Mountain didn't open

So this year was the 50th anniversary of mt Ashland a small mountain in southern oregon. Unfortunately for the first time ever it did not open. Has this ever happened to anyone else and if so did you get to ski at all that year?

not my mountain, but my friend used to ski at ascutney in vermont all the time, which just sold their last lift this summer. the place was kind of a dump but its still pretty sad

last year mountain high got 6 inches of natural snow, they were open from about January to febuary

I dont think he meant it didnt open today, Mt. Ashland didnt open all last season.

We once didn't open because we had to much snow. The road up is extremely sketchy (Usually 1 person dies on it every year, 2 this year) and they couldn't get it plowed soon enough. We've also had years were we dont open until late January but never a season were we didnt open at all

i live in shasta. it didnt open. got to ski a lot though. we def need to ski together some time!

2 decades ago I road Oak Mtn for the first time. My first time skiing at a ski area(not sledding hills backyard etc) The next 3 maybe 4 years it didn't open. Ended up going to gore with the school but only getting to ski 4 or 5 times a year. 2nd or 3rd year it was closed found out about this free ski hill nearby. Super small but went up there a few times a year to be able to get out. Then Oak reopened, got some grants and built a new lift, new lodge and added a legit cat. I was there almost every night skiing. Worked there for 3 years teaching lessons then moved on to gore. I think the second year I worked at gore Oak went bankrupt. Didn't open for another 3 years I think then the town opened it for 2 years. The 3 year it was open it was under the new buyers and current owners.

Def rough when the local hill in your town is closed, especially when the next closest option is expensive. It's $80 now, not sure what it was then.

Another place a n hour plus away Big Tupper went under while I was younger. Never made it there but used to own a hat from there. Never reopened as far as I know.

Hickory an hour away is all natural snow and didn't open for a season or 2.

Shit sucks. Really sad when places go under. A lot of small operations aren't making the crazy money people think they are. A couple bad seasons in a row can put you under real quick.

Those small places are the heart of skiing.

Hoping for a good winter.


The downside of running a seasonal business that's so massively weather dependent. Hopefully your hill can hang on. A lot of bankruptcies the last few years. And for the hills that are down it's great when they can open back up under the same or new owners.

My Ashland didn't open due to the lack of snow. They are selling season passes and plan on opening next year.

I legitimately got a little emotional reading that...If my home mountain didn't open, I don't know what I would do with my life for a year...I would probably fall into some sort of frightening manic depression. Seriously. I'm sorry man, if you ever need a couch to crash on in Sw Colorado or Summit during hard times, mine is open.
