Just went to the bank, theres 1500 more than i should have in my debit account

I should have like only 200 in my debit account right now, but i went to the bank to deposit a check and theres 1700 on my balance. I have no idea how it got there, im guessing some mistake the bank made.

What would you do? Should i withdraw all of it in case the bank made a mistake so that they cant correct it later (ie take my money away)

it has nothing to do with being irresponsible (well, in some cases, sure, but...)

let me assure you plenty of people our have very little money after bills, because theyre working jobs that are stepping stones and don't pay huge amounts in the meantime-- you have to earn your stripes in career jobs most of the time. and living in the city for jobs like that is expensive.

oh, and your saying "ask for more hours" makes me think you have no business talking down to people about their jobs if you get my drift :)



OP: find out where it came from and rectify it immediately. even if you're unethical, DON'T use it, if it was a mistake the bank will absolutely take that amount of money back (and those mistakes do happen)

Don't spend the money for a while. I have heard of this happening before and they can leegally collect on it from you. Not sure exact laws...but dont spend it. Wouldnt be a bad idea taking cash and hiding it for now though.

If you really MUST be a sketchtard about it, pull it and put it in your savings account and just hold it for a minimum of 180 days. 99.9999999% likely that someone will realize that mistake and come looking for it and you ARE LEGALLY OBLIGATED to give it back contrary to what that tiny brain of yours may be telling you in that retarded squirrel voice it has.

We may have numerous banks in the US, but there are 6 that control over $8 billion in assets, so the whole lack of an oligopoly in the banking industry is a complete and utter farce. (I couldn't tell if you were being serious with your comment on that)

I've studied numerous case examples about this exact scenario. In each one, the person got fucked. Funny how all the accountants/financiers in this thread are telling you the same thing, yet you refuse to believe them.

It's not at all uncommon for a bank to make a ledger error. But when they notice the money missing (which they will), they will come looking for it. They are smarter than you.

Im not going to spend it or take it out. I cant get in trouble for leaving it there and seeing what happens. For all i know it got deposited in the wrong acct by my padres, its a joint acct anyways.

When I lived in the US the only thing I could do was see online how much money I had in my account, and even that wasn't normal for most banks. What the...
I have full control over my money and can do money transfers to any account in Europe within 24 hours without a hitch. Within my own country it takes a couple of hours. If it's to another account with my bank it's a couple seconds.
I also have an app on my phone I can do the same things with. Why the US hasn't even come close to this is beyond me.

Maybe it has to do with the tens of thousands of different banks in the US, which I find weird as well. We have maybe 10 tops in the whole country. But then again, it's probably a good idea that there's more banks in the US, because otherwise there would be even more power in the hands of some greedy fucks on wall street. Anyway, I'm going off-topic.

Check where the money came from. Refund that shit if it isn't legit.
