Just went to the bank, theres 1500 more than i should have in my debit account

I should have like only 200 in my debit account right now, but i went to the bank to deposit a check and theres 1700 on my balance. I have no idea how it got there, im guessing some mistake the bank made.

What would you do? Should i withdraw all of it in case the bank made a mistake so that they cant correct it later (ie take my money away)

It is probably one of you parents checks and they accidentally put it in the wrong account. It's happened to me before.

If you have online banking check your account history it should say where it was deposited from. If it was a mistake the bank will catch it. Also if you did your taxes late chances are it could be from that.

I still have my tax refund from the treasury thats 1100 bucks. would they have sent the check if it was direct deposited? Everything considered i must have about 3100 dollars now jesus

one thing is for sure, if it's an error the bank WILL find out. so i guess you need to determine whether or not you want to deal with the possible repercussions of withdrawing all of the money. i'm sure they could find some way to fuck your life up if they want to. i don't know what kind of legal recourse they have, but i'm sure there's something.

this shit happens more often than you'd think just due to the sheer volume of banking transactions that occur each day. depending on where you live, you could be charged with theft if you fail to pay back any mistaken amounts. google that shit.

"According to the district attorney's office in Walworth County, Wis., a man was charged with theft when a check for more than $49,000 was accidentally deposited into his account at Fifth Third Bank. "He was having financial difficulties so he spent it," Walworth County district attorney Phillip Koss says. "When the bank asked for it back, he put them off. But when he was charged with theft he came up with the money."
Besides having to cough up the misappropriated funds, he also paid a $500 fine."

I know a guy that set up his account for transfers and transferred $2600 to his brother. Needless to say the banks put the money in someone else's account. because his brother never got the money and after days of calling the banks to get it rectified they found it was an error on their end someone hit the wrong key when writing the account number when they transferred it. My buddy ended up getting his money back. When he did he took all of his money out of that bank and switched all of his banking to another bank.

HR usually fucks up like that though. so if you have a job, and can see that's where your money comes from then contact your work.

money never pops up just because, so it belongs to someone else. if you spend it, you have to pay it back, so no point in buying hookers just yet.

No sir. After I graduated high school I moved to Texas then up to keystone. Now I'm back in my hometown splitting a place with my girl. Not everyone on ns is irresponsible. I've had multiple jobs but I haven't gone more than 2 weeks unemployed since I was 16.

the good part of me says look into how it got there and return it.

Cost of living is really high for where I live. I live in a apartment with the girlfriend as well but I'm ski in and ski out access at big sky. I'm making more money now than I ever have and its been rough financially moving every 6 months trying to find a place to settle down in. It looks like things are looking better financially more than ever though.

what's wrong with you? My checking account can vary from 7k to 200 I'm a given week depending on what bills are due. Having 200.00 in your account doesn't mean you're poor.

Dont touch it and tell the bank, If you spend it then the bank catches it the will take the same amount from your account and you will be in dept. Same thing happened to me but with 5000 and they took it back after a week or so

I still don't get how most American don't have online banking. It's ridiculous how backwards the system is.
When I lived in the US the only thing I could do was see online how much money I had in my account, and even that wasn't normal for most banks. What the...
I have full control over my money and can do money transfers to any account in Europe within 24 hours without a hitch. Within my own country it takes a couple of hours. If it's to another account with my bank it's a couple seconds.
I also have an app on my phone I can do the same things with. Why the US hasn't even come close to this is beyond me.

Maybe it has to do with the tens of thousands of different banks in the US, which I find weird as well. We have maybe 10 tops in the whole country. But then again, it's probably a good idea that there's more banks in the US, because otherwise there would be even more power in the hands of some greedy fucks on wall street. Anyway, I'm going off-topic.

Check where the money came from. Refund that shit if it isn't legit.

You can do that now with most US banks but some banks will limit the amount of transactions per month.

We may have numerous banks in the US, but there are 6 that control over $8 billion in assets, so the whole lack of an oligopoly in the banking industry is a complete and utter farce. (I couldn't tell if you were being serious with your comment on that)

i had this happen once.
turns out the local walmarts direct deposit account number is very similar to my checking account.

one night i went to take $20 out and had over $100k in my account.

the bank will notice, the bank will take it out eventually.
just leave it and let them straighten it out.
after all, you pay them to maintain your account, not vice versa.
