Epicly Later'd for Skiing. Documenting the not so distant past

If Vice can have an in depth series about skateboarding why cant NS, Freeskier, or any other industry company do it. I know our history of freestyle skiing or new school skiing is not as rich as for example skating, or surfing, I still believe a documentary style series about the most influential, inspiring, unique, original people from our beloved sport should be made.

Im sure we would love to know what goes on in side the mind of people like Tanner Hall, JP Aucliar, Eric Pollard, Pep, Bentchetler, Kyle Decker, Todd Jones, Matt Sterbenz, Luke V, Tom Wallisch, Nick Martini, Henrik, Adam Dolorme, Candide, David Lesh, the guys that created Jibberish (probably should already know that), Line skis, Orage, Will Wesson, Andy Parry, Saga, and a host of other industry folk/companies that are true to our sport.

Ideally the best time to do this would probably be in a few years once more of the boutique brands become more well known i.e Liberty, Moment, Surface, JSkis, Icelantic (quite popular but the history of the company is pretty cool). etc.

Freeksier and the late Freeze have it pretty much covered in text form but I feel like we still need that intimate documentary style approach.
Granted there are those like 4 youtube videos or Mike Douglas telling us the story of the Canadian air force and the birth of newschool skiing. It would be like those but for a lot more different skiers and visionaries.

For some reason I have held off from making this post but......

Epicly later'd is an awesome series and all skiers would benefit from having a doc-style archive of our history. It would also help the new generation of kids who can't read good. Good idea, someone execute!

just a note, vice did a freeskiing doc and it wasn't super well received, on here at least. i haven't seen it but i guess it concentrated more on the olympics/comp scene

In no way do i condone Vice doing this. I believe it should be done within the industry. Somone like Eheath could do it... well maybe. I guess it really depends on who has the most access to the most footage, and who can dedicate a massive chunk of their time to it.

And I know Vice did their spiel on it but it wasnt really what us NSers where really wanting.

This would never work as well as Epicly Later'd. First and foremost, Patrick O'Dell is a genius with long term relations with everyone he interviews.

Second, and PLEASE DONT HATE ME FOR SAYING THIS; skiers have nowhere near as interesting lives or upbringings as most skateboarders, you can't compare the the two. Yes there are outliers (Pollard, Glen Plake, etc), but the average pro skier came from a nice home close to a ski hill with means to afford nice things and trips, and probably doesn't own a company or make amazing art or music. While it's changing now, for the most part pre 2005 pro skateboarders came from broken homes, from abuse, from drugs; the reason they have made it thus far is because they literally owe their lives to skateboarding.

I guess you could make shorter 5-15 minute videos on a few pros, but no where near the length or volume of what O'Dell has created.

This is exactly the answer I kinda wanted. I know that skiers dont have as hard of a life as skaters but like you said it is changing, once more companies start popping up i feel like we will be able to find some great stories.

I also wonder who skiers equivialent to O'Dell is, maybe Henrik Lampert or even Jeff Schmuk.

I said skateboarding is changing, it's cleaned up its image, but even younger pro's like Nyjah still have incredible stories. Skiing is definitely changing, but my point was more you can't compare it to skateboarding, and I doubt you ever will be able too.

I'd lean more towards someone like Mike Douglas.

Here's the problem, you automatically jump to comparing "freestyle skiing" to skateboarding or surfing as a whole claiming our history is not as rich. Of course it's not...surfing has been around since the 1700s and skateboarding since the 40's or 50's...Our brand of "freestyle" skiing has only really been around since about 1997 so only 17ish years...

What you should be looking at is the history of skiing as a whole with the first wooden ski being discoverd north of Moscow dating back to 6300-5000BC...people used to use skis as a method of transportation through the snow during the long winters in northern countries. If you want skiing as a sport, the first known ski jumper was in 1809.

In all honesty, the history of "newschool" is nothing more than skiers trying to catch up to snowboarders that were doing the same tricks 10 years earlier. It became a combination of the tricks mogul skiers and snowboarders had been doing with skiers adopting the snowboarder clothing styles as well.

If you want something really interesting, watch the documentary "Steep"
