hughlorinUNR? it's not bad at all, I enjoy it here. college anywhere is gonna be what you make of it. the school itself is decent, the campus looks like a college, and they are putting a shit ton of new buildings on campus which should be done by the time you get here (assuming you're a HS senior right now). the newer dorms are pretty nice and if you do a little bit of research on rate my professor you can find really great/easy teachers. the city itself isn't bad either, it grows on you for sure. the people are generally pretty nice, and finding parties/hook ups and shit isn't really an issue if you meet the right people. idk if you're looking to join any sort of greek life, but we do have that here. I'm personally not a fan of the greek system at all, but if that's your thing you can find it here.
have you or are you planning to visit reno?
I think the coolest thing is being like 40 minutes to 1.5 hours away from like 6 huge resorts. if you get the vail tahoe/epic pass, you get access to northstar, kirkwood, and heavenly. there are rumors they might buy mt. rose as well, so that's 4 resorts you can potentially have unlimited access to. northstar had one of the best park setups I've skied, they have a ton of stuff for every skill level. boreal is kinda whack but can also be fun, passes there are cheap and they do a $15 friday deal for college students. we got a lot of decent snow this season so things are looking up around the tahoe area, it probably would be a good time to be in tahoe/reno if it keeps up.
.lenconYeah senior in HS. I'll probably just stay in a normal dorm, not about the Greek life at all, at least some of what I've seen. Id probably get a squaw pass. And Idk about visiting. I think I'd like it from what I've read/heard but being 8-9 hours away it's kinda hard to get out there.
What's the best way to find someone to room with? Also what are the best rooms/cheapest options? I have to stay in a dorm my fresh year with the scholarship but if I wait a year then transfer. Also how's the fly fishing scene? Cause that's gonna be my new sport.
And also I'm probably taking the pre Med route or something very similar.
Profahoben_212Yeeeee right here.
There is a freestyle team here. It's getting re-vamped next year though from what I hear. Hmu man
hughlorinwhere do you usually ski at? I feel like I don't see a ton of guys on NS in reno/tahoe.

Profahoben_212There is actually quite a few of us around. I mostly ski squaw/alpine. But I have a vail pass too so I go to northstar/kirkwood sometimes.
hughlorinokay good, fuck greek life lol. it's like what you've seen but way more gross. the squaw/alpine pass wouldn't be bad, though I'd personally probably go with the tahoe local college pass from vail, as it's around the same price for way more skiing. it's honestly whatever if you don't visit before you come. I was in the same boat as you, I didn't see reno or the campus until I was up here for freshman orientation and I liked it just fine.
as far as finding a roommate, they'll assign you a random one (or more, depending on the dorms you stay in) unless you specifically ask otherwise. I ended up rooming with someone from my high school, so that's how I got my roommate. if you really don't want a random roommate, and there is someone you don't hate from your HS then you could request them as a roommate.
as far as the dorms go, I'd recommend argenta or peavine. both are 3 to a room instead of 2, but you get your own bathroom and they have AC and heat, and are all around newer. idk what they are calling the new dorm, but I'm sure that wouldn't be a bad place to stay once they get it built, if it's even done by next year. the LLC isn't terrible either. basically it's 3 rooms linked to one hallway with a bathroom and sink and some closet space, with 2 people in each room. my cousin and his friends are in the LLC right now and they seem to like it. I'm pretty sure all the dorms are around the same price anyways. the meal plan is what's gonna be pricier. I'd take a look at those and decide how much you really eat as far as the price goes.
I haven't fly fished since I've been in reno, but I'm sure there is some decent stuff in the truckee river/lakes around here. a quick google search on it looked pretty promising, and I've definitely seen people out fly fishing and stuff around tahoe/truckee. it wouldn't be a bad place to fly fish by any means.
UNR's pre med is pretty good as far as I understand, and you'll definitely have some work cut out for you. college chemistry and biology are no joke, so you'll have to be able to balance school work with your free time. you should still have plenty of time to ski on the weekends, though.
will you have a car? cus having a car in reno is a definite benefit.
.lenconWill probably have a car, and also wondering about what parking pass to get.
I'll probably stay with the squaw pass. It's been a dream to ski there, but who knows I got time and research to do.
No one from my high school is going there, so maybe I'll find a fellow nser or Facebook group idk.
And yes the pre med route is serious but I should be able to do it, just need focus.
I'm still looking at dorms like a standard double, not sure what hall but on the website it said "standard double" and it was the cheapest. The Sierra and juniper halls look nice tho, not sure if freshman can live there tho. And for meals I'd probably get the C plan, since that's what I've been recommended. Then just have snacks and what not besides that.
I emailed UNR tho and asked about the scholarship deadline so we'll see if I will even apply this year. If not I'll do a year at home then transfer.
T.O.I go to UNR currently and love it here.

