yeah I pretty much agree...and unfortunately in the grand scheme of things one civilian life isn't really too significant.

Immense financial backing from extremely wealthy individuals within the Arab gulf and elsewhere + severe and rapid religious indoctrination and propaganda on social media + Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi being militarily trained (amongst other things) by the Mossad (with assistance from the British and U.S secret services) + militants being formally trained in a Jordanian camp a year or so ago (who are now all mostly in commanding positions within ISIS) by U.S, British, and French personnel. The list sort of goes on, but I'd consider those the main components
I kinda find it funny that everyone's so damned surprised this happened. I expected the Iraqi power vacuum to lead to this a long time ago - only I didn't see it entering in from Syria, I suppose.
I really really hope for the Kurds sake, that they will be able to fight off this shit, or at least stem the spread of IS long enough for Turkey, Iraq, and the USA to start supporting them rather than seeing them as separatist terrorists, and even perhaps give them promise of a homeland once this is all said and done... They are the one sane seeming region in that whole area, and are more nationalist than theologically crazy like these IS bastards.

This so much. ISIS is a direct creation of american intervention. What I mean is that the more the US "invades" countries like Iraq, palestine, and afghanistan the more the countries in the region despise us thus creating groups like ISIS and increasing popular support for the taliban. If america could just back off and out completely I believe it would solve most of the problems relating to terrorism and fears we have. America has this ideology that the best defense is an attack, but what we have realized since we've "invaded" is that if we wanted we could easily wipe them off the face of the planet, and thus we have turned our invasion into a military run humanitarian mission with no popular support. The fact is that most middle eastern nations and their respective terrorist groups have little financial backing and little to no ability to attack overseas. Now there's no question that what theyre doing to their own citizens is wrong, but believing that if we don't exterminate them that they will exterminate us is a complete fallacy. If we can just fix the holes, which we have already basically done with the tight butthole airport security, it will not be difficult to defend against these "international threats" everybody is so scared of. I like how everyone thinks that IS is a new phenomenon. Nope. We fought the exact same people in Iraq while we were there 'building democracy.' That's why these guys are so sophisticated tactically; they more or less survived 7 years fighting the world's most advanced military. The solution to IS is not a US but an Arab one. The US can help that come to fruition but US boots on the ground is out of the question. What the US can do is to pressure Saudi Arabia to cut off the funding pouring out of the Kingdom into militant groups like IS, facilitate the creation of an Iraqi coalition government inclusive of Kurds, Shiites, and Sunnis, support the creation of strong democratic institutions in the Middle East, and work to enable UN and ICJ investigations of IS.

As much as Saddam was an idiot, there's no fucking way he'd have allowed ISIS to take any stronghold in the middle east, whether in his country or a neighboring one. In fact, the war in Syria would probably have been far less reaching due to a likely Iraqi intervention to stop it.
To say that the USA would be safer if Saddam's stability was in place would be pretty accurate. Would the people in Syria and Iraq be happy? No.. but do you think they're happy now? Well shit, a lot of them are dead, so I guess that question doesn't matter.
Either way, 9/11 was either a seriously huge security cockup or an inside job (no i'm not jumping on that bandwagon, but one must question any incompetence this big as being of purpose). Is our security great now? I mean, it's not that great, but you know that around 9/11, everyone's on high ass alert around the world. I don't think ISIS has the resources to properly commit any terrorist atrocities outside of the areas they control at this point. Nobody likes them. Not Assad, not Israel, not Iran, not Turkey, not Russia. There's no way in hell they will gain any significant ground without intervention from a regional force. That leadership will be starved out or assassinated before they are able to do fuck all with what they've got.
So from that standpoint, I fully support any effort to NOT intervene in this that we can. We have allies in enemies with this one. We can chill. It's only a matter of time before those idiots get crushed under their own weight.

In regards to the training of Syrian rebels, I should mention that I wasn't implying they were trained by western military for the direct purpose of eventually becoming IS militants, that is just where they've unfortunately been reported to have ended up. That original vacuum of support (financially and otherwise) did properly set them up though, regardless of whether those original donors are still funding them now. The momentum they have gained and just the swarming of mass allegiance they've been given is pretty insane
