Another camera thread.

So I have about $600 to get a camera and I was looking at the Hero 3+ Black edition just because they are practically indestructible, and I can get that with cards/tripod/mounts/etc. for almost exactly $600. What I was wondering is if I should go for this or look at a T3i or GH2 from ebay?

I'm going to be mainly using it while skiing so I figured i can basically bury the GoPro in snow for a month and it'll work fine vs a DSLR where dropping it in ice/snow could kill it from the shock/water and such.

The GoPro is indestructible to an extent, but doesn't shoot as high quality or have as many customization options vs. a DSLR which is very customizable and higher quality, but quite fragile.

What are your thoughts or this? Also just know I don't exactly have money laying around, I sold one of my lenses to pay for one of these cameras.

A lot of vendors on Ebay will allow you to buy a warranty against drops and spills for a rather small premium if you're that worried about it. Just be careful with your camera and it will be fine. I would be a little more generous with your budget and get a GH2 with decent glass. It's a phenomenal camera for how low they're going nowadays.

GoPros are ridiculously easy to use.

DSLRs are not.

Do you want to get into photography as well? Do you see yourself putting a lot of time and effort into making edits?

If you answer yes to either of these questions, I'd say get a DSLR. If making edits is just a little something you do for fun, GoPros are awesome and would be better for you. Filming with DSLRs take a lot of work and you can't just put it in your pocket when you don't feel like filming like you can with a GoPro. That being said, DSLRs are probably more tough than you think.
