Yeah I use a flip phone. It's cheap as hell and I can still communicate.
My Problem: I bought a Rugby 3 this May before heading to Alaska. Have owned a rugby 2 for last 3 years (multiple phones) and it was great.
Didn't get the memo that rugby 3 suck balls. Terrible audio and connection.
Any other people here who have non-smart phones can make some recommendations on cell phones. something semi durable with good audio and connection.
To all the fools who are gonna tell me to get a smart phone, my parents don't sponsor me so I can't afford it.
yea I was in your boat, my Nokia finally broke after years and years of abuse. I was looking for just a simple phone that makes calls and texts and that's it, but all the simple phones that they make these days have gone down in quality a lot and really suck ass. That and they don't actually cost that much less than the cheap smartphones. Ended up spending $150 on an xperia m and can't say I can complain.
i first had this samsung convoy phone.
I had it for about 3 years with no problems at all. and i absolutely loved it. battery would last about 4-5 days and i would use it alot for texting and calling. plus it has t9 so i can literally text without looking, so i can text on my motorcycle and while driving my truck.
plus its waterproof so you can call people underwater if youre into that. and you dont have to worry about getting it wet when you go swimming, fishing, etc.
I then decided to give into the trend and got a smart phone. It was the casio commando lte.
and i hated it. battery would last about 5 hours and it took 6 hours to charge. it was always freezing and i had to restart it. Granted, it was nice to have certain apps like email, and snapchat. But the 30 bucks a month for data was a joke cause I rarely used any data. This phone lasted about 2.5 months before I broke the screen by dropping it a foot onto my floor.
I now went back to the flip phone and got the motorolla barrage.
The camera isnt the best and it doesnt have a flash, but i rarely use my phone for that anyway. Its pretty much the same phone as the samsung convoy with it being water, shock and dust proof.
But anyway, thats the history of my phones hahah sorry for rambling.
But I would tell you to get the samsung convoy. I loved it.
I had a flip phone until about 6 months ago. Just the standard Samsung flip (S275 or something). It wasn't rated as being dust/waterproof or anything but I put that thing through hell and back and it survived. And the battery lasted for more than a week. I'm surprised the Rugby is so shitty, that sucks. Maybe just tough it out for now?
i have owned a number of flip phones over the years- i had a bad habit of losing them. my preference is one with a full keyboard still. the last 2 i had have been pretty good, samsung alias or alias 2
no buttons on the front for pocket dialing (was a problem with the env2 i briefly owned). only thing i don't like is it doesn't respond to the whole group when you get a group text.

p.s. i'll sell it to you for a reasonable price if you want it. i have a smart phone for work and have been phasing out the number i use with the flip- it would be good motivation to finally get rid of it completely.
Very basic, doesn't do anything but text and talk. But I really don't care. I don't want to be sucked into buying smart phone.
It is fairly bomb proof, many, many days of skiing, and a few times ive thrown it... Decent and clarity for reception. I got no beef, minus the shitty t-9 texting.

I used to have that phone like 5 years ago. I thought it was the shit.
GzOne Rock. Best phone ever made. I had this phone for years up until I had to get an iPhone for my work 2 years ago. I would still go back to it. Waterproof, durable as fuck, sexy, rubberized outside. Got a ton of sweet outdoorsy apps on it. Flip phones peaked when they made this.
My parents didn't sponsor me and I have a smart phone. Sure its the iphone 3gs, but I fucking love it and am having a real hard time justifying moving to the 4 (my last 3 phones were 3gs, 3g, and 3gs). I've bought all of them myself and pay my own bill. Get with the times.
i love flip phones just for the soul fact you can slam that bitch shut to hang up on someone like fuck you bitch! smack. much cooler then taping your screen furiously

Had one for five years. Went through stuff that would kill most other phones. Never broke while skating with it in my pocket, I spilled like half a bottle of water on it and it was fine after some drying. I lost in the snow for two hours at night while skiing, found it, then made a phone call. Plus it's not a flip mechanism, so it won't snap in half. Still works too, but I got a smartphone...

haha, I had several of these when they first came out. The "chocolate"-- I had a black one and a white one-- lost the white one in the snow, go figure, but it was replaced with insurance.
If OP wants this phone, I have a black one and a white one somewhere that I'm willing to give away.
I had no idea they still made flip phones. Oddly enough, two weeks ago when my galaxy S3 shit the bed, I used my old flip phone from 2005 (first phone i ever had) for a week until I got a replacement smartphone. I will say, T9word skills are not as perishable as i would've thought. I was as fast as i was when i was 17.
snobunnyyou can opt out of the data if you want though, and just have the nicer phone.
As of a few years ago Verizon wouldn't allow certain phones unless you have a data plan. This included pretty much all smart phones. Maybe this has changed since or is different with other carriers

Yeah I have AT&T. They require data on all smart phones. Kinda sucks.

I bet I can out type my self on the chocolate than I can on the iphone. They keys are closer together and there's less to hit.
DeebieSkeebiesyeah man, you definitely need your parents financial support to get a smartphone.
clown shoes, bro. youre fucking clownshoes.
I really don't think it's worst the extra $500 a year to surf insta. I would rather spend that on a new set of skis.
I have an iPod that I can do the same things with, hell even text with if I wanted to, wherever there is wifi. So I don't really see the reason to pay the extra money.

I've heard that Ipod can also make phone calls or skype. Does that work well in the ipod touch? Should I consider an Ipod touch as my phone and be done with a contracted phones all together?

I have seen it done before, but I haven't done that. I could see ditching contracts and just using a pay as you go phone for when you don't have wifi. The iPod works really well.

Can you not buy pay as you go data in the States?
Why not just pick up a super cheap iphone 3 and then do payg?

Totally agree on the iPhone. Whenever I use my fiancées I go full retard and hit all the letters with my fat thumbs. On my galaxy it's much easier with a qwerty keyboard because go the size. Plus, now I pretty much always swype.
