What up Albany?

PowBombI'm an East Coast virgin... Just moved to Albany this summer for work after graduating from college.


Last season I spent my days slaying Mount Bohemia's 350" of snow (upper peninsula of Michigan). I'm sad to leave that paradise that virtually no one knows about... and I'm looking for something to get stoked on for this winter. Just bought a pass to Gore Mountain because it seems like it has good potential for some sick days in the trees.

I figured I would run to Mount Snow for a park fix here and there. And to be honest, I can have just as much fun hauling ass and doubling up bumps through the trees as I can in the park.

Anyone go to Gore regulary? Or do most go to Mount Snow?

Can anyone show me an excuse to get a skinning set up? I'm thinking there has to be potential in the Adirondacks, but then again, I know absolutely no one here and haven't gotten a decent grasp on what the winters are like. I'm hoping to find some snow belts where it's not all ice.

They don't call it the ice coast for nothing.

I go to hunter regularly, but that's because I live 20 minutes away.

I haven't been to gore or mt snow, sorry i cant help you there.

as for snow belts, those only happen in central and western ny, don't really ever make it past tug hill.

Southern adks get great snow. Once you get to queensbury or below you get the mix a lot more. The trees at mt jore are fucking sick. pretty nice overall layout as well. If it's packed you can stay up top and rock out the straightbrook quad all day with no lines really. The park kind of blows but they do have a decent amount of rails and jumps. Some of them are shit and some will be set up super sketchy but you can find a few worth hitting. Also the pass is cheap as fuck till you're 23.

As also mentioned the new mt snow deal is fucking great. I used to drive 3.5 hours on my days off to ride there 08-10 and then dabble a few times a season after that.

If you don't need a huge mtn come up to Oak sometime. About the same distance as jore. You'll take a different route but only 35 min apart if you go from 1 to the other. Probably won't have as many jumps as gore but hopefully I can build a few proper ones if there's snow. Will have gore smoked in rail setups though. Also has some decent trees that don't get beat out. Doesn't have as steep or long of trails but it's not too shabby. And I'll be there most days working and causing trouble. Tickets are $35 full day or if you want to pick a day early as cheap as $17 with free craft beer. (great beer selection)

West AKA Waste, is cool for night skiing once in a while. It's 17 on tuesdays I think. I worked there for 3 years, haven't ridden there much outside that but it's a fun little hill. Park got almost decent but then abandoned, they still have some stuff though. Some mtn bike trails but no real tree skiing. Also can get icy as fuck but you should check it out at least once.

If you like music check out SPAC in saratoga. That place is pretty rad. The palace in albany is also pretty rad but less raging.

I knew gore's park wasn't that great, but if there's tree's to be bombing through, i won't care. I'll have to check out oak for sure. A good beer selection and a good rail setup.. shit... count me in.

I haven't been to SPAC yet - haven't seen anyone that I wanted to go there for. I've been to saratoga a few times though. The nightlife during the race season is unreal.

Oh yeah... and albany is one weeiiiirrrrd ass city. Pretty happy to be living in Troy.

Anyone ever ski jiminy peak? its 30 mins from where I work. if it's decent I might be doin some night skiing there

Magic Mtn is an awesome mountain that's around 1.5-2 hrs from here. Plattekill is another great mountain about the same distance but just south of here in the Catskills.

Jiminy is fun because it's so close but doesnt really offer that much. Great to do some cheap night skiing though and you cant beat the 30-40 min drive from here.

i'll be heading up to albany in 2 weeks for Lark Fest... haven't been before but I have a friend with an apartment up there so i'm gonna go up and get fucksed up

If you're in troy you're in a great spot for getting to mount snow. Only an hour and a half if even from there. Troy used to have my favorite music venue revolution hall but northern lights, a giant shithole ran it out of business. A lot of good shows come through northern lights or "upstate concert hall" I think they call it now. That said you can change the name but the place is still a shit hole. That's in clifton park, so a short drive up the northway from you, on your way back from gore.

You'll see west when you're driving back from gore at night, exit 18.

Hickory is a cool little hill in warrensburg,exit 23 where you get off for gore. But they've been having a rough time as they don't make snow and the last few winters they haven't really opened much.

Albany seems like it's dying honestly. Pearl street isnt really happening anymore. Used to go to small shows down there all the time. Jillians closed last year or two years ago. A spot nearby called the bayour or something is alright and has some decent stuff. I think red square closed but if that's still open that place was pretty decent. Also the palace theater right odd 87 on clinton. Don't park off of clinton unless you wanna get shot robbed or both but that's one of the best old theaters out there. Don't make em like they used to. Also albany has a pretty good free summer concert series. Thursdays I think in the park down by the harbor. Also some free music at the empire state plaza regularly. Don't hang out in washington park at night if you're down there.

There are some good urban rails around troy as well. Also some in Albany. There's a nice high down rail in mayfield( a little bit of a drive, and a nice single dfd in johnstown hit both of those in one shot as they're close. Both of those are school rails but they aren't in the hood so that's refreshing if you're hitting troy albany shit. There's a cool down rail to c with a bank, maybe like 60' if you did the whole thing in canjo, between fonda and utica on the thruway. You just drive through town and when you go up the hill you'll see it on your left. Never hit it but always looked at it when driving to my buddies house.

Thanks for all the good info man! Yeah, Albany has some weird vibes, but I feel like Troy is on the up swing. Granted, I've only been here for a few months, but downtown Troy has been good to me.

I have a very important question... Where can I find a good bootfitter in this general area? I'd be willing to travel a decent amount if it's worth it.

I've used Steiner's in the past and have had no problems. They have a store in the Price Chopper Plaza in Glenmont.

Me and Dan aka palecelery almost got stabbed around ontario NYE 2009. I say almost got stabbed because the guys we encountered who ended up pounding on a door of a house trying to get us to come out after we ran stabbed a guy around the corner later on.

Not all bad though. Was tripping and it was snowing.Stayed at theclap's.


For albany area info theclap could probably drop some info. Lived on madison for a few years.

I've never really run into trouble in albany or troy, seen some things but never had anything TOO ridiculous happen.

Gore is a fun time I really enjoy their glades, I get a pass to snow/Stratton so ill be shredding there a lot. If you take a drive up to northern Vermont/New Hampshire you can find some solid areas for BC. Theres always tucks in the spring too, ive never been personally but id be down to organize a ns trip this year.

ADK touring is alright.

I've been doing a lot of research since I posted this thread... I've been seeing some stuff that has really turned my head. And yeah man, touring in this area & in VT looks like it could be down right ridiculous. I'll be scrounging money around to get a proper AT setup at some point. I was damn close to dropping $$ on some killer alpine boots that feel SO damn good (and still might), but I might have to ride out my torn apart FTs to put money towards an AT setup... Decisions, decisions. Ever been to the Mountaineer in Keene Valley? Where does one get fitted for a touring boot around here... that a good place?

The Mountaineer is awesome. Drew Haas, the guy who runs adkbcski.com and wrote the Slide guide works there and is definitely one of the people to talk to.

If you're looking a bit closer to home, there's a pretty good place in Clifton Park. Can't think of the name at the moment, though.

Problem with touring is you have to have a partner and the education, too. Finding someone else to invest with you can be difficult.

I'm from the north country and now I am a freshman at college in Albany. I skied titus with occasional trips to whiteface until the pass to whiteface ended up being cheaper last year, so I skied there a lot.

Whiteface is a great mountain with good jumps, but the drive is pretty far from Albany.

As said before, gore has great trees when there is snow, but the park kind of blows.

Haven't skied southern Vermont yet, but I want to try it this year.
