Ive only skied backcoutry once, so i dont know much but, Why does it seem that tuckerman ravine, mount washington NH is more dangerous than any other steep backcountry spot.I have never heard of anyone skiing it during the winter. Is it because of the low elevation/snow that creates a higher probability of avalanches? does anyone know?

may be because the snow is very thin and un predictable, but i wouldnt know im not from the east coast. but thats my guess, thats why the majoity of places that are not skied are not.

I don't live around there, but there was a thread about this somewhere else where I picked up some info... People do ski it in the winter, but it's dangerous. Pretty serious terrain for the EC. Mt. Washington also has some of the worst weather in the world, so going out there in the winter is a pretty serious thing - plenty of people have died/lost limbs out there both from avalanches and from exposure.

The highst recorded wind on earth was recorded at the weather station up there. Over 250 mph. That much wind equalls very cold windchill

As far as avalanche danger
- It's steep and open, so few anchors for the snowpack, prime avy terrain
- Very cold there, so weak layers could be very long lasting and stubborn.
- It's very, very windloaded by the world famous winds around Mt. Washington, which increases the danger even more.

it's also very unpredictable weather, because it is its own micro-climate up there. That leads to unpredictable snowpack as well.

^ya the weather is out of control up there, so unpredictable. so many people have died there
