Newcomers to Freeskiing

So I've been noticing a ton lately that there is a whole new wave of people entering the sport. New members popping by that have only been into this for 2-5 years, stories of shops like D-Structure having kids aged 9-13 walking in the front door completely fresh and uneducated about anything Freeskiing... but thinking it looks dope.

What I'm rapidly cluing into is the fact that they have seen a completely different sport than any of us who have been in it from the late '90s until now. Even if you joined the revolution in 2004 - you'd know a drastically different sport than joining the cause in 2009-2013.

Questions like the Relevancy of Tanner Hall, Who the fuck is this Candide guy, is Tom Wallish even that good.... seem like insanity if you've been there for a few years but there's actually logic if you never got the history.

With an ever increasing speed of progression, we are apt to immediately discard the past and only focus on the here and now. New person walking into the sport might only ever view T-Hall as that dude that has been injured their entire time in the sport and having some vague idea of the fact that he used to win X-games back in the day when the tricks weren't as hard.

I almost blame myself for not putting more historical education out into the world. I definitely think all of us need to do our part to point out things from history to check out. Rad old movies, good edits, etc.

What I don't want is for people to come into the sport and view it just like classic freestyle. Like "Oh great, I can join a competitive freestyle team, try to win every day and go to the Olympics." I think to not get into the traps of the past we must make sure that the lifestyle of it all, the fun, the character is something we make sure the new blood realizes is out there.

TL;DR - There's new people coming into the sport and they don't have easy access to the history.

Brobomb's archive section, if it had a little more structure, could be a great resource. Why not go along those lines? I don't know if this is just a PSA or a call to arms, but imploring people to play their part when you wield the greatest resource to do so seems kind of silly.

Yeah sorry, its not lost on me that we need to do a better job at it. I am definitely committed to that, and we will be putting resources towards doing a better job. You have my word.

I also just wanted to make sure that everyone else was on the same page. Many people that happen by Newschoolers might get their information just asking questions in the forums. In that scenario, I can only be on top of so much and its up to you guys to help educate a newcomer.

The fist ski mag I ever read was the Powder with the tribute to McConkey. I remember the first Freeskier I ever read Tanner got skier of the year and I think he had just had his second injury. Basically Tanner and Shane shaped all of my ideas and goals with skiing initially.I came into Freeskiing very late but I have always been really into reading so when I found Brobomb I remember reading all the archives, I also remember finding NS long before I ever joined. I remember reading the Chad's Gap thread a few years before I joined and having no idea what was going on.

I guess as skiers join the sport it is easy to forget where we came from but I think the stories of our history are super awesome and worth telling. I love watching all the older MSP movies on Hulu, i realize that they aren't that old or that historical but the people in them that have either passed or moved away from skiing are worth knowing about. All the new kids should know who Shane, CRJ, and Sarah were. Everyone should have a brief history of Tanner and Dumont's pipe battles. Guys like Mike Wilson who did some crazy stuff and then kind of moved away from the sport for a while are way too rad to just forget. Candide still blows my mind and he has years and years of history that I think kids should still care about.

The globalization and introduction of a lot of free content means that now not everyone reads the sane mags and watches the same movies. We don't all have the same heroes anymore which is fine but we can't forget where we came from.

My worry is losing that. Hell I remember growing up thinking that the only thing to do in skiing was race. We had no freestyle club, you weren't allowed to jump - hell the mountain even plowed down all moguls.

I actually was just about to quit skiing when I saw my first Freeze magazine.

I just started skiing for the first time ever this past season. I liked it enough that I moved from FL to the pacific northwest so I'll actually be able to do it for more than 2 weeks a year.

