Ryno (Moderator) got hit by a truck- a warning

Hey all,

My brother Ryan, an NS Moderator on here was recently hit by a truck while biking home from work. The truck driver drove off without rendering any assistance as my brother laid in the intersection.

Out of it all his upper arm was broken in two places, he cracked a rib and got a fairly major concussion to boot.

The reason I'm posting on his behalf is that he can't. And I wouldn't be posting at all if he wasn't wearing his helmet. The doctor made it quite clear that if he wasn't wearing it he would be dead.

The point of this post is simple: WEAR YOUR FUCKING HELMETS

It's so simple to do and even better is that pretty much everyone does now. The sad part is that I still see lots of people on bikes and on the ski hills wearing nothing.

Forgot to add, the helmet is pretty much destroyed. There's a large crack and the foam is compressed. As you can see he lost a fair amount of blood from a large laceration on the side of his head and some road rash to the ear.

This all can heal...stay safe when you're ripping out there.

Holy shit. It's stuff like this that led me to wear my helmet all the time. It's pretty scummy that the guy didn't stop for him.

I'm happy it wasn't as bad as it could have been. Feel better ryno!

The primary purpose for this thread is just education and awareness. The idea to pitch in money is greatly appreciated although not necessary. If you would like to send a get well card or care package PM for an address. Any messages from the skiing community would be a great way to get his spirits up.

Unfortunately the local police haven't caught the individual as there are few witnesses. Fingers crossed.

That's a great idea, I'd like him to get a new helmet that's higher end now that he's a little more fragile in the noggin.

The bike actually made it out just fine. Not sure how because no one was around to witness.

as it happened in an intersection, were there any security cameras around to film the incident/person who left?

a similar thing happened to a good friend of mine. he was hit my a truck from behind and drug underneath for 50 yards or so until the truck stopped, dislodged him, and then left him, unconscious, in the road. thankfully someone happened upon him and called the ambulance. they said the same thing, if he wasn't wearing his helmet he would have been dead.

i know this might be a dumb question seeing as its a head injury but did your brother get an idea of the truck? was it just a pick up or a larger commercial vehicle? really sickening to hear some people wont even offer assistance after damn near killing you. glad to hear your brothers alright, though.

I would like to set up a donation thinger for getting Ryan a new brain bucket. Any tips on how to do this? I want to make it legit and accountable for every dollar.

Also I'd just like to add a bit shout out to Osprey backpacks- they offered to replace my brothers pack as it was destroyed by the accident and paramedics. That's a company worth supporting.

I wonder if you could just do like a kickstarter or something with a total of how much a new but better brain bucket would be. Guaranteed you would make however much you would need for it.

I will look into kick starter soon. Not even sure what a good helmet costs.

Any surplus will go to a charity that is involved with rehabilition for head injuries.

So far all we have is a description of the truck. No plate number but hopefully the guy is a local. The link to the news story went viral by Oshawa standards so I just hope the asshole at least reads it.

When I was younger I was hit by someone and it was the same kinda thing, hit and run. They didn't have a description, no witnesses, no cameras and I didn't remember anything. I remember everyone thinking it would be pretty much impossible to find out who it was without a confession. Somehow they ended up finding the guy from a paint/rust chip that was on my shirt from when he hit me.

I'm hoping they get some kind of a lead like that and they find out who did that to Ryan. Damn, that really is just such a shitty thing to do to someone..

If by good you mean a helmet that offers enough protection, price is pretty irrelevant, they all meet the standards. If you mean high end, comfortable, good fit, well ventilated, and the like, you're looking at about $90-$125 for a bike helmet. I have a Giro Savant and love it, it's my main cycling helmet, but he should go to a LBS (local bike shop) and try some on and pick the one that is most comfortable for him.

I've had some close calls with cagers (drivers) a few times, and sorta got sideswiped once, and got doored once, and had a few very near misses. Worst that ever happened to me was injured (broken?) ribs, but I missed being hit directly by a few centimeters or less once. Good to hear your brother is okay.

That's super tough to stomach.Can relate to this kind of situation- I had a TBI two years ago because a snowboarder hit me. He fled the scene and left me laying in the snow with a class of kids. Northstar never found him. (Kinda like how we never found the asshole who pushed me from the lift.) I hope that dude gets what's coming.
Hopefully your brother has a speedy recovery.

(Also, I wrote Smith a letter thanking them for doing such an ace job on their helmets, and how it saved my life. I ended up getting a free helmet and goggles form them. Try writing the company of your brother's helmet, they may hook it up, or help get him a new one for cheaper.)

Hearing about incidents like this ticks me off. As a road biker/commuter myself I see plenty of morons who don't pay attention, are on their cell phone, or just plain don't know how to drive. Vehicles are death on wheels and there are too few people who realize that. I'd be glad to contribute to the cause, get better soon Ryan.

wow ryno thank god you're alive. hoping for a speedy recovery! seriously though when you're on a bike the only thing that is between you and the road/other objects is a helmet and your clothes. so wear a helmet
