Israel begins ground invasion of Gaza

IDF starts Gaza ground invasion By YAAKOV LAPPIN

IDF ground forces began to move into the Gaza Strip on Thursday evening, the prime minister's office confirmed.

The purpose of the operation was to destroy the Gazan terror tunnels leading to Israel, according to a statement released by the prime minister's office.

Prior to the commencement of the ground invasion, the IDF launched a massive wave of combined air and artillery strikes on Thursday night.

The IDF said that the operation will involve infantry, engineering corps, and tank units combined with air force and naval support and intelligence.

Palestinian sources said strikes occurred up and down the Strip, adding that one strike targeted a motorcycle apparently carrying members of a rocket launching cell on their way to an attack on Israel.

At around 10:00 p.m. rocket sirens sounded in the Tel Aviv area, and in the Shfela. Iron Dome made a number of interceptions in the Tel Aviv area.

Hamas bombarded Israel on Thursday with rockets after the end of the humanitarian truce, firing over 100 projectiles after 3 p.m. Eighty one rockets landed in open areas, two fell inside villages, damaging two homes, and 20 were intercepted by the Iron Dome air defense system.

Also on Thursday, a drone from Gaza was detected in Israeli airspace, over the Ashkelon area. The IAF fired a patriot surface-to-air missile at the aircraft, shooting it down. It was the second Hamas drone to be shot down in recent days.

The IDF on Thursday warned citizens of Gaza to evacuate their homes and make their way from less populated areas to the Strip's major cities.

Close to 100,000 leaflets containing the message were dropped over the territory and hundreds of thousands of citizens from all over Gaza received recorded phone messages warning them to vacate villages.

Air raid sirens sounded throughout southern and central areas during the day. Ashkelon and Ashdod were targeted by Hamas repeatedly in the evening, and were successfully defended by Iron Dome.

Iron Dome intercepted two rockets over central Israel and the Sharon district in the evening, and one over the city of Ashdod. Several rockets landed in open areas.

The Gaza-border region of Eshkol came under continuous rocket barrages. Some ten rockets in open areas, and one damaged a home.

Between 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., Hamas fired 40 rockets at Israel, and Iron Dome shot three down Two rockets were fired at Beersheba, with one falling in an open area and a second intercepted over the Negev city.

Within a minute of the ceasefire ending, rockets were fired from Gaza at the Ashkelon industrial area and Hof Ashkelon region. Most fell in open areas.

The humanitarian ceasefire was violated when Hamas fired 3 projectiles at the Eshkol region. The rockets exploded in open areas.

On Thursday morning, one rocket was intercepted over the greater Tel Aviv and Sharon district, and one rocket fell in an open area. In Beersheba, Iron Dome intercepted an incoming Gazan rocket.

So now they are bombing power plants in gaza. Don't really understand how that is supposed to hurt the hamas more than the normal people who don't want anything to do with the war anyway. The humanitarian situation of those people wont really get any better without electricity I guess.

Basic scare tactics. Most of Gaza's electricity is supplied by Israel anyway. It's laughable actually - Israel essentially supplies Gaza with the power Hamas in turn needs to fight Israel

DreddSteveI'm sure that's absolutely true, it's no secret that most of Middle East would like to see Israel wiped off the map. While that is the case, they already have defenses in place for that, in the form of US backing and a nuclear deterrent.

I just don't agree with the scale of the Israeli offensive while claiming they are "defending themselves." How many people got killed by Hamas rockets before the airstrikes started? 1? The Iron Dome has done a damn good job protecting Israel so far. I'm not sure that warrants a full scale ground invasion that has killed over 1,000 people. They could have taken the high road and continued to work through diplomacy, but that has never been the plan. Netanyahu is just as eager as Hamas to have an excuse to shoot at each other.

It'll be interesting to see how long this can go on. Do you think that Palestine will be able to exist in any way in the next 50 years or will Israel eventually force them out?


Hamas will never stop attacking Israel. Are they supposed to just sit back and allow Hamas to keep bombarding them with rockets forever? Hamas will never agree to any sort of diplomacy. Israel accepted the cease fire at the beginning of the month and didn't attack Gaza for six hours. And during that six hours Hamas continued to rain rockets on them. Sadly I don't think there is a diplomacy option between these two parties, other than eliminate all of Hamas' artillery.