This upcoming season will be my first in the park, and I'm 27 so I know that at this point I'm not going to be Tom Wallisch but I'm looking forward to having some fun

Make a timeline with important events, edits, etc. I saw an article the other day, it may have been on here, with all the X-Games Big Air winning tricks. I only joined the site the end of the -2012 season, so it was pretty awesome seeing how everything evolved.

because if you don't give a shit, and dont do something to make sure its preserved in the way you love it then it will be destroyed by people trying to make money. look at other "disciplines" of freestyle, look at the fucking earth we live on.

i wouldn't call 2-5 years newcomers. i've been freeskiing since 2010 and my entire life is occupied by it; doing it and thinking about it. it's technically impossible for a lot of us to get in to freeskiing earlier and freeskiers are typically seen as teenagers anyway. anyway if you love skiing as much as i do you can tell that someone like tanner hall is a legend even if i wasn't around when he was in his competitive prime. his sw 5 is crissssp

Rage Film's Booter Crunk got me intially really stoked on freeskiing. Plus Tim Durtschi lived in Bend and he was the hometown hero for skiing. That was what, 2006?

I'd say if people want to know more about skiing's history, they should just watch these movies:

1. "Steep" - the story of how skiing on mountains started and progressed. this one's full of awesome old footage and stories.

3. "Like A Lion" - This one takes you through the history of Tanner Hall right from the beginning and really gives you a good perspective on why he's so legendary, even if you don't know anything about him or skiing.

I only got into freeskiing in 2012, before that I ski'd every so often on my local dry slope until one week in France I came across a guy on park ski's.
After that trip I went home and spent the rest of the year reading up on and obsessing over freeskiing, the first edit I ever watched was CR's every day is a saturday segement. From there I was hooked and have been progressing on my skiing and my knowledge of the freeskiing world. I'd like to think I have learnt quite alot and base the majority of my inspiration on guys like Tanner, CR, Shane and Candide, but at the same time loving what Henrik Harlaut is doing on the scene. Every aspect has it's attractions.

At 21 I know I'll never be stomping big tricks in the park but I have a dream of the back country and big mountain, if it wasn't for those guys I wouldn't have that. Definitely something to help the kids find their way in freeskiing.

When Shane died it was the literally the saddest day of my skiing life. When CR and Sarah both passed I was equally sad, but I looked up to Shane as the person I wanted to be when I got older.

I'll admit I did get into the sport quite late, however, I feel like I know an okay amount of background info on the history of park skiing/skiers. Not a whole lot on BC guys, which is quite a shame. I guess I am one of those kids who hopped into the skiing world pretty late with very little knowledge on anything, but I sure as hell know I go out there every day to ski purely for fun and for enjoying myself out in the mountains with my closest friends. That's what it is and will always be about for me. As soon as I start taking skiing seriously and am no longer doing to laugh and have fun, I'll quit.

I grew up on the prairies of Saskatchewan. My family was always into skiing and would usually make a trip out west once a year. My first trip to the mountains happened when I was about 3 (grandpa tied a rope around me). I always like jumping and would straight air off the jumps in the snowboard park (no skiers allowed) on my hand-me-down 185 Blizzard's from the 80's. Eventually (after about a season or so of trying), I managed to get a 360. I didn't get my first pair of twins until 2004 (og red K2 Fujatives).

Every once and a while we would rent an old Warren Miller movie and watched new ski movie trailers that took 15 minutes to load on dial up. The first 'legit' ski movie I bought was MSP's Ski Movie. We didn't have any ski shops in town so we didn't have any of the latest movies. I was in a HMV or CD Plus and it was sitting in a bargain bin like a year after it was released. Skogen Sprang and Evan Raps split part is still one of my favourite segments of all time. Same thing happened a few years later when I picked up High Society. MSP will always have a special place in my heart.

I love that I've been able to witness Seth Morrison hitting rails, Tanner as a kid, Pollard skiing park, JP's unchanging (yet amazing) style, TJ and Simon before they became primarily contest skiers, Level 1 grow from infancy, Sarah's fight for female legitimacy in the park/pipe, having only a few twin tip skis to choose from (1080, Rossi Pow-Air, K2 Enemy, Dynastar Concept and maybe something from Line), etc. The list can go on and on and on.

Skiing is not my biggest passion anymore and I'm lucky if I get over 10 days a year, but I still love it and will never stop.

A history of the sport portion of NS would be amazing.

I say a piece of the 2014 NS Yearbook should be dedicated to the history of freeskiing, focusing on heavy hitting events that came together and formed what we now know as the sport.

Honestly I disagree with your mentality. It sounds like you are afraid of evoloution (or change). Skiing is mine and nobody can take it, regardless of how much money they have. It will snow again.

