Alright, im in the market for a new knife. Preferably either a switchblade or a butterfly knife. Which do you think i should get. I will be using the knife for protection/collection purposes. Any recommendations?
TRVP_LVRDI want something durable. Butterfly knives aren't illegal in my state, however one of the cons with switchblades is that they are illegal
Durable doesn't go too well defining butterfly or switchblade (auto) knives. Despite this, they still have something that attracts people to them. I will never understand. Function far surpasses form in my opinion.
In my experiences, a quality (keyword here) non-assisted folding knife will require less effort in the long run, less maintenance or adjustments and last much, much longer.
From my experiences (as a former distributor and consumer) and research I've found that Benchmade's Axis and SOG's similar Arc Lock mechanisms are the two best styles of locks out there. Liner locks and lock backs are prone to jamming from pocket lint, dirt, whatever else can work its way into the knife. I also don't have as much confidence in liner locks/lock backs when it comes to staying locked open, or even maintaining their rigidity over time. Granted, rigidity can typically be adjusted on most decent knives, but if it comes loose once, it will most likely happen again.
The Axis/Arc locks do not use a spring for assisted opening, but can be opened with or without the use of the lock mechanism with a flick of the wrist. It takes a tiny bit more effort to open/close using the mechanism; pressing down with your thumb while simultaneously flicking your wrist. But in the long run, you don't have a shitty spring to wear out and the knife will only get more fluid and easier to manipulate with use.
Assisted knives may have that appeal to them, but it will go to shit and make it more difficult to open and close in the long run. They are just not worth the money.
If you are just looking for an EDC (every day carry) knife for general usages and having for self defense if that's your thing; stay away from the butterfly and auto knives.

CRKT makes some good stuff, but I'm not a huge fan of the locks

The 950's reverse tanto blade is my favorite blade shape ever. Gets the tip strength of a tanto, but doesn't lose out on the utility cutting surface for carving or precise cutting like the tantos.
Do you even use your knives or do you just keep them in a drawer and take them out for pictures?

The blue/black Benchmade is my wife's which she has definitely not used to my knowledge. All of the others are in rotation and definitely used. I try to avoid touching the blade as much as possible and wipe down the blade when I'm closing the knife each time. Sharpened by hand when necessary. Overly anal? Maybe, but I take good care of my gear as I expect it to last a long time.

Spyderco Native is a good carry knife that you won't cry over loosing ($60). Nothing fancy, but it cuts and stabs most things you need to. Opens quickly and small enough most LEOs won't give you crap over it (unless you're black, obviously).

Gerber's general issue auto's are hands down the worst knives I've ever played with. I can't believe they would expect our armed forces to carry that garbage.

Oh man! The memories, for a long time the only DVD I ever watched at my uncle's house was a cold steel promotional video of them testing all their products, those were the best! "Now we will stab a stack of leather 500 times, now we will climb a wall using the knives as handles, now we will cut 1000 strands of rope!" man that's just a trip down memory lane...

I have many of these scattered my house. They're so cheap I don't care for losing them or leaving them behind. I have to get them in France, because curiously and ridiculously they're illegal in the UK, apparently locking blades are more dangerous than non-locking. They're not.
switchblades are illegal and butterfly knives are flashy. Get a folder or a small fixed blade (check local laws). I would suggest benchmade or spyderco. I think they are the two best knife makers in the us. some things to consider are type of steel, if you wat spring assist, and type of blade. I am a collector so let me know if you have further questions and I also have some blades for sale if you want info on them.
