From what ive read, the driver had crashed and was walking across the track to presumably bitch out the driver who caused the crash. Another driver wswerved to avoid him, obscuring Tonys view, and then Tony hit him. Not on purpose

that was definitely on purpose, not saying he wanted to kill him but he was clearly trying to scare him, his team must be using the same PR guys the NFL used with the Ray Rice issue, even if it was an accident, which it wasnt, theres no way he should be out there today
So here's the deal. Tony Stewart was in the 14 car, and Ward was in the 13 card. Tony accidentally clipped Ward on a turn and Ward took exception to that. Ward started flashing hand signals at Tony while walking towards the center of the race track dodging cars.. When Stewart passed Ward again it looked like he may have tried to swerve at the last second to avoid him but who knows, but anyways, Ward was wrapped around the tire a couple times and then thrown lifeless across the track.
Nothing has been determined yet as to whether it was intentional or not but speculations are leaning that way because the caution was out this whole time and Tony was going pretty damn fast coming around that turn.
Watch at your own caution, you are literally watching a man die.
i still say its a dumb move to go out on the track like that. wait until you're off track. imo you'll never be able to tell if intentional or not from that video itself

yea but that was tony's second time around the track, going too fast for a caution, engine revs, car swerves, guy dies. from what Im reading most eye witnesses believed it was on purpose. hopefully more videos come out.
I don't know what to think. Tony Stewart definitely has a certain reputation, but there's a few things that tell me it could've been an accident.
one, the guy is wearing black, at night on a race track. He hops out of his car basically immediately, and looks furious and is stalking down the track. He does some little swerve dance and almost gets hit by one car (that apparently was directly in front of Stewart), that car swerves out of the way, and then it looks to me like Stewart picks him up visually, and swerves left, possibly gasses, and the guy is caught. It had a little of the look of those classic "car in front sees an obstacle late, swerves out of the way and leaves the car trailing close little to no time to react" accidents. But again, with the view we have, you can't really see how it all develops.
I think it is entirely possible that it was an accident, but I really don't know what to think. It's hard for me to think that a guy whose race wasn't ended, who was in good shape to make the chase (whatever the fuck that is, I'm not a race fan), would've been so angry at a 20 year old kid that he decided to hit him with his machine. He's done some out there shit, and he's pretty polarizing, but I don't know.
Either way, it is pretty fucked up, terrible outcome. What was that kid thinking though? Several cars went flying by him before it happened, why he didn't go back to his car or just sit tight and wait for the all clear is beyond me. That part's on him. If Stewart did do it on purpose, that's about as disgusting an act as humanly possible in the context of a FUCKING SPORT/HOBBY. Lock his ass up if that's the case.
Man, rewatched the video and it looks like he swerves right......but it's hard to tell if that's from impacting with Ward and him getting hung up on the car and it drags that way because his body is braking the right side, or if he....swerved at him. The video doesn't look good, that's for sure.
Still hard to believe a Nascar champion with millions would in a second decide to throw everything away because some kid pointed his finger at him.

Isn't Tony Stewart notorious for being a hot-head? I don't follow Nascar but I've heard stories. I think he could have avoided the other driver but like mentioned a few times above, that moron should have never gotten out of his car and ran into the middle of the track.
The guy should have never gotten out of his car with cars still going. Really a sucky situation that started with his stupidity. Having raced for a lot of years one of the main rules of racing is don't get out of your vehicle until instructed to do so unless there is a life threatening danger such as a fire. I feel bad for the family of the guy who got hit but more for Tony given the fact that he will take some heat for this whether it was his fault or not.
Ward was an idiot of course but when you click through the video slowly you can almost make out the front tires of Stewart's car turning towards the right, towards Ward and then back to the left like Stewart did try and hit him or at least scare him; which is completely fucked. I always kinda liked him as a driver/competitor but that is disgusting if what I was able to make out is the case.
And of course leave it to twitter to trend about this whole thing and have it turn into people bringing up nothing but pages of racism cries from left field about people only caring when white people die.
I see a foolish young buck who thinks he has something to prove walking out into the middle of a racetrack in an all black jumpsuit. I don't know what Stewart was thinking, but if the other guy would have kept his cool this would have been avoided.
I haven't read any comments in the thread yet, but i'm a big NASCAR fan and I saw what happened. This is in no way Tony Stewarts fault. The kid got out of his sprint car in the middle of a race.... They have to make a rule soon if you get out of your car in the middle of a race, you're going to get heavily punished.
This sucks for Tony Stewart, my thoughts and prayers go out to the Ward family.