Hamas has received ample funds to create a normal civilization for their people. Instead they've spent that money on constructing tunnels into Israel and weaponry. All they care about is fighting Israel. It's because of this that (to answer your question) I don't think Palestine will exist in the next 50 years. That's sad because there are many innocent people that have, and will die as a result. But it's the result of their leaders being unwavering in their pursuit to destroy a country far more powerful than their capabilities. Leaders that those people elected into office. But Israel can't afford to just sit back and block Hamas' missiles all day every day for the rest of eternity.

Yeah, that's very true. It is a pretty bleak situation, I guess I wish that Israel didn't make itself so hard to support. I also wish that the US didn't feel the need to be Israels big brother. We get virtually nothing out of the deal. What good is an ally in the Middle East if all it does is make everyone else there hate us?

I know it's Huffpost, but this article was a good look at both sides from what seems to be a fairly objective viewpoint.

It pretty much made me lose any shred of hope for a peaceful solution in Gaza. Hopefully Fatah can do a better job in the West Bank...jk I just Googled them and their flag is two crossed AKs and a grenade. That bodes well.

Sure there seems to be some bias in this video. But alot of it is truth. The main issue with the conflict is that the Arabs will not accept a state of Israel and live together.

And though we don't know for sure about what he said at the end of the video, where he talked about if Israel stopped fighting one day what would happen next? And if Palestine stopped fighting one day what would happen next? I think there is some truth to the idea that if Israel stopped fighting, their citizens would be dead and country destroyed. Where if Palestine stopped fighting there would be peace.

Also I have been wondering what the number of Hamas leaders/militants that have died. All of the reports just say, most are civilians, but give no numbers on how many exactly versus how many Hamas members.
Yet they are so quick to identify the numbers on the Israeli side. So specifically that they always point out that one was a Taiwanese worker.

I thought I heard or read 80% civilian 20% Hamas somewhere, but can't put a finger on that figure.

Ok I can think everyone can agree that Hamas fucking sucks, but cmon, this invasion is getting way too nasty, Isreal's gotta put on the white gloves or else there's just gonna be thousands of young homeless men jumping at the chance to join Hamas' ranks and retaliate against Isreal.

There already is young men jumping at the chance to join Hamas. That is because the money given to Gaza went to building tunnels and gathering arms rather than putting it to the community and helping the civilians.

The children are raised to hate Israel and kill Jews. So I where I do see how what Israel is currently doing will fuel their hate more, I think if Israel were to do nothing they would still grow up with a desire to destroy Israel and kill its civilians.

Again, if Hamas put down their arms against Israel, there would be peace. If Israel put down their arms, there would be no Israel.

Oh I agree, Isreal shouldn't stop defending themselves, but they can't just bomb Palestine into dust to make the problem go away, history has shown time and time again that that will not work, especially in the Middle east. I admit I have no fucking clue how they could possible rectify this situation, its already so messed up, it seems impossible. I just know this isn't the way to do it, its only gonna make it worse in the long run.

If you go by history, it has shown that when they defend, then back off and have a peace treaty, it gets violated by Gaza and they bomb Israel. So maybe this time they've had enough.

The UN school that was bombed last week, that was a misfire by Hamas.

Also, don't pretend like Israel is innocent here. Even if it is Hamas that starts the conflicts, Israel sure doesn't seem to be showing much remorse for killing a shit load of civilians. If Hamas put down their arms and signed a peace treaty, Israel would go back to their old tactics of building settlements in Palestinian territory which drives people out of their homes. And before you go and say they are legally purchasing all of the land...

Hamas needs to be completely destroyed and all of its leader killed to the last man, no half-measure will work. I know the left sympathizes strongly with the Islamist underdogs, but enough is enough.

Hamas does not care about "Palestine" or "Palestinians", their goal is the exact same as ISIL, to establish an Islamic caliphate. If you believe otherwise you are a fool.

Pretty sure that it was violated before you even posted this...

Hamas says it was Israel that shot first, Israel says it was Hamas. Either way, something happened in one of the tunnels that Israel was going to destroy (allowed in the treaty) and now Hamas has captured a soldier.

