DSLR users: What mic do you use?

Bout to pick up a gh3 for mostly just ski filming, obviously i need a mic.


Every review I read online is about picking up audio for an interview or some other bullshit (nerds) so I'm asking the fellow ski filmers of NS what mics they use since skiing audio is a bit different than dialogue.

I just use a video mic pro and have loved that setup so far. The ability to change input levels is crucial for me and I like having a smaller size for traveling etc

What he said. Pretty sure mostly everyone round here who has a dslr will say the same thing.

Why the switch from your fs100 to the gh3?

Yeah, I figured many used the rode videomic pro but trying to see if anyone uses lower end mics like azden 990, blatt says his worked pretty well and its only $85.

And I had an opportunity to sell so I took it, I don't need my fs100 really, a dslr will serve me fine for my needs.

the sennheiser mke400 works alright too, it sounds kinda tinny when people are talking but for picking up sound it's fine. You can usually find em used for like 100 bucks or less

I use a videomic pro though, and I was going to grab the mke600 instead, but that's a bit more

I've only used it for skate stuff though, no skiing yet.

I have this too and like it for what it is. If you're looking to keep some money in your pocket, I'd recommend it. It's light, small, and easy to use. However, it'll do a number on your camera battery and the audio quality could be better (but is still relatively good for a shotgun mic).

If Heath does go with this, I definitely would not worry about it draining your battery. These gh3 batteries last an eternity, its ridiculous.

We rent these are work, so far reception is better than Rode. Form factor is tiny as well.

I use an azden 990. Great mic for the money, however for an extra 50$ or so, u can get the videomic or the videomic go which both seem superior

I want to get a used rode videomic but im not exactly sure if I need it. I mean I understand it can be an essential audio tool for videography but Im not sure if I want to just go through with it....
