So I just bought some turf and put it outside for a backyard set up, and it slides well and stuff but I tried to hit my PVC rail and my edge just caught and I ate it. I have this years pipe cleaners and they've got really sharp metal edges that don't like the soft PVC plastic so I've been trying to figure out how to build a metal rail. Does anyone have any suggestions? Also on an unrelated note what kind of material do people use as box surfaces.
Huh, I also have this years PCs and I can slide PVC just fine. Look around in a scrapyard for some metal. I'd honestly just change up your stance on rail sliding.
Detune your edges, it helps them slide on everything better (assuming you're going to ride mostly park). Also, the surface of boxes in the park is HDPE, but plexiglass would work for something homemade

I had the same problem. PVC is super soft and it'l get your edges every time. Trust me this takes practice to avoid, but it'l work. Lift you your ski a bit to avoid catching edges.
HDPE is the stuff for boxes, but it is wicked expensive. If you really want a box, use small diameter PVC rails
Also, this might sound funny, but water up your PVC and put it in the sun. Some weathering hardens up the PVC, mine is like wood now
nate4500Metal is for sure the best way to go. I suggest buying one of those skateboard rails. My friend bought a small one (6ft) for like $40.
I did this at first, and now I'm out 40$ And have a 6 foot rail I can do nothing on. Metal is pretty darn expensive, go PVC

I made my own rail this year too. I'll put some pics in for you.
I used steel for everything. It's 8' long and the metal is 2X2". The metal that supports the bar is 1.5X1.5" and I ended up using 12' of it.
I used rustoleum primer on it and then painted over it with rustoleum green paint. I MIG welded my rail but you could also stick weld it if you like. Honestly, this is going to cost you an ass-load if you don't have connections like I did.
rozboonSteel is cheap. It's what, $50 for a piece of new 3"x1"x10' box section.
Find your local metal dealer, ask to look in their offcuts/scraps area, find something useful. I'd be surprised if it cost you more than $20.

My 8' rail that I made costed $30, and that's just because my shop teacher needed to get rid of some metal no one was using. It would've normally costed about $60, and then if you don't have a welder, you'll have to spend another $200 on a welder that's gonna suck dick anyways

So essentially you're agreeing with me, that off-cut steel nobody wants is extremely cheap, and if you find someone with a welder it will cost you a box of beers to get it stuck together?
I got 8ft of brushed stainless handrail for $5 from a fabricator because someone had welded it in the wrong place and it was "cosmetically blemished"
We're not talking back-purged tig here, more like a sum total of 10 minutes welding with a cruddy old mig or even stick.
Add spraypaint and you essentially have what someone posted a few posts ago. Total cost, 1 box beers and maybe $20, $30 of steel.

OK, I can accept that. Don't cheap out on non-waterproof spraypaint and primer though.

That's going to be too short in a season probably
CalebTheKillianwtf is going on
Why so many legs? Just curious
OP
You're best option is just detune your edges as stated. If you want a metal rail your best option is to snag some steel tubing. Either grab some 2 inch steel tubes or even a fatty tube or a 2x4 flat bar whatever. If you build your rail frame well it will be rock solid. You can drill through the metal and bolt it to the frame. If you run a shotgun you can throw an additional bolt between the two rails and it will be super fucking solid. Honestly you could make it ridiculously solid where you would never know (by feel) that it wasn't all steel framed.
That's probably your best bet if you want a cheap metal rail. Other than that the price starts to go up quickly. Not THAT bad, but compared to pvc it gets steep.
CalebTheKillianI pretty much got the metal for free, and I was thinking that it would last longer. There's only 4 stands btw
True. IDk how long it is but probably would have any flex even with one on each end of it. If ya got it for frizzle than whatever though. can always snag t2 of them off for another one if you find more steel.

8' long. I was planning on it being 10' but the 8' stuff was availible so I was like fuck it. Next year I might make a Flat-Down or a C-rail to sell.
You guys dont need to be a pro welder to weld, my welds are terrible but they have been holding up my fat ass for 5 years now. Spent $135. The front is off the ground because its a flat down to match the contour of my back yard.
MIG welding steel is as simple as shit. You can rent a welder from home depot or an equipment place for super cheap. Welds wont look pretty but thats what an angle grinder is for. Go to a constrcution site and get some scrap. Have it built in a couple hours.
