Ski tuning :peeling back the sidewall

so basically im tuning my skis and i have all the right stuff and i know how to do it. (1 degree base guide, files, diamond stones, waxing kit, the whole nine yards) i basically need my sidewalls peeled back just a bit. ive seen videos of shops doing this when they tune your skis, but is their any way i can do this at home? any help is appreciated and k+ to good answers

the tool thats used is called a side wall planer (duh) but i just dont have the money to buy one. is their any other way?

Anything that chews plastic can take it off, so even a belt sander would work. However, for clean edges, its got to be cut with some sort of blade/planer, and it has to be 90 degrees to the base for best results. A wood planer and a homemade jig that holds it while riding along the base perhaps?

The thing to remember with tuning at home is you will not be able to do it all so don't try. Have a shop do the parts you can't. There is no way you could base hrinf and restructure at home so I like to get big work like this done first and then I'll finish off the edges and waxing.

Not sure why this was down voted so I'll try to explain again. With tuning at home you can only ever do so much. There just is no way to base grind, stone grind ect at home. People have tried belt sanders ect but more often then not it ruins the skis. So for the parts you can not do at home such as resurfacing te sidewall in your case get a shop to do it. It's better to pay a little to get it done right then to attempt to do it at home an end up fucking your skis.

Waxing and edgeing I will always do at home but you just need to be realistic in what you can and can't achieve at home.

A handheld bastard file works fine for sidewalls. Easiest with a piece about 4-6 inches long, so chop your old one in half for stuff like this and treat yourself to a new one for base work.

I don't tune my skis because I live in an apartment and don't have much space to set up a ski bench. When I have a house I will do most things myself.
