Lung Cancer

No not in me... my cat has it..

Try not to hate because this actually means something to me and I'm reaching out to people who have a cat or a dog or any other pet that wouldn't mind giving me a little bit of serious advice. I've had him for about 12 years now and the other week he started getting extremely skinny so I took him to the vet. They said it was either a respiratory infection or lung cancer. Turns out both of those are extremely painful for cats.

Basically what I'm asking is.. if it was you, would you pay the money to try to help your friend get better at this age or as hard as it may be put him down while he isn't in too much pain..

I had a similar situation happen with me. I usually spend a week or so at my "camp" on lake champlain. When I left my cat was fine, when I came back home he wouldn't leave his bed, not to eat or anything (which was super uncharacteristic for him). I monitored him for a few days and he never left his bed unless to drink. Brought him to the vet one day to find out he was going into liver failure (once again out of the blue because he really never had any health issues). He was 14. They told me it would be $2000 to heal him up, money neither I nor my parents had, especially to spend on a cat when we have our own financial issues. I spent 1 last day with him, just had him chillen in a laundry basket (his favorite spot to hang)in my room. Did a healthy amount of crying, then brought him to the vet. They euthanized him in my arms and he just fell asleep. As silly as it sounds it was one of the hardest, saddest things to happen in my life thus far. They took him away and put him in a box and I buried him in my front yard by a rock that day. Took a few days to even start getting over it, especially since he was my cat.

Anyways that was 2 years ago. But I would say this. If you truly love him, think whats in his best interest. Even with medical treatment if he is still gonna suffer I'd say do the right thing and let him go. If you have the money to spare and he can get better,absolutely go for it. Either way think of the animal first and yourself second. Hope this helps.

My cat had cancer and we treated it and he turned out fine, but it definitely could have gone the other way. Granted, my mom was paying for all of the treatment so I didn't have to pay for it out of my own pocket.

If you're planning on paying for it all, it can be quite expensive if I remember correctly and theres not a 100% chance that your kitty will survive.

12 years is a long time, and it may just be that time for him to move on and relieve him of his pain. All in all, its completely up to you and ultimately you're gonna have to use your best judgement. Good luck man, sucks to have to make a choice like this!

similar thing happened with my childhood cat, he went into heart failure and we had to put him down. he was only 9, it sucked.

as tough as it is i would put him down. you don't want him in pain, hold onto the fact that you gave him a good life to make it easier.

well first i would pay for whatever test they need to perform to rule out a respiratory infection. an infection can easily be cured with antibiotics or other treatment.

if they rule that out and they're sure that it is cancer, i would ask what my options are. if they bring up chemo or something like that, with your cat being 12 years old, it may not be worth the combination of you spending thousands on a last ditch hope of treatment, and the poor kitty spending the last of his time on this earth in and out of the vet and with a miserable quality of life.

so I would ask what your options are for treatment. What the cost of the options are and most importantly how they will impact his quality of life.

If it turns out he just straight up as lung cancer, and no reasonable treatment will cure it, and he is in pain, I would ask how long I have left with him where I can give him a reasonable quality of life. So for instance-- if lung cancer is painful, but he is in the beginning stages and isn't in too much pain, they can give you buprenorphine eye droppers that you squirt into his cheek 1-2 times a day. Its a pain killer that will make him feel much better. If he has stopped eating, ask for Hills A/D canned food. It is prescription only and is for ill kitties. Basically its like eating filet mignon. Also if he looks pretty skinny, he is probably dehydrated so you could give him subcutaneous fluids to hydrate him-- although with a lung problem they may say no to this because it could cause pulmonary edema in some cases.

Do whatever you feel comfortable doing for your friend. You're not a bad person if you choose to put him down. You're also not a bad person if you choose to spend some money to see if you can have some more quality time with your pet. If I were you, though, I would rule out the respiratory infection.

Good luck, and I'm sorry. I've been through this a lot and hope your kitty gets better.

Also-- what kind of respiratory infection did they say he may have?

Did they do any tests at all? What did they say his symptoms were? What kind of diagnostics did they do to come to their conclusion? Did they look at his gums and they weren't pink so they concluded lack of oxygen? Give us more details from your visit.

a skinny cat (not eating) that presents with rapid shallow breathing and/or wheezing could also be a cat in kidney failure with related heart failure and pulmonary edema. I would wonder how they came to their conclusion and then based on that maybe ask for a second opinion.

vets are so quick to say "well it could be a sign of cancer"-- I've had to put down three cats over the past year and half, and all three of them at one point I was told "may have cancer"--none of them did.

