For video shot at 720p the crop is something like 1280 wide and 544 tall for the aspect to be 2.35 to 1. I'd recommend that you just change the sequence settings of the project to have the dimensions of 1280:544 and edit your full 720p video within that timeline. Then you can better frame and position the shots in the crop as if you were to just slap the crop on at the end.
But yeah, just use the 2.35:1 ratio with any width and you'll get a good crop.
On a side note, you have to shoot for the crop. A lot of kids shoot and just use the 16:9 ratio sized screens on their camera, don't frame shots well, etc., so they throw a crop on it and they cut out feet or heads way too much. Also, full glidecam + crop doesn't work out too well. So basically, be wary that you're shooting to crop it.

With magic lantern we have in camera letter boxing so this isn't rly an issue for us. However I get where it coming from as my biggest pet peeve is unnecessary head cut or other improper framing issues.

Srsly tho. If you're going for the 2.35:1 crop on a canon, get magic lantern and it has a live view overlay for it. It shows you the framelines, but the camera continues to record 16:9. Means you can still make up/down corrections, but helps you get the framing right first time.

Yeah I currently have this installed. It's so helpful and to be honest I have such a hard time without ML haha