T.O.So I came from Alaska and didn't know what to expect, besides I just came here to mainly get out of state for college, live close to good skiing, and not pay alot for tuition. Last year I lived in Argenta with a friend of mine from Alaska. It was such an awesome experience for me. My room as a kid was like 4 times the size of the dorm and had it's own bathroom connected. So going to such a small room shared with a close friend and shared bathrooms amongst the floors was totally new to me. But I loved every second of it and made really good friends from living in Argenta.
Education wise I feel UNR is your typical university education wise. I'm a business student right now and can't complain about the quality of the classes, its what you make of it. The only thing I can complain about is once you hit the 300 level courses its a pain in the ass to get the classes you want without them filling up. I bet this issue is typical at every school though.
You can't beat the skiing here for how close it is. Last year I got a Squaw/Alpine pass and only probably got 12 days the whole season lol. So this year I decided to get a Northstar pass incase the season wasn't that good snow fall wise. I loved Northstar's park considering I'm coming from Alyeska Resort in Alaska. Probably got like 40 days in if you count Boreal(Bought a night pass). If you wan't real terrain though, you are going to have to visit Kirkwood or get a Squaw/Alpine pass. This upcoming season I've decided I'm gonna get a Squaw/Alpine pass since I know so many people getting them.
If you got any other questions let me know.
Profahoben_212Yeah. Northstar has a killer park, but you just can't compete with squaw on a terrain level except for driving all the way to kwood. Which is a hell of a drive to do each day haha. I think I'm around 70ish days now with all my passes combined. Most of my buddies are going squaw next year too. And now that the freestyle team isn't going northstar...I am not going to get a vail pass.

T.O.You ride Surface skis with 3 stage rocker? I think I saw you at Boreal couple weeks ago.
hughlorinbtw what happened to the campus rail jams? it seems like they used to have them a few years back, now it seems like the skiing scene at UNR is kinda dead.
Profahoben_212Michael was trying to set one up but I geuss it didn't go through.
.lenconSo does squaw not usually get good snow?
.lenconSo does squaw not usually get good snow?
Profahoben_212Last 4 years really fucked everything here. This year was much much much better....it snowed a fuck load more...which is a good...hopefully leaving the drought behind.
.lenconWell I'd like to go squaw if it's good snow. But yeah I need to worry about housing/parking/getting in before I worry about skiing haha.
Profahoben_212Good idea haha. You always got a ride with me. If my schedule works I'll be skiing 5 days a week again....yeet
.lenconWhat year are you? Also do your pre med friends find the time to ski? Or do they not get out much?
.lenconWhat year are you? Also do your pre med friends find the time to ski? Or do they not get out much?
Profahoben_212I'll be a sophmore. And it's your freshman year...you'll be doing pretty much the same shit as everyone else.
I'm a CHS public health major. Not the hardest major in the world. Lol. But all my pre-recs are the same. I could ski Tuesday thursday Friday saturday sunday this semester. It Kicked ass
hughlorinreally though, freshman year classes are super easy and general. it's not really until sophomore/junior year that you'll start taking harder classes.
.lenconAlright, thank you both so much. I think that's all the questions I have for now but if you have anything else to say I'd love to hear it. UNR should be contacting me tomorrow about the scholarship and if it's still open then I'll submit the app. Stoked and hopefully I can be down there this fall or next!
Profahoben_212And now that the freestyle team isn't going northstar...I am not going to get a vail pass.
dkirseWait, since when? Is everybody doing Squaw now?
Profahoben_212Well....I heard that there isn't going to be an actual freestyle team...it's gunna be joined kinda with the alpine team. But we're still gunna do hoodrat shit. Lol