I was first exposed to free skiing through skier magazine, and I always thought that Shane Szocs and Mike Douglas were just the best people to ever exist. Douglas is obviously still super involved in the scene but what ever happened to Shane Szocs?

Newschoolers should make a newb's guide to skiing. I know there's a newb guide to NS but not the sport itself. Maybe it could be a thread like the newb guide to NS or there could be a separate newb forum for those kinds of topics. It could include videos, links to important articles/ events, websites etc. Stuff like that to help newbs learn about the sport.

Somebody needs to make a documentary. That would be the perfect place to capture the history in away that would be easy for people to absorb. Something that included the people, the parks etc of the past and how things grew to where they are now.

Kids could watch it and be like "Oh now I understand who tom walrus is!"

Word be great for spreading the sport to even more people and giving the youngins an idea of the roots of the sport. History is extremely important imo. You have to know where you came from. While not necessary for learning a k fed in the park it could help to push them deeper into the sport and help to turn it from a a fun hobby into a lifelong passion.

I have no skills in that department but it would be cool.(at least to me) maybe some people could collaborate. Get some interviews and what not with some of the big names while they're still around and some of the old footage is still accessible. If somebody is completely clueless could just link them to said doc instead of hopelessly trying to explain the history of freeskiing in something people can read.


The mid 90's to now is night and day. Even 10 years ago. IT's insane how much has changed in the sport and action sports in general. People that don't know would be shocked to see how things were back then.

If we had a newb section or some kind of history archive on here, it would be sweet if each of the major film companies (MSP, PBP, L1, TGR) released like the top/most influential segments from each of their films. Even one from each company would be from each year/film could give a pretty good perspective of how the sport has evolved over the years. They each kind of have their niche (TGR - big mountain, L1 - urban, PBP - park, MSP - kind of everything?) and could provide a pretty broad overview.

i am so grateful that i started freeskiing in 2001/2002 because this area of the sport is the only one which keeps me motivated to never stop with the sport and keep doing it as long as my body is strong enough. my first skimovies i watched were happydayz, the scanners, yearbook, high five, session 1242 and so on...
everything back then was completly new.. internet wasnt a big thing where u could watch edits like nowadays. but i loved this time. u had always to wait till fall when the new movies came out, and then when u watched it the first time u were completly blown away what the pros have learned and done in the last winter!! it was absolutly magic. then this revolution began in the 2007, 2008 and so... i mean this revolution of neon colored tall tees, bandanas on the face, afterbanging everything.. no offense! i loved what tom wallisch, jon brogan etc did to the sport technically but i felt a little bit sad i must admit^^ where did the puffyjackets go? why everthing bright and colored like clowns? why is everbody cutting his poles to short sticks?? and most of all: WHY IS EVERBODY FOCUSING SO MUCH ON PARK? and no longer big bc gaps like in teddybearcrisis? (btw: what happened to that genius named kris ostness?? i saw him in few words wearing a surf company tshirt.. is he no longer in the snow business? :/ )

what i think should happen in the future to newschoolers:
have a look at the berrics.com... they are focusing so much on the history lately. and all the young kids get to know the roots of the sport which they love so much. guys they never heard of before beome legends to the kids.
just ask the genius filmakers like iberg, johnny or josh if you colud post old movieparts each month. that would be just awesome.
a respect the past campaign would also be awesome where u interview the pros nowadays which old pro back in the day inspired them to ski..like this in skateboarding:

this is the problem haha, i went to Camp of Champs at 22 years old and basically everyone else there was 13 or 14 and i met a bunch of kids who had never heard of Candide or Shane. Just wait till someone asks you to your face, i was speechless.

2008 when I started looking at the park when I was 9 and that it was pretty cool not until I watched some 2009 joss edits and slumdog illionare did I start seeing it as a community that I wanted to be apart of.

Slightly off to topic but what do you think has created this new surge in new skiers bishop? Do you think it was the Olympics? Tht is what I figure it was and if so then I'm pretty stoked on that. Before the games so many people here said they thought they would have no impact but I think now it is clear it has been good for our sport. More skiers meen more money to the resorts manufacturers and even you guys through extra viewS. So has peoplea opinion on the Olympica changed now?
