What do your parents think of freeskiing

if you still live with or even talk to them, what do they say to you and what do they think

my dad says, "going sideways on metal isnt real skiing, its dangerous and looks stupid"

my mom said "its poor mans skiing, they cant afford to go to hills so they go in cities" after i showed her a video of some urban.

My parents took my skiing when I was 5. Then my mom was the ski club director for our elementary school and I skied from 3rd grade on. She made me take lessons until 6th grade. Then I was part of her ski club til about 9th grade when I found some friends in highschool who skied and snowboarded. Thats when I started skiing park and my parents supported me all through it. We made 2 separate trips to Oregon to see family and they let my brother and I ski Mt. Hood and the 2nd time we were there, they watched as I was hiking the first jump trying to land my 720 haha. They seemed to like to see me wreck and were saying stuff like all we saw was you rolling down the landing and when are you gonna land it haha. All they ask is for me to wear a helmet. They even let me skip highschool to ski!
So ya, I cant complain about them at all, theyve been awesome! My Christmas present for the past 3 years has been my season pass because thats all Ive wanted!

My parents are in their 50's and 60's, but when they get out they are a damn good time to shred with, and always stoked on comps and shit when I was a kid. Every time my mom watches one of my edits I hear her mumbling under her breath "I deserve this, I deserve this"

my parents are the normal white people... so i tell them i need bigger pants, they fit but they are tight. i say just lemme get some big ass pants and where suspenders. They say i would like a cholo.

my mom and dad are pretty cool with normal park skiing but they can't wrap their heads around my backyard set up and why i ski turf and waste my money on pvc pipes to slide

My parents are fine with it generally, I've only really adopted it in the last season or so but my dads best friends son who is about 26 skis in the same style so it's not new or hard to understand for them. He just gets angry when i ski switch on a narrow run or if there's people around.

You can't blame your parents I guess. Looking through Vids of it, as per parents would see it looks like it's kinda dangerous though. While the way we see it, it's really awesome! We have different points of view though.

When I was younger and living on their dime, they put restrictions on me

Mostly out of concern for my wellbeing

Nowadays they don't say much but I'm not as actively putting myself in harm's way either

When my brother did his first backflip my mom was like "was about time you did it" so she's pretty chyll with it. They also have me a beacon+shovel for christmas when i startet shredding the pow.

My parents support it fully. They're into skiing themselves and me and my brother grew up at a skiresort. I raced until I was 15 and went straight to big mountain after that. Parents gave me my first pow skis and knows exactly why I ski. They encourage it. We usually talk about skiing at home almost everyday, so it's sort of the big thing in our family.

What they don't get is the organization part of it, or rather, the lack of organization. Like the disapproval of the Olympics and stuff like that.

akskier21A few years ago my parents realized they permanently ruined my life after they bought me an issue of Powder back when I was about 8 of 9. That led to ski movies every christmas, as so on. My mom took a job in another town and I started homeschooling in 10th grade so I could work as a ski instructor at Alyeska. Then, because I didn't do anything but party and ski for 2 years I was sent to Windells Academy for my last semester of school so I could at least have a chance of graduating. Basically, skiing ruined my life, my parents aren't always happy with where I go or what I do, but they know I love it, and are all for it.

Also, I don't know them, but OP your parents sound like yuppie assholes who have always lived in the somewhat upper echelons of society and yes, urban is poor mans skiing, but poor men tend to have better character than the rich.


I cannot respect anyone who uses the term yuppie

Well, they weren't really happy at first, they were really worried about my incolumity. But in these two last year I started to reach some targets and they still tell me that I'm going to break my neck going upside down or spinning on rails, but I know they're proud of me. In fact they continuosly asks me my videos to show them to their friends ahah I have to say that I'm really happy they support me

my mom is like waterboys mom!!! skiing is the devils game....lol, she never supported me in competition as a youngen , said i was gonna get hurt. she said skiing wasnt a reality and forced me to go to school and forget about skiing. i always worked hard enough to pay to go skiing and no one could stop me. i saved every dollar for ski trips, a pro ski bum... when i really started to make waves as a skier, getting invited to events... my mom began to sabotage sponsors and friendships... to this day she says im a wanna be and i failed!!!! dont believe me>? lol, this is to crazy to be bullshit

My mom snowboards and sometimes will try to ride park with me so she thinks it's awesome.

My dad supports it more or less but I can tell he's worried about me getting injured and losing my swim scholarship or that I'll quit swimming to ski more. He wants me to focus 100% on swimming and school and put off skiing until I graduate but he's quiet about it and just lets me do my thing.

my parents dont know the difference between a t bar and a chairlift and cant comprehend why i spend so much money is season passes and gear every year but as long as i keep up with school work they let me have days off when its a powder day or when ever i can hitch a ride up the hill

My parents were pretty against it at the first and tried to talk me out of buying my first pair of twin tips but now they seem to be ok with it but get freaked out when i go inverted

My whole family has always been big into skiing. My parents and older brother and sister used to go out to Europe at least once a year to ski with the club we used to be part of. My brother stopped during college and has only gone once or twice a season since then, sister hasnt been out in a while and neither has my mom. My parents aren't together anymore, but both of them still love skiing and my dad skis frequently. Theyve paid for me to go out to Hood for the last three summers and nothing makes them happier than to see videos and pictures of me doing pretty much any trick. My dads wanted to take me out to BC for a while now, i think hes setting up a trip for this winter, we dont talk or see eachother much so its one thing we can really bond over.
