a_shaky_gifhow baggy do you want it? i bought mine in an xxl hoping it would go to my knees. it goes to like my mid thigh and almost touches my knee. im 6'1 and a bean pole lol. if you want baggy go with xl, if you want regular go with large. heres me in my xxl for reference....dont judge lol
tomPietrowskiHow heavy I it? How does it compare to a ogre shell from a big brand? I like the look of it but I'm worried it's not quite tech enough. How is the build in general. If you had to compare it to say arcterxy how does it stack up?
BillnyeOk i think I'll go with the xl thanks !
a_shaky_gifi actually have a thick arteryx coat and a north face shell. theres not insulation in this and it is pretty light. my north face is a pure shell where as my arcteryx is an actual insulated coat. the arcteryx is about 3x as heavy but not nearly as water proof. this would have to be some where inbetween the two coats i mentioned. i havent used it much as i bought it end of this season, but everything is really squared away and seems super durable and heavy duty (especially the zippers). everything is tight and exteremely water proof. and like i said havent had a chance to put it through its paces in cold weather, but it i dont think it will keep me as warm as my insulated arcteryx.
tomPietrowskiSo compared to your north face shell how for it compare? What kind of level shell is it? I obviously am not looking for warmth from a shell I just want to know weather it's worth the money or if I would be better spendin slightly more on a more trusted product.
a_shaky_gifbetween the monarch and the northface its no contest. the monarch has it beat performance wise, but i like the features of the northface better. my favorite is how the northface has a felt/soft piece of cloth on a stretchy piece of fabric ( a goggle wipe) and that has come in handy so many times its not funny. the northface is really light but just doesnt keep me all that dry on those days with wet snow. the saga on the other hand repels water like a rain jacket. so overall i would go witht the saga 3l. note. i did get the north face for like 115$ and the saga was on a closeout sale of 150$
tomPietrowskiSorry so is the north face not a skiing shell? I was hopping someone can compare it to a good quality skiing shell. Can anyone help?
a_shaky_gifok so the one i wear is decently water proof, it just gets soaked after a while. but if the northface was waterproof, and bought a regular size it would be a dang near toss up... but i would have to go with northface tho.
tomPietrowskiAlso for your north face give it a clean an reproof. It sounds like I has just Los the dwr coating so is wetting out. When a fabric wets out it loses all breath ability so if you are noticing your damp when it wets out it probably sweet. If you reprogram it with niK wax or grangers ect you should find the jacket performs really well again.
BillnyeWhat other brands besides saga and armada have cool steezy jackets any underground companies i haven't heard of cause those two are really the only ones i can think of that are not snowboard brands
BillnyeIts not really the tech of it more of the style. I'm really just looking for a steezy jacket. Saga offers that but there so expensive and i cant seem to find any other companies

I_liketobutterWhile I don't own an arcteryx or patagonia shell, but i've tried them on a million times. Also my gf also patagonia goretex pro jacket and pants. I was convinced that was what I was going to buy, but then I was able to get monarch jacket and pants for 50% off, so it was a no brainer. So keep that in mind.
This is last years monarch btw
- Arcteryx and patagonia goretex and goretex pro stuff is much lighter in terms of weight.
- I can't comment on performance, but the monarch stuff is pretty good. It's kept me dry in wet conditions. I can't comment on the breathability of the monarch stuff though I've heard it's not up w/ goretex pro. But then again, goretex pro is on $500+ jackets.
- The build quality is good. I've put about 25-30 days on mine. No issues so far.
- Features are OK. The front pockets lower pockets are way too small for my liking. I like to stuff my mitts or food in there and it's a tight squeeze.
- My biggest gripe is the patterns used to sew it up. The jacket does not articulate well compared to an arcteryx shell. On an arcteryx shell, you can move our arms around and the shoulders pretty much stay in place and don't feel restricted what so ever. On the monarch stuff it feels restrictive at times. It's not horrible by any means, but when compared to, imo, the best shell you can buy, there is a noticeable difference.
Let me know if you have any quesitons
tomPietrowskiAwsome thanks man.
Weight is is a bi issue for me. I'm hoping to tour a lot this season so being able to stash a light jacket is a big plus.
The he novment is interesting. I always hear the arcterxy reps going in about a mivment based fit and I know salomon and I presume a few more do it. I have never really thought about it as with it being easy to move in you never really think about it.
i would still like to try the monarch as I like the look of this years but maybe more as a secondary resort an off hill jacket.
Thanks.
I_liketobutterThe material definitely feels "sturdy". It feels thicker and is stiffer than goretex pro.