Just in general, when making these kinds of decisions, you should consider the possible future quality of life your pet could have. If you honestly think your pet could have a life that is good after whatever treatment is under consideration, than that is a fair reason to go through with it.
A year ago, one of my dogs (around 12) started to slowly turn for the worst (having seizures with increasing frequency and severity) and we did all we could to try to keep him alive. At the end of his life, he looked scared and drugged up and just overall sad and as hard as it would have been I think that putting him down before it escalated that far would have been the right thing to do. More recently, another one of our dogs (age 10) started bleeding in his heart. There was an invasive surgery that could have potentially saved him, but his quality of life thereafter would be low (constantly in pain or sore). So, my family and I decided the best thing to do would be to make his last couple of weeks the best we could, giving him minimal amounts of painkillers until he started to show discomfort, and then we said our goodbyes and put him down.
Weighing these kinds of things does not make you immoral or cruel, but really just shows that you have the best interest of your pet in mind. It is hard to say goodbye but in some cases holding on is really not the best and sometimes even selfish when your pet is in pain and can't get better. Hope that helps a little, and that everything turns out for the best.

Also OP on a serious note I would suggest doing the test's to figure out if it is cancer or not antibiotics would be fine and lil key key will make it through. If it does turn out to be cancer I would suggest maybe it is time to let go of Kitty. I had a cat for 19 years of my life(was a family pet that was older than me, but she lived to see 21). The end of her years she went senile and started shitting in the bathtub(I guess she thought it was a litter box). After that she started to get really old and couldn't really do much after that. Couldn't really jump on anything and she started to get really thin so we decided it was best to stop her suffering. She was such an awesome cat she hunted crows and never took shit from any dog, but in the end we all suffer the same fate. It was really sad having to do what we did but at least I got to say my good bye's. She was a tough old cat and she could have probably made it longer but it came down to the quality over quantity. We did end up giving her treats and made her last day a day to be worth it. I remember it being a sunny day and my dad took the cat down there by himself because it would have been too much for all of us to go down there and watch her last moments.

Op I know its a super hard decision. But your kitty is 12 years old. If it were me I would put it down. I know that's a huge thing to say because I'm not in your position. It's getting old, what if the surgery or whatever your doing doesn't really get him back to 100% then you spent tons of money and are still in this predicament. I'm sure you'll make the beat call OP. I believe in you.

obviously op is having a hard time coming to terms with the fact that he has to put his cat down, possibly. He is looking for support, its a hard decision.

OP...my cat is my best friend. I would do anything for her. I would sell my car or even file bankruptcy to save her. Ask yourself, how much do you love your cat? Is it a family member to you or just a pet?

are you serious? Do you have any idea what vet bills cost and how hard of a decision it is to treat an animal with money you can't afford not knowing the outcome, or to choose the other and put them down? You must be trolling.

got his stitches out, and on Monday gets his 4-week xrays to see if the surgery went well and he is healing properly. Then four more weeks of tent confinement. Boring without you.

Ok, so someone goes into the vet with their pet that is senior in age. They find out that said pet is sick, possibly dying, and may not get better even with treatment. They also find out that the illness may cause their pet a great deal of pain. However there is also a chance that if treated, their pet could get better-- to what extent is unknown.

They're left in a position of having to choose to say goodbye to their friend, as they don't want to put the pet through any unnecessary pain, and at 12 their friend has lived a good, long life...or choosing to spend thousands on treating their pet when they are not sure if it will help or not--because there is a chance that it will, and they love their pet and would love to help them if possible.

How is that an easy decision? In what way is it weird for someone to ask for advice in that situation, or seek out empathy from other people who have experienced similar situations?

Something tells me that you're young and haven't been put in a an adult situation like this before.

Just stop god damn... You act like you know what this kid is talking about but you have no idea... You are misinterpreting with what he is saying, clearly haven't had to make a similar decision, and are just being an insensitive douche whether accidentally or intentionally

Dude don't put him down yet. Listen to the vet and get him some medicine. My cat's heath began to diminish at the end of his life, yet he still loved hanging out with me and would always come say hi, want his belly rubbed or sleep next to me on my bed. Even some days he would climb trees like when he was young.

I say try and help the guy out as much as possible, with meds or what ever you can do. I am sure he would rather be hanging with you right now than be dead. Unless he is on the ground ready to die he isn't ready yet. When my cat died it was obvious he wasn't doing well so I gave him some morphine from the Dr. and let him die in peace with the people he loved. I couldn't put him down even though I could have, I grew up with him and found him abandoned when I was 6 years old and he came right up to me. I gave him a new home, and saved him from starving to death. He was like a brother. See how your cat is doing and try and help him out.

he didn't start a poll, kill my cat: y/n. he is looking for advice from people that have gone through the same thing to better inform his decision.

I just want to say thank you to everybody who has posted helpful advice. You have no idea how much it helped this process..

Unfortunately.. Jet is not doing well at all. They had to put an emergency IV in him and he isn't looking very good right now... I think his time is coming pretty soon...

I think its awesome that they have this type of technology to save cats and other animals. sorry about your cat man

is it an IV to hydrate him? I'm sorry your cat isn't doing well, and I don't mean to give you false hope but if its an IV for fluids, he could easily rebound. Give him several days on it.

we took our boy in with severe kidney failure and after four days on IV, they told us his tests hadn't improved enough and he wouldn't survive. We were sent home with him with two weeks to live. We gave him at-home sub-cutaneous treatment and he bounced back. He lived four additional healthy, happy years before succumbing to kidney failure and he was only born with one kidney.

again, every situation is different, but I've seen some pretty unlikely recoveries.
