Best Skiing College

Starting to look at colleges, and probably going to do some visits this year. I know the obvious schools are ones like UVM and CU Boulder because of the club teams, but I'm thinking I could get into better schools academically. Maybe those are good schools, i really don't know much at this point. Any advice from you guys and your experiences would be awesome.

Have you looked at UVM or CU Boulder yet?

But honestly don't know much about UVM but Boulder is a pretty good school if you take advantage.

If youre really concerned with academics Mines is quite prestigious and closer to the slopes than Boulder but you'll probably never get the time to ski...also no b00bs.

CU Boulder is one of the best public universities in Colorado, and Boulder is a really awesome place to live. Its beautiful, lots of public transportation, hiking trails and friendly people that are around your age.
If you're planning on going to a more prestigious school like Mines then expect to go skiing like once a month. School of Mines is extremely academic and you're basically on the outskirts of Denver.
My best friend goes to CU and was in her junior year last winter season and she still had time to come up to ski every week on her days off and can make it to Silverthorne/Frisco in about 1 1/2 hours. Plus there's lots of carpooling on the weekends from Boulder.

I heard CU at Boulder is a BIG party school and nt the best academics if that matters to you. Western Washington I just checked out actually(just the campus and around Bellingham). It's really nice there, I think the academics are good too. They are about 1.5 hours from mt baker, which If you didn't know has the most recorded snowfall in th world.

UVM is a very good school. It's not a cakewalk to get in. Not ivy league or super hard, but still above average. Don't overlook it, it's a great school.

Why not checkout USC and their ski and snowboard team? They're always making some tight videos I always stumble upon on youtube. UVM and UC Boulder are pretty good state schools from my perspective, and being from the east coast, I wouldn't be aware of how much better UCLA is than the other two. According to USNews it's ranked pretty high up there though.

The best skiing college is quit college and be a ski bum. The second best skiing college is University of Utah. Short drive from some of the best lift-accessed terrain and snow on Earth (Snowbird and Alta).

Its funny how this thread seems to be made every year. My short answer is that UC Boulder is too far away from the resorts most people want to ski at (on crowded weekends can take upwards of 2 hours one way) UVM is clearly the best choice for the East Coast but the mountains are in a lower tier than that of the West Coast, and Utah has the best skiing with the most options all within an hour of the two notable schools there (U of U and Westminster) but the education at those schools isnt nearly as good as school of minds.

Maybe look at University of Washigton or something else in Seattle, lotsa good schools there and Crystal/Alpental is super sick

The amount of money your willing to spend on college is super important, UVM isn't cheap to say the least

U of M is in Missoula. Montana State U is in Bozo. I would definitely go to U of M though there's much better skiing and more hippies and drugs.

My brother goes to UVM and he's skis over 60 days a year. its close to stowe, mad river and sugarbush and is a good school too.

Choose your schedule wisely and know when to study your ass off, UNR is a great school for skiing and is becoming a really good school. They're adding 3 new student buildings in the next couple years and everything on campus keeps getting improved. Fall semester is for academics and spring semester is for skiing. I got around 50 days this season between alpine/squaw and boreal. SNC is great for being close but they don't exactly have a diverse education. As far as club teams go SNC shits on UNR and the club at UNR is the hardest to get a hold of (not sure if they even have a freeski team anymore).

that's where i'm going next year. one of the reasons i decided it over CU Boulder is because I hear that the traffic getting up to the mountain at CU sucks. Also it's like 45 minutes up to Baker not an hour and a half.

U of U actually has really good business and engineering departments, the medical departments are pretty damn good too. Its no harvard, but if you want to get an actually useful degree the U is nothing to scoff at

Colby would be an interesting choice. Saddleback Sunday River and Sugarloaf are all close.

Thats definitely a good school if its what youre looking for

Green Mountain College's Killington School of Resort Management is a 3 hear bachelors degree where you don't have to take all the bullshit gen-Ed's, the classes you take will actually help you in the resort and hospitality field plus you earn credits every winter for working at Killington and still get paid which means you graduate with 3 years of experience in your field.


Had 130 days my first year 203 days my second year and 190 this season and started a job at Woodward 2 days after graduation

If you want to ski the rest of you life, are not looking to be a millionaire and can handle a small school The Killington School of Resort Management is the Place to be.

I agree. It is liberal arts based so it has just about everything, so there's a good chance your major is there. It however is also pricey, 55 a year and they don't give much to kids out of state. There ski club takes you to a lot of the major hills and most kids are from Vermont so you could probably get rides to hills easy. The campus is really nice and Burlington is an amazing college town. You can walk into town, but its big enough to have cafes and local music at night. There's two ski shops in town and Burton's headquarters. I got in early action with a 95 gpa and a 29 on the act, 34 in math. The lowest they could offer me was 44 grand a year.

