Best daily driver for an aggressive skier...

Bros,


Its time for me to make the jump out of the park rat phase and do some real skiing on real mountains with real snow. I've been a park rat for most of my skiing life and have only skied park skis. I ski varied PNW conditions and am an aggressive skier. I'm also big (6'5'', 210) and I'm looking for a bomber ski that can rip pow, jibs, the occasional park lap, groomers and steep and will hold its own in most conditions. This wouldn't be my only ski but it should be something I can use about 80% of the time. Because of my size length is a big consideration and it limits my choices (gotta be above 190).


I've done research and the skis i'm currently considering are:

JJ's and AK JJs
on3p kartel 106
on3p Jeffery 112
Bent Chetlers
Line SFB's

I know thats a little all over the place but I don't have a bunch of experience with 'pow' skis so all input is appreciated. Thanks

At your size I'd skip the JJ's. They ski short and at 185 they just won't be big enough for you. Those things will fold up on you in any sort of chop also.

Same goes for the AKJJ's unless you're skiing blower power all day. I ordered a pair and sent them back the same day since they hand flexed way too soft despite Armada claiming they stiffened them up.

If you're trying to do all mountain, stick with something in the 100-110 range.

190 SFB or 192 Opus could be up your alley. I'd definitely be looking at 190 cm+ skis at your size, which unfortunately limits your choices a bit. I'm 6'2" and I wouldn't buy under 185 cm pow/all mountain skis.

I would say go with the katels 106 or moment pb&js, which come in a 186 and 188, respectively. It's tough to find all-mountain skis over 190

How much do you like skiing trees and bumps versus open spaces and big lines and pow? If you like a lot of tight tree skiing something with a relatively short turn radius would be good, if you like big open pow fields and the like then a longer turn radius would be better. Also consider Pettitors and Shiros. Pettitors only go up to 189 but that's like ~195 from other companies because K2 measures differently, and Shiros come in 193 and 203. I haven't personally ridden them but Ian Macintosh rides them, that wouldn't be true if they didn't own.

No way with the sfb and your weight. Go to any shop and handle a pair, they're just too soft, thin and flimsy. I always loved the shape and graphics but way too soft for a truly hard charging skier. I ride the salomon rocker 2 122. It has enough camber and sidecut to set a solid edge on icy east coast hardpack, it rips in the moguls and tight trees as it pivots on a fuckin dime. Mid stiff flex. They aren't super stiff at all but have enough dampness to not chatter around on hardpack at high speeds. The have excellent pop, and the wide platform is baller for cliff drop landings. They have honeycomb tech in the tips and tails so swingweight is not bad for such a fatty ski. The sides of the nose are rounded for butters also, just an EXTREMELY teched out, well thought out ski. I am 6'2" 185 lbs.

Check out the 191 Armada Syndicate from levelnine. It's basically an early rise Armada ANT that was never released.

Amd they're cheap.

I second this referral . Petitors or shiros are 2 great options gor you in my opinion .

I appreciate the input from everyone, anyone have knowledge on the bentchetlers vs pettitors? I've heard that the benchetlers and just a more tuned in version of the pettitor, and also not made in china (i believe) for what thats worth.


Also How different is the JJ from the magic J?

Also as much as these are going to be my 'all mountain' skis i don't mind skiing a fatter ski, just because i know that with my size weight and skiing style I'm pretty confident in being able to force a fatter ski to turn/do what i want even on hardback.

I ride the 192 bentchetlers as my everyday ski. I love them, and you would not be disappointed.

I have a guy at my home mountain that rides pettitors, and he seems to get a ton of tip flap. The bentchetlers will turn a little quicker, and be a little lighter, but I will be honest, my bases didn't hold up to well.

They are pretty similar skis and you will be happy with either.

Likewise. But OP has 25 lbs on me. No way would I want to go any shorter than the 192, so they probably won't be enough ski for him.

