Judging from google earth it looks like a pretty rad spot.

this place sucks, no chicks, no pow, flat as fuck, and the park is half assed. Check out Vail, I hear it's pretty sweet.

From what I remember it was rather flat. There is some good snow but I wouldnt want to make it my home resort.

Well let me go into this a bit more, as I do know some stuff as it pertains to my job...


I'm not possibly moving there based on snow or steep or parks. I am moving there for work.

Also, the place is not flat. And they do get a fair amount of snow. Last year was great for them.


I am more interested in town, atmosphere, living, what to do, places near, etc...

I went and rode there like 4 years ago. It was wet heavy snow and some places the snow looked like driveway sat.

Last year was far from great, I live in Steamboat and the numbers look date but we had very few days where it snowed more than 6 inches. That being said, Steamboat is awesome. I've lived here and grown up here for the last 10 years, and it has been a great experience. I don't know if I would move here if I was older though. The mountain and town are both pretty cool, but it does feel pretty damn small sometimes. The mountain is nothing impressive, we have a mediocre park at best, and pretty much no steeps. If you have some skins though and are willing to hike a bit then there's some super sick stuff back in fish creek canyon which is pretty easily accessible from the resort.

I'm 17 and already pretty ready to get out of here and meet new people and do some new things. If it's something pretty short term though, it's definitely worth a try. I personally just can't see myself living here when I'm older.

Kinda agree on the flat aspect. There are a few fun spots in bounds (Christmas tree bowl area, and pony express), but most of the rest of the mountain is flat.
The park was fun for the afternoon I skied it, but it was kinda small and it might get boring skiing it all season(don't know how often the reset).

I have also spent some time there in the summer. The mountain biking is a lot of fun if you are into that sort of thing. Emerald mountain, trails off rabbit ears pass(continental divide trail), and the steamboat mountain are all a lot of fun for XC style riding. If you are interested in downhill the steamboat bike park is fun, but similar to their park it would get boring riding it all season as there are limited runs.

Steamboat is one of my favorite mountains in CO, and probably my favorite town ever. they get a good amount of snow and its GOOD, light fluffy stuff, some of the best snow you'll find. the terrain is great IF you know where to go. i've got my pow day routine down to where i get mostly untracked snow for a good 3 hours, then move around to my other favorite areas from there. I never thought of the mountain as flat, they have some great steeps, takes a couple minutes of hiking but it accesses some of the best drops and "pow jibbing" terrain around.

the lift served terrain is still good, i wouldnt call it flat, but definitely not as steep as other places. I like it though because its steep enough that you can still build up plenty of speed, but not so steep that your constantly having to speed check and slow up. it allows you to ski super hard and fast.

I could see it being a great place if you do backcountry skiing or have access to a sled, lots of great areas nearby.

the park isnt great, but they do have some pretty fun creative features. if you're looking perfectly sculpted massive jumps to practice your doubles on, its not the place, but if you like to just get creative and fuck around, still hit some pretty good big stuff, its great. the fun factor matches anywhere, the quality and size is where its lacking.

the town atmosphere is awesome, you dont get summit county broh's and their snobby attitude, the people are mostly awesome, the cowboy types keep it from attracting range rover driving hippies from boulder. and the town, especially in the summer, has some of the best mountain biking, hiking, camping, trail running, etc.. in the nation. the yampa river running through town, hot springs, good lakes, etc..

IMO id choose it over pretty much anywhere for a place to live.