I don't believe that Tony did this intentionally at all. It's pretty obvious that the car in front of him swerved at the last second to avoid Ward leaving Tony without any time or knowledge of Ward to get out of the way.
The last thing a race car driver is looking for is a person on the track.

Obviously Tony didnt mean to hit him, thats obvious, as long a he's been racing he's been through literally hundreds of disputes like this. Some 20 year old kid isnt gonna get to him.
What im not sure of is if he tried to "juke" towards him, kind of as a "fuck off". Which isnt all that uncommon in racing. or if he just plain didnt see him. the guy ahead of him swerves to avoid the kid, so i could definitely see Tony not even seeing him, visibility out of a sprint car is pretty shitty, plus the fact that its on dirt means he could have had a dirty visor, your not paying all that much attention behind the pace car as you take it as a break.
and you also have to consider that these things have 900HP, their set up to just turn left as well as possible, so when you even just tap the throttle on one of those, on dirt, they'll squirm around pretty easily, plus it takes pretty much zero time to go from like 20 mph to 100. he wasnt cruising around a well lit street in a mini van.

Tony pushed him off line the lap before, something that is common in sprint car racing. The kid got hot-headed and instead of staying in his car as he well knew growing up racing and was told to do so in his earpiece by the track officials (if they didn't, the officials can expect legal action).
The right-side of the cars are completely blind to the drivers due to, in simplistic terms, how the car is setup. Hold your right arm out ahead of you, then hold it to the 2 o'clock position, that's their field of vision. Since the very tame crash happened the lap before, of which Tony was ahead of him and could have very easily not have known he pushed him off line and into the wall. Again, contact like this is very common and doesn't always result in people going into the wall. This happened the next lap, he did not lap around to see him in the track.

When he saw him, that's when he accelerated. When sprint cars accelerate, they go LEFT, not right. After you're done accelerating, they can veer right but that's not what happened here. Sprint cars have been taking heat for the safety even though they're ahead of the curve relatively speaking. The media wants ratings so of course they'll take advantage of the ignorance and make up a story. The sheriff and top officials know he did not intend to do this and no, he decided not to race today.
Long story short: If you think he had any intention to scare or hit this kid, you're a moron with zero knowledge about sprint cars and you should shut the fuck up. It's an unfortunate situation and hopefully changes are made to ensure dumb asses don't get out of their vehicles because they want to make a show of how angry they are. And with all that said, I don't give a shit about Stewart outside of his love and devotion to dirt sprint. He was/is an amazing ambassador to this sport that's suffering greatly with tracks disappearing by the year and has donated much time and money to keep it going. He's going to take a severe hit to his career due to sponsors leaving from the heat produced by the ignorant, public lashings by the media. Also he will never be the same with that weight on his shoulders and it sucks because the only reason this has caught so much attention is because of his notoriety.
i was at the glen today for the sprint cup race and there wasn't much talk about it. a word at the start, but i don't think they wanted to detract from the event today. tony was out, and i guess that shit's all being dealt with now.
i hope something is done about people running onto the raceway though, cause that shit happens a lot. people get butthurt and race out to flip someone off and eventually this kind of thing is going to happen. gotta ban people from exiting their vehicles on the course while the race is still underway or some shit...

"Hey-dude" clearly has no idea, and ONCE AGAIN, is just talking out his ass about something he knows nothing about. Dirt track are NOTHING like paved tracks. These cars don't even have transmissions. Either you're in gear, or you're not. You can't just dump the clutch if something happens. With these cars, if you accelerate, you go left, or towards the bottom of the track. If you hit the brakes, you shoot towards the top of the track. To try and maneuver these cars, you HAVE to be on the gas. And, if you have ANY clue, you realize these cars spend the entire race without full traction, basically drifting around the track.And if you're watching, the drivers are constantly over and under steering just to keep the cars straight. This was 100% the kids fault.
Not a NASCAR fan or racing fan for that matter, but I'm aware of Stewart's reputation. That being said, assuming that Tony Stewart would purposefully kill a man because he has a reputation as an asshole is a pretty gigantic jump.

This also applies for those of you saying he was trying to scare him. Stewart fully understands how a move like that could end up tragically. Just because Stewart is an asshole, doesn't mean he would intentionally put someone in danger.
