"Sierra Leone’s president declared a state of emergency Thursday over the largest outbreak of the Ebola virus in history, drafting in security forces and placing restrictions on movement to combat the spread of the deadly virus.

Ebola has infected more than 1,200 people in three West African countries, and killed close to 700 of them. The outbreak received extra media attention when two Americans became infected, and a Liberian man with family in the United States died."

The largest ever Ebola outbreak continues to go on in northwestern Africa, with over 1,200 infected and 700 dead. Worse than this is that most fear that the outbreak will only continue to grow in the upcoming weeks.

Ebola is some scary shit with its around 60% mortality rate, and it is not a pleasant way to go out either. While most experts say that the chance of it leaving the African continent is highly unlikely, it will be interesting to see if it actually will. Especially since it is only getting worse.

It isn't an airborne illness. It's not like the flu where it can spread by casual contact. This helps when quarantining the disease. I don't think it will leave Africa.

Why on earth would it have to get to Europe to go to the US? It's spread by contact with bodily fluids and aeroplanes are considered a major risk. It's just as likely an infected person could arrive in the US direct as it is someone in europe getting infected and then going to the US.

Signs and symptoms

EVD(Ebola virus disease) is a severe acute viral illness often characterized by the sudden onset of fever, intense weakness, muscle pain, headache and sore throat. This is followed by vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, impaired kidney and liver function, and in some cases, both internal and external bleeding. Laboratory findings include low white blood cell and platelet counts and elevated liver enzymes.

People are infectious as long as their blood and secretions contain the virus. Ebola virus was isolated from semen 61 days after onset of illness in a man who was infected in a laboratory.

The incubation period, that is, the time interval from infection with the virus to onset of symptoms, is 2 to 21 days.


That means someone could not show symptoms up to 21 days after being infected.

You should add an option to your poll of "I sure as hell hope not."

It's not very likely that it will make it to North America - although it is possible. The symptoms are often delayed in showing up, so people could have come back from infected areas without knowing they are infected. Transmission of ebolavirus requires direct contact of body fluids of an infected person or animal, so it's not as likely to spread across continents as something that is airborne.

Just try not to eat any bushmeat and you're good to go.

modern hospitals have sophisticated containment methods for diseases like ebola, if it does make it to the US/Europe its unlikely that it will become a major outbreak.

The chances of it haivng a major outbreak is high but we have the proper medical facilities in NA/Europe to take care of the issue. I doubt it would take more lives than the H1N1 virus did when we had an outbreak of that in North America.

Speaking of Ebola I know someone or know someone who knew someone that got Ebola from eating magic mushrooms. They survived being infected with Ebola. I mean it probably wasn't a walk in the park but they were still alive.

The doctor who was over there treating it got Ebola and is a fucking outstanding man. When offered an experimental serum for the disease, he asked that it be given to a nurse who he worked with that was also infected. They only had one dose.

Sadly, it has already made it here. I read somewhere that one of the dr's is coming back to the states and they arent sure how to handle it. Also read that there are currently two cases of ebola in Texas at the moment. Scary shit.

I haven't read anything about it being in Texas. The affected doctor that the news is talking about is from Texas.

And yes it is coming to America for the first time. Hand delivered to a medical facility in Atlanta. An Ebola patient is being brought back to an Atlanta hospital for care.

^ I don't like this one bit. Why would you willingly bring an affected individual over seas? They won't even confirm if the patient is a US citizen. The news says that it is most likely two US medical workers, but none of them can confirm it.

The only reason I can think of is that the CDC wants a new batch of the virus to study and help to "protect the well-being of its citizens."

relax guys, the CDC is one of the few government agencies that actually does their job. The guys they brought back aren't going to spread it. Unlike their african counterparts, people here are better trained and have the equipment and facilities to handle stuff like this.

I highly doubt it will make it out of Africa, you have to come in direct contact with bodily fluids to contract it. there are a lot of false claims in the media as usual, seems really those actually at risk are the very doctors and nurses trying to treat the patients.

The reason the outbreak, in Africa specifically, has been so rapid is how certain cultures care for the dead (ie cleaning the body, ceremonial burial, etc), and also general lack information in the public up until now.

Damn thats really interesting. The CDC claims the decision to bring the US doctors infected with Ebola was made by the group they worked for. They also said the group made that decision because they wanted the doctors to be "with their families" as well. That group is a christian based organization though, not a government one so I don't see how thats possible. There has to be a law that says the Feds get to make those kind of decisions.

I don't know why the US Government does these kind of stuff though. I just know that it sounds pretty damn sketchy.

this is a new mutation its 97% like ebola. there was a study done with animals that showed ebola can become airborne. These guys as well as the top ebola doctor in Africa became infected as well as many heath workers. Though they do not have the sophisticated airborne containment procedures we have here, they would have been aquatically protected against bodily fluids (world health organization standards). Whether it has become airborne is up to debate but it is the most contagious strain we have seen yet killing twice as many people as in the second largest out break in kikwit. There is however a experimental vaccine given to the two American health workers that have had positive results

Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City is testing a male patient for Ebola, but the man is "unlikely" to have the virus, the New York City Health Department said.


Let's hope so. If there is an Ebola outbreak in NYC, it would be catastrophic.

I know it's hard to spread, but it's the city, constant contact of people to people in the streets and on the subways. The virus appears in the sweat of infected people who are showing symptoms. So if he was sweating walking through the streets and you were to rub against him and them touch your mouth or eyes, you could get it.

Hard to spread, but in close confinement areas like Manhattan it is possible to spread rapidly. Even with our "state of the art facilities, which are designed to handle such cases."

I'm not saying this is some end of the world shit, but it isn't "oh it's only Ebola" either. Necessary steps should be taken to keep the possibility of individuals coming back from western Africa and instantly be walking through times square. It just seems silly to me that everyone in the US is still all laid back with what's going on.

It is a little different, a city of 8.3 million versus a state of 1.3 million. If it were to be Ebola, the speed and ease at which it would spread would be catastrophic. Even the US would not be able to handle an outbreak in NYC. You would need martial law to contain the panic I would imagine.

Ebola, while it is scary, is transmitted through bodily fluids, not the air. The likely hood of it reaching the US and becoming an outbreak is super low. US quarantine pocedures and medical technology are far more advanced than people think and it would not be difficult for the US to quickly stop Ebola if it starts showing up here.

No, a case with similar symptoms (gastrointestinal discomfort and a high fever) made it to NY. Lets be very clear, that is such a common symptom to many diseases/viruses so it is impossible to say for certain it is ebola. Instead, Mt. Sinai looked at his recent travel history and decided it would be in the best interests of everyone to be 100% sure it was not Ebola.

I sure as hell hope not. I just hope people are aware of it. It is spreading rapidly over in Africa currently. Nigeria, one of the more technologically advanced countries in Africa, is experiencing its second case. It is not a disease that can be treated currently, therefore, 1st world countries should be paying attention.

yeah, that's kinda on point. Pretty much every form of food poisoning has those symptoms, go to any undeveloped/developing country and you're likely to pick up something.

Exactly. Can you imagine the hysteria if people had learned second hand about this? Mt. Sinai did the right thing and publicized it as a means to calm everyone down.

If anyone wants to a read a non-fiction book about viral hemorrhagic fevers check out The Hot Zone by Richard Preston. I read that when I was 13, it scared the living daylights out of me.