UNR in Reno is really pretty sweet. I know that Reno doesn't have the best image but it is actually a really sweet place to live. My friends and I get around 80+ days a year and are full time students. Great access to Squaw, Alpine, Sugar Bowl, Northstar, and Boreal. Also there are great south lake resorts as well if you want to drive a bit more!

Don't overlook Boston schools. There are a ton of them ranging from average to amazing. mountains are 1:30-2 hours in New Hampshire such as gunstocks, sunapee, and numerous other mountains in the south. Loon and Waterville are more like 2:30 but still drivable

I graduated from Bates in Maine in 2013. It is a good school academically and about 45 or 50 minutes from Sunday River. It's pretty easy to get to and went there at least once a weekend and sometimes twice once football season ended.

Also with your Bates College ID, you get free skiing and Lost Valley Ski Area which is about 5 minutes away in Auburn, ME. It is a little hill with two doubles, but everything is open for night skiing and they have an above average park for the size of the mountain (2/3 jumps of like 20/25 feet and a rail garden). It is really easy to go to after school for a couple of hours and mess around with friends who don't really ski much.

If you are concerned about a good academic school, I would look into the northern NESCAC schools like Bates, Bowdoin, Colby, or Middlebury. I picked Bates because I wanted a good school in New England that I could ski at (and I played some other sports for Bates). I would recommend at least looking into those few because it sounds like they might be what you are looking for. Also, Liam Downey graduated Bates in like 09 and he is the man.

Mount Baker...Bellingham Washington. Not the best academics but the average snowfall makes up for it,and it's very close to Canada and other good local resorts

or if you fuck up in the beginning of your high school career and cant get the grades to get into UVM, you have Champlain..

Champlain has the $30 season pass college deal with sugarbush fyi.

Everyone from CU will tell you it's the best school ever and it's certainly not. To top it off...if you're from out of state it'll cost you a wonderful $40k a year to attend...that's a $100,000+ investment my friend.

A lot of this topic depends on who's paying for what in your college career and how smart you are...aka scholarships. Because there's a big difference between going to a GOOD SCHOOL with skiing nearby, and going to a good school FOR SKIING.

He right. Missoula has a shitty mountain called Snowbowl and any other ski hill is 1+ hour drive. Bozeman is close to Bridger bowl which has super sick backcountry zones and Big Sky (biggest ski hill in America) has a sweet park considering you can ski Moonlight now too.

Hey man, I also grew up skiing in PA. and I just graduated from Bates college where i skied a shit ton

Why Bates is the shit

1. $350 pass to Sugarloaf, Sunday River, and Loon and not far from tuckermans for awesome spring backcountry skiing.

2. Sunday river usually opens late october and sugarloaf usually closes mid may = 6 month season

2. 8 min from lost valley which is small but all Bates students ski for free and has night skiing, a jump line, and a bunch of rails/boxes

3. Super nice and affable people who are also very intelligent and intellectually stimulating to converse with

4. has an amazing reputation academically with great professors and lots of available research and grant opportunities but offers more of a collaberative/chill environment vs. competitive

I fucking loved my four years there and am so sad to leave. I hope you read this because you should at least look into this school

University of Denver. good school, its a bit of a drive but no class for most on fridays so i get three days a week easy. you can get more if you get lucky and stack your classes

Montana State University in Bozeman is the way to go. You got Bridger Bowl 25min away which has great backcountry and expert terrain. Then you have Big Sky which is about an hour away, and big sky is hands down my favorite resort I have ever skied. Has a sick park and great pow days. The powder in Montana is unreal too, they call it the cold smoke. The problem I encountered when looking at CU Boulder was that it was too far from the bigger resorts, I didn't want to drive over an hour.

I have to second UU, UNR and MT-Bozeman. Talking about best skiing town but wanting a prestigious school tells me you're doing it wrong and it's probably about time to call it quits on skiing. Other people are saying drop out of college or don't go entirely is the way to ski which is somewhat true. The key is to go into the right field and make the right connections. You can go to a ski school, graduate and do very well in life.
If you think CU and U-U and all those schools aren't good enough then you should be going 110% towards school and say fuck skiing instead of pissing away a LOT of money to go to a "prestigious" school and trying to find a ski/education balance. Education is only what you make out of it, and if you half ass it by going to an expensive college and trying to ski at the same time, it's going to end badly. Might as well not go entirely, I guarantee you'll have less debt in the long run
