McLeodan elementary understanding of US foreign policy and the broader ME turmoil on display in this thread.... what ISIS is doing is fueled by two primary conditions and both have little to do with American involvement in the region... start by asking what proxy war is taking place in the ME currently.... ISIS suicide bombers blowing up Sunni mosques and killing dozens of Sunni tribesman at a time surely isn't because "we are in their damn country again" ...
JenniferGarnerActually this is happening directly because of USA involvement. Saddam was removed from power because of us and while he was a bastard, he kept that country from falling into civil war between the tribes. Most of the higher grade weapons ISIS now uses are weapons we've flooded the area with... weapons they otherwise would have never gotten their hands on. An elementary understanding of US foreign policy has always shown a complete disregard for not only other countries' sovereignty but also for actual regional stabilization.
.MASSHOLE.Directly? No. How would you blame the US for the Syria-ISIS relationship?
H8CHExtremely worrying that that fucker is British. He would have grown up in Britain to have an accent like that and probably has a British passport! It won't be long until this shit is occurring on British soil (and American too).
.MASSHOLE.Problem is, if we leave, then the atrocities that are occurring in some of those countries go unchecked, thousands of people die, and somehow it is America's fault for not stopping them.
It is a lose/lose situation.
integralmgmtWhat you've said is definitely true: ISIS has very little conventional military power. They could never wage war against a Western power. That being said, they aren't a "traditional" terrorist group, but instead consist of educated individuals from around the world - including countries which are securely Democratic. I wouldn't be surprised if they begin staging international terrorist attacks, which should be a major concern. ISIS is well funded (they don't have advanced weapons not because of a lack of money, but instead because no one will sell weapons to them), and, likely, has willing members in many Western countries.
Despite this, as long as the US increases air strikes and targeted attacks on ISIS leadership, they will become a non-threat. This isn't a conflict where America should be involved on the ground which would place US lives at risk, but ISIS poses no threat to the American air or naval forces, allowing for widespread offensives.
Also, I highly doubt ISIS expected the US to back down after James Foley's death, one piece of American foreign policy that is set in stone is that we don't negotiate with terrorists under any circumstances. Instead it was a successful - albeit reprehensible - ploy for attention.
JenniferGarnerRe-read my post, you simpleton and use some comprehension skills. SADDAM kept his country stable... no one was invading Iraq. The US removed Saddam. Now that we leave everything all fucked up, ISIS comes in and starts a violent take over. Get it?
.MASSHOLE.Pacifistic countries never survive unfortunately.
.MASSHOLE.You simpleton, ISIS went into Syria when the unrest started there, that had NOTHING to do with Iraq. Jesus.
JenniferGarnerAnd what does ISIS and Syria have to do with ISIS literally taking over Iraq? Go drive like a Masshole until you get hit head on by a semi, that'll be more productive than your roundabout jackassery.
DeebieSkeebieskeeping this discussion alive, somewhat.

BombogenesisHoly crap... That's so cool. I think id go gay for any of those guys. Probably some of the most bad ass dudes on the planet. Hugely respectable.
BombogenesisNice that a post praising ours and the UKs special forces gets down voted. You guys fucking blow.

louie.miragsThey're downvoting the user, not the content. Plus, a joke about being gay is so last decade.

BombogenesisI think it's seriously time to do something drastic against these people. Not like 100 spec ops guys or whatever... I'm talking a full scale assault from land, air, and water. Their craziness knows no bounds and anyone who pretends they're not a threat to the security of the entire globe needs to watch this.
Go ahead, if you're against a gigantic military intervention try to stomach 15 seconds of this

las.Did you not learn the last time? Nature abhores a vacuum, which was illustrated perfectly with and after Saddam's removal, beginning the almost complete destruction of Iraqi infrastructure and society. Would you like a repeat or a perpetuation of that? Because it will most certainly happen again (to a differing degree) if the U.S or any major western force enters Iraq with a costly and pointless full-scale assault. By doing so you would also be, as Gnartron said, fueling them further by giving them what they want
BombogenesisSo the best move is to just let them commit a genocide? The nazis would have been stoked to have you in power in 1940
Granite_State*Sigh*
Gnartron is 100% right on this. There is no need for boots on the ground. Stop buying the Fox bullshit that the airstrikes are ineffective.
Also, if we did invade with a ground force, expect to see the same videos produced when they capture U.S. soldiers, shit they would probably do worse...
And you have a problem with this? Maybe, by your rationale, we should invade Mexico with a full army too and try and take out the cartels considering they do the exact same shit ISIS has released video of doing.
ScaredwhiteboyThey have no allies, no military training, and no weapons. They are not a threat at all.
I say let them have their way with Iraq. We've already tried to setup a democracy there once and the Iraqis didn't care enough to defend it. Vietnam and Afghanistan have proved that trying to rid a foreign land of guerilla fighters is an unwinnable war.

theabortionatorYEah because the US is SOOOOOOOO motivated to stop peple killing other people. Truth is unless its our people, people we like, or an area with resources we don't give a fuck.
.frenchyHahahaha what? Oil is a resource that we very much like, there is a ton oil in Iraq dumbass.
>ISIS is based in Syria/Iraq...
