Will watching good skiing make me a better skier

I'm sure many of you also spend a stupid amount of time watching skiers who are way better than you do tricks that you will never be able to do, but will watching these videos actually make you a better skier? Could it help you with visualization, or maybe using it as a tutorial to see how good skiers execute tricks?

for me personally it's more of a motivational, pump up kind of thing, but seeing other people do tricks would probably help your visualization at least a little bit. Imagine trying to throw a trick that you've never seen done before, it would be a shit show.

I notice myself trying to copy the style in edits, try to make it look smooth and all. So I guess it inspires you to try new tricks or how to make'em look better

Sometimes. It definitely helps when you watch a trick you are going to actually try but usually other than that its just for entertainment

With longboarding I like to take edits down to frame by frame and watch their slides. It helps a lot to just break it down and go step by step.

I suppose you could do the same with skiing.

Agreed. Can't count how many times I can figure out a rotation just by watching someone else do it. Also on the style too

It definitely helps! You can see, pretty much everything you need if you find a good angle and can go frame by frame. Than you can go to airbag,water or whatever and just copy the move. It will help you with, at least, understanging the basics of the trick, and then the progress should be way faster.(than trying to learn it from zero) If it´s a rail trick - you can do the same... But just have to go for it straight on snow.

Absolutely not. I can't tell you how many ski videos I own, have watched, have watched drunk before a day of skiing, etc.... When you're actually in the moment, what you watched on a TV will not influence your skiing. Maybe for different people it works, but it just doesn't make sense to me.

Obviously practice will help more.

I learned how to snowboard by playing lots of ssx tricky and skate. I also try to read the pro bios and live as much like them as I can. I have the same shoes as torstein and I feel like that helps me especially when I skate.


Maybe It's all in my head but either way it works for me.

deffinantly, when i was like 13 i broke my knee cap i missed out on that years season, and the season before that i wasnt the best, when i had my broken knee i watched a ton of skiing movies etc, come back the year next and i was like 100000X better, deffinantely helped me

Sitting down and watching someone on a screen? In my experience, that's a no.
but skiing with someone and watching them, and actually being able to (or trying to) mimic their actions, that will make you a better skier.

Not sure it's made me a better skier, but I know that after watching Delorme's edits i went out and buttered and tail pressed the shit out of knuckles and landings, something I wouldn't usually try. So I guess in a way watching edits has helped shape and change my skiing, but not sure it's made me a whole lot better.

OP, yes, it ABSOLUTELY makes you better, assuming you have any skill and knowledge in the sport in the first place to build on

humans learn so much of what we do through watching others. monkey see monkey do, remember? we start learning by imitating literally as soon as we have the capability to do so as babies

any sick pro athlete will tell you they gained from watching the greats before them

when you watch someone do something, the same neural pathways that are associated with that action light up just from watching it. there are a million aspects to this question and some studies have been done on the subject but here are a couple reader friendly articles i found quickly

Dude I skateboard too. And you obviously have no idea what you are talking about. Come talk to me when you can go 40mph down a windy roads and can even make it down alive.

^this is pretty much how I learned to ski. Whenever I ski with someone that I consider a good skier I try to follow and copy them.

I feel like I didn't quite clarify first part that well. You can sit down and watch, it will help you learn and prepare to have the skills, but nothing is gonna be as good as getting out there on snow.

Exactly! I learn so much from better skiers who let me tag along.

Last year was my first year skiing after a couple seasons of snowboarding and a whole summer of watching ski videos. The answer is yes, or at least you will have some more ideas of stuff to try so you don't get hung up learning just one trick. I think watching ski videos and tramping helped me a great deal when it came time to learn how to ski.
