Ryno (Moderator) got hit by a truck- a warning

Hey all,

My brother Ryan, an NS Moderator on here was recently hit by a truck while biking home from work. The truck driver drove off without rendering any assistance as my brother laid in the intersection.

Out of it all his upper arm was broken in two places, he cracked a rib and got a fairly major concussion to boot.

The reason I'm posting on his behalf is that he can't. And I wouldn't be posting at all if he wasn't wearing his helmet. The doctor made it quite clear that if he wasn't wearing it he would be dead.

The point of this post is simple: WEAR YOUR FUCKING HELMETS

It's so simple to do and even better is that pretty much everyone does now. The sad part is that I still see lots of people on bikes and on the ski hills wearing nothing.

The site asks for a minimum $500 campaign in order to create the page.

PLEASE do not feel obligated to raise anywhere near that amount. I was hoping for $160 to buy him a new helmet and maybe some reflective equipment.

CVRPVTMNCHRI don't know if I should be sad that people can hurt others and leave knowing that they might not survive, or mad that they have the audacity to not even check to see if they are ok just because they think that it's always the bikers fault.

Way more likely they just freaked out and did a "I gotta get the fuck out of here". It's a shit situation and he probably would have gotten in trouble but people gotta take responsibility for their actions. Suck it up and fucking help the guy. If they catch the person hopefully the penalties are harsh.


Also get better man. Shit sucks. Hope the brain is alright. Ive always warn my helmet for the last 8 or 9 years. I would probably be dead or a vegetable if not. Hope recovery goes smoothly and they catch the asshole.

Some lovely soul donated $100. I just threw some in. Considering the fact that it was done in CAD, I'm guessing you guys are from Canada? I don't know how all the healthcare nonsense goes up there, but my vote goes toward this:

Anything raised past his helmet needs should be kept for him to pay any bills or medical needs. Especially with broken bones and casts coming his way, he might need a little extra beer to take the edge off.

I can't believe the support and kind words you guys have offered me here. It really did bring me to tears. I am still coming to the reality of this situation and how fortunate I am to even be able to communicate with people like this and that things weren't worse for me. No matter how silly the events in our lives get, taking the small safety concerns so we can continue doing these things cannot be understated. Years ago I watched my best friend get hit by a van while we were longboarding and that imagine has been burned into my mind as a lesson in how quickly our fortunate lifestyles can be turned around on us. I'm sure most of you have experienced or seen severe events like this as well. I know that the mental image of his head hitting the windshield is part of the reason I throw on that helmet every day I bike or ski, no matter how small or insignificant the ride may be. Please people, don't ever be "too cool for safety". My head is still pretty scrambled when it comes to putting together thoughts though and I have to go lay down again and rest now. But thank you again, when you feel like this, it's crazy how much all these words and thoughts have meant to me while I lay bed ridden.

If we are part of this community we are some of the fortunate few in this world that can enjoy these freedoms, let's never forget that. I want to continue seeing all your smiling faces enjoying whatever it is you've doing :)

Damn. That's... damn. I hope they do find the guy. You'd think he'd need some body work or something. I know out west here if you have to get a repair you have to report it to the police so they can make sure there aren't any matching hit and runs.

That's how it was when I got hit. It doesn't mean they can't find the guy though! Stay positive about it and if it you feel strongly about finding out who did it, keep pressure on the cops. It might be a long shot but that doesn't mean they shouldn't try their hardest.

is there any way that someone could call local auto body shops and ask if any trucks have come in to be fixed with damage resembling that of hitting a bike/person?

Hell yea k2! I'd suggest the rant! I've taken many shots to the head with mine. I've had it since 2010 aND use it for skiing and skating.

Damn that's sad.

Here in South Dakota it is the Sturgis motorcycle rally. I think we have had 2 deaths so far, and the average is around ten. It is a sad week.

Very scary, I wish him a speedy recovery. Also hope they catch the guy. A girl at my school was injured in a hit and run. They caught the guy, had multiple DUI's and was believed to be drunk at the time (early morning). Absolutely no excuse for leaving someone like that. I'll check back here for progress/posts about a care package.

Hit and runs have been a serious issue in Denver this summer.
Driver was probably drunk, but even a sober person might drive away terrified.
Had to take a defensive driver class to keep my license from speeding, and a lot of the people there were because of hit and runs. Sadly, if you're drunk and you hit something (not someone), you're far better off leaving the scene and dealing with it later (saves a DUI)
