Well done!
I've been using this method for the past few years to repair wonky ski/tour levers on the Marker Duke/Baron for shops across Canada.
The best advice to avoid bending the connecting piece in the first place is to make sure you clear any and all ice from the tracks of the binding before trying to put it back into "alpine mode". Like anything else, don't force it!

just got my barons back from marker for repair of that exact piece after it snapped leaving me to walk over a glacier with a metre of fresh on top for 4 hours for what should have taken about 15minutes.
