royalties. Disney only wants the rights so they can cash in on the EDM scene since it's absolutely blowing up right now and becoming mainstream.

Can we at least be clear about what's actually happening? Disney has not filed a claim, or alleged trademark infringement, or in any way "gone after" the guy. There are no patents involved.

Deadmau5 attempted to trademark a logo presumably resembling his mouse head. Disney opposed the granting of that trademark as being confusingly similar to their own mark. This is how you protect marks.

What happens to Deadmau5 if Disney wins? Nothing. Nothing at all. His mark simply isn't registered. Which only means if other people use the mark (i.e. if they start making mouse head iphone cases or something), Deadmau5 can't sue them for trademark infringement as easily. That's all.

Oh. I was reading articles on it that never mentioned that at all and completely overlooked that. That's why I see bootleg Deadmau5 tees everywhere.

Source? After reading into this a little more I've found that nobody seems to really have their story straight...

I've heard everything from Disney being the badguy to Deadmau5 to both... as is the case when people start assuming things based on who they have allegiances with.

Blame me for taking a side against Disney.. It's a scumbag company founded by a red scare perpetrating anti semite. ;)

According to some bloke who heard from some bloke, the reason Ferrari filed a c&d is to protect their trademark/font etc... Under EU laws (at least that is what I've been told) they can lose their trademark if they don't actively defend it, Ferrari even made a case against a Ferrari owners group who used their logo. Going after Chinese fakes is difficult so they go after the easy targets, when he put it up for sale it became a commercial item and thus considering that Deadmau5 changed the logo's, they filed the c&d.

It may be b&s, and Ferrari just being elitist prissy bitches.

I mean I don't like Disney either and I can't not like Deadmau5 given that he made that Purrari which is the Grizzlycorn of cars. It's fantastic. But what they're doing here is pretty vanilla. I would advise them to do the same. Actually, even if they're sure they're going to lose, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a corporate policy of always challenging potentially close marks to demonstrate that they're actively protecting their IP. It's not dickishness it's just good sense.

butterslut.techno is such a dead word


Techno is actually a very live and thriving genre, it's just not an umbrella term for all electronic music like many people outside of the scene think it is. Techno has just gone more underground as bigroom house and trance have taken the mainstream, which people then incorrectly name techno.

Speaking of techno, Deadmau5 mostly makes progressive/electro house, not techno, although he recently released a techno track under an alternate name and his Ultra set this year was full of it. It speaks to his fuck the system attitude which I love, and I really hope that he wins this against Disney. Not that I really care, I just think he's a brilliant producer and stays real.

Haha I get how the law works, It's just there were so many competing stories on the issue - stemming from Disney attacking Deadmau5's mask in the first place to Deadmau5 suing Disney over Mickey Mouse...