From my understanding, at least with the 2013/2014 chet model, the chet is a more similar stiffness throughout and it a little "sufier" in fresh snow whereas the pettitor is stiffer underfoot and a little softer in the tips and tails. But they're very similar and you can't go wrong with either.

As said above, don't get jjs. They're too small and you'll absolutely overpower them.

I agree that would make a great pow ski for him but it sounds like op is looking for more of an all mountain ski that could handle groomers and "the occasional park lap", so it might not be the best option for him

The shiros have a very long and gradual rocker with flat underfoot that should handle groomers and hard pack pretty well as well as being good in pow. I can post pics of the rocker profile of a 183 shiro if you want. Also they're really stiff.

get the bent chetlers! you sound like a burly dude and these skis are burly. they are fuckin perfect for just about any sort of off-piste skiing, whether you're looking for charging capability, how they float, being able to hold a good solid edge on hard pack, their flex is perfect (tail flex is stiff but not too stiff, its forgiving, prime for fatty airs off cliffs or kickers into pow fields) and the new tech they put into the tips and tails will make for wayyy less flap in any crud, really good turn radius also. i couldnt give enough credit for these skis man like trust me when i say i'm 6'4 and these are the best skis i have ever had. and btw i do take them in the park every once and while (my babies don't touch rails though) and they have such nice pop and swing weight that i can throw just about anything i want off of whatever i want.

BUT, if you don't want these then i'd say get the magic j's. also great skis for similar reasons.

The Pettitors and Bent Chetlers are pretty similar. I believe the Bent Chetlers have a bit more rocker, and the 2015 Bent Chetlers also have spoon rocker (aka deep dish rocker, aka whatever anyone else wants to call it -- point is, rocker is not only tip to tail, but also side to side). That means that the Bent Chetlers are probably going to be a bit more playful and floaty in pow but a bit less stable on groomers. That said, I have not ridden the Pettitors and only rode the Bent Chetlers briefly, so maybe someone who has more experience with both can give a better input.

I will say that my K2 Obsethed are my favorite skis I've ever ridden, are my daily drivers, and can handle literally anything except really icy groomers perfectly. The Pettitors are pretty much the replacement for the Obsethed in K2's lineup. I personally like my Obsethed more than the Bent Chetlers, but it's not necessarily a valid opinion considering I have hardly ridden the Bent Chetlers. Might change after I got used to them.

You can't go wrong with Bent Chetlers, Pettitors, or Shiros, all are excellent skis. JJs might be better if you want to do a lot of tight tree skiing, but from my limited time on the Bent Chetlers I found that they really like quick short radius turns so they might do well in trees too.

as much as i would love to recommend the petitors i think they will be way to soft. I Have ridden a pair of chets are they ahve a very nice stiffness, and for a bigger guy they would be great.

What was the last pair of skis you were riding, and where were they mounted? and what flex boots are you riding your set ups with? Do you want to change your style? Or stay the same? Price range? Questions that would help to determine what ski is your preference not some other persons personal preferences. The only answer your going to get is durability and price point from the rest.

Are you dropping 40's?

I ski the Jeffrey everyday up here in the pnw. Its the older 12-13 so its 110 under foot and I absolutely love it. It'll handle our cascade concrete and park laps with ease. It also does really well in trees and big open areas like out in southback at Crystal. I'm an aggressive skier as well. Being a bigger guy (6'0" 225) I can really throw them around. I think the 112 Jefferies would do what you need them to do everyday. Call those guys down at On3P I'm sure they'd be happy to let you demo during the season. Just my two cents

As said before absolutely no way on the sfb if you are a true hard charging skier with some weight. Way too soft, as for the pettitors, I would assume like all k2 skis, too much flex for hard charging, floppy tips, I see you in a rocker 2 122 or a bentchetler, an all mountain powerhouse that is playful enough for freeride tricks, switch, airs etc, but damp enough to hold up at speeds with your weight. Go handle whatever you plan to buy before you buy it. Blindly buying online can be a major letdown.