Is it just me, or is anyone else not taking these attempted cease-fires by the Israelis and Hamas seriously anymore? Its gotten to the point to where its pretty much a given that they won't last and its really unfortunate. I myself am pretty opinionated when it comes to this conflict. However this conflict has come to a point where our differences should be put aside and we should all agree on the fact that this violence needs to stop. Playing the blame game hasn't gotten us anywhere so far so why continue with it? If we want to see peace than we'll have to put our differences aside and stand together for peace. We can afford to hold off on determining the logistics and politics that must happen to ensure peace in the future. Stoping the violence should be our only priority because theres no way we'll come up with a solution to the problem if it continues. Enough blood has been spilled on both sides and spilling more will only make things worse.

PS - Go watch Vices youtube video about life under Hamas. Palestinians who get caught smoking hash are executed by hanging and if a member of Hamas gets caught smoking than they get shot in the head on the spot. Women that have children out of wedlock have to go to jail for ten years. Yeah, what a wonderful governing body they are. Im sure glad everyone has turned the attention on them rather than the Israelis, cause you know the Israelis totally execute civilians for smoking hash too.

I think its hilarious that opinion is starting to shift a little hamas' way, with people bitching about how aggressive they're being. Can you imagine what the US would do if Mexico planted a bunch of missiles on the border and started launching em at texas/california? Half the mexican population would be whipped out in a matter of days.

I wouldn't be remotely surprised if the number of civilian casualties was horribly misrepresented. Hamas militants dress just like civilians. There's no way to tell the difference between a Hamas operative and a civilian. The fact that Hamas has had no trouble hiding amongst the populace using schools and hospitals to launch rockets and store weapons tells me that a much larger percentage of the populace is Hamas than Palestine would let you believe.

Israel should just bomb Gaza to the oblivion. It worked in Dresden and Nagasaki, it'll work here.

If you were an alien (hypothetically) and you looked in on the world and saw wars being fought and people dying because they believe their mystically, dragon-riding gandalf in the sky was different from another persons mystical, dragon-riding gandalf in the sky, they would probably laugh their asses off. If you were an alien (hypothetically) and you looked in on the world and saw wars being fought and people dying because they believe their mystically, dragon-riding gandalf in the sky was different from another persons mystical, dragon-riding gandalf in the sky, they would probably laugh their asses off. Its ridiculous.


A chunk is over religion, but then a large part of why it's still going on is the continual land grabs by the Israelis over the past 60 years. If they had stuck to the original borders then there's a really good chance none of this would be happening right now at all and Hamas wouldn't exist at all and there would be stable government running things.

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay made the charge this week, declaring that Israel should share its defense capabilities, known as the Iron Shield, with the same Hamas-sponsored terrorists whose missiles it deflects on a regular basis.

The South African official declared that, since Israel has upped its offensive in Gaza, an inquiry launched last week should conclude that it is acting in violation of the Geneva Convention.

She accused Israel, which has pleaded with Palestinian civilians to leave the area to avoid harm, of “deliberate defiance of obligations that international law imposes on Israel.”

Meanwhile, numerous reports indicate that the militants in Gaza are artificially inflating the number of dead civilians in the region by using human shields against Israeli rockets. Nevertheless, Pillay used her authority to lambaste Israel.

“This is why again and again I say we cannot allow impunity,” she said. “We cannot allow this lack of accountability to go on.”
Not satisfied with pillorying the Israeli offensive against surrounding enemies, Pillay also severely criticized the U.S. for providing assistance to the besieged nation.

“They have not only provided the heavy weaponry which is now being used by Israel in Gaza,” she concluded, “but they’ve also provided almost $1 billion in providing the ‘Iron Domes’ to protect the Israelis from rocket attacks.”
She lamented the fact that no similar “protection has been provided to Gazans against the shelling.”

According to Pillay, America has also been derelict in pushing Israel to unilaterally halt its strikes against the Palestinian foes.

“Many of my remarks have been directed to the United States,” she said, “since they are a party with influence over Israel to do much more to stop the killing, to bring the parties to the negotiating table.”

Who else thinks that this lady should go hang out with Hamas buddies for a day or two? If she ever decided to go hang with them than Id recommend to her that she shouldn't extend her visit because her head might become one of their soccer balls if she stays for to long. Then again they might just cut it off right away as well so its really up to her. But she's the one that wants to be friends with Hamas so if they did cut her head off than it'd really be her own damn fault.
