The Grateful Dead is one of the most talented bands of all time and without a doubt one of my favorites. They made so much awesome music and Jerry Garcia was a next level guitarist. Preparing for a couple concerts coming up so I have been listening to them the last 4 days. So Dead Heads, what is your favorite Grateful Dead song?

What? No one mentioned Morning Dew! It's too hard to pick a favorite Dead Tune but Morning Dew needs to be mentioned if we are making this thread. Also, Bill Grahams favorite was Sugar Magnolia. Have a very Jerry Day!

few people have said scarlet begonias as their favorite song, i would have to disagree it is their most overrated song. !!!zomgz a 30 minute scarlet fire barton hall holy fuck!!! i dont get the hype, some scarlet jams are good but the space between the last verse and the start of fotm is always way too long and spacy. not a terrible tune but i dont get why people get so hyped on it, especially the 5/8/77 version. best song from that show was row jimmy, the best one they ever played imo. 2nd jam will melt your face off. row jimmy is a super underrated song, also the first dead tune i ever heard and got me to start listening

Morning Dew is a really good one but I am really surprised that nobody has said Sugar Magnolia OR Fire on the mountain

He asked for similar bands. Papadosio and dopapod are both good, but they're electronic jam bamds. Totally different genre. Same reason I didn't suggest Lotus.

Yeah, but people who dig similar bands usually dig the electronic jam bands. For me it was progression from listening to dispatch and modest mouse and other more popular bands, I found moe., then I found jam bands like Dopapod. Smooth transitioning

For sure, I was just trying to keep it to similar genres based off what he asked. Like you said, it's a natural progression.

Fuck yeah man! Phish is by far my favorite band. Let me know if you want some direction/what to download/etc. There's so much there and it can even be overwhelming. I have around 20GB of phish on my iPod and I still feel as if I'm missing a lot of classic shows. I'm not about to write a book about why I love phish in the Dead Head Thread, so I'll save you that.

Before diving into Phish albums, You gotta note that their albums are shit compared to seeing them live.

Billy Breaths, Hoist, Lawnboy, Joy and their new album Fuego are good places to start.

No, some bands have great albums and suck like (I personally don't like seeing Papadosio live), others make good albums and also play well live (like moe. and Umphreys McGee). Others, like Phish, have mediocre albums that are still fun to listen to but do no justice to the band's talent.

I don't know where to start... It is easy to find soundboard quality audio for many shows. Wide reference the golden years were '92-'99. Ultimate run was Fall '97.

For albums, I'd start with:
Trey's senior project The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday
Every studio release from Junta->Story of the Ghost

Show suggestions (If you take anything from this post, these shows are MUST HAVES and monumental shows in Phishtory.

I'd suggest just listening to shows start to finish, but If you're looking for the GOODS, look up the shows on phish.net for recommended and key song versions. It's an incredible resource full of statistics, history, and passionate phans who know EVERYTHING about the band. Check it out!

I just wanted to bump this thread saying I do like Papadosio live, I was confusing them with Octopus Nebula (who just sounds like a STS9 cover band live).

Jimkata and Piegeons Playing Ping Pong

Both awesome.. shuffle on spotify and i am digging it! I get to see Pigeons Playing Ping Pong tonight at Catskill Chill! Along with Dopapod, Papadosio, lettuce and so many more

checkout twiddle, if you are digging the dead and phish i can almost guarantee you will love these guys...they are imo the next big jam band. they are blowing up like crazy and if you have the chance go see them now while they still are playing smaller venues.

yeah they are doing 3 sets this weekend at Catskill Chill.. one of them being a dead set! I am going to check them out. They were at moe.down last weekend and had 3 sets as well, I didn't check em out though. I will this time around.

Just gunna throw this out there. Lesh's son is really good. His band is Midnight North and plays at his fathers venue for free like 2-3 times a week. It's especially good when he plays with the Terrapin Family band and he plays with Jason Crosby, Ross James and Bobby Lebowitz (AKA LeBo).
