For 5 grand unless your family is in the auto mechanic industry or something similar you really shouldn't look for a "cool" car. Get something reliable. You don't need awd 95% of the time. 5k is barely anything for a car and repairs will add up quick on a wrx, a4, etc anything that costs a lot new. Look for like a cheap civic or corolla.
The used car market is so small now that cash for clunkers got rid of so many. Finding anything the suits your interest for 5 grand is near impossible. Going to have to be really old or need some serious maintenance and repairs.

miata, for 5 grand you can pick up a sick na, they are unbelievable reliable, tons around so parts are cheap, 5 speed, 50-50 weight, lsd, rwd, convertible, and pop up mother fucking headlights! what more could you want?
Umm your not gunna get a GTI or an STI under 5 grand unless its completely fucked. I have a mk5 GTI and love it I'd say use that 5 grand and put a down payment on a GTI.
You won't find a wrx or sti under $5,000. Best go with something like an outback or legacy. If you want something more flashy buy a GTI and make some upgrades too it when you can.
Don't listen to everybody telling you shy away from a GTI because of the price. I bought a MK4 GTI a year and a half ago for $3250 and it's still running really strong with not too much money dumped into it, definitely less than $5k. Along with that, it came with a turbo-back exhaust, stage 2 tune, stage 2 clutch. She is pretty quick and having a turbo'd car is a hell of a lot of fun.

You can find pretty powerful old WRX's with rebuilt motors out there. They'll be a bitch to maintain but if you're looking for a project car then you could have a lot of fun with it.
you def can get your hands on an automatic WRX for 5 g's not standard though, I be willing to say the same about the GTI, you're looking at the very least 7 g's for a drivable standard WRX
If you've only got 5k to drop on a car and you get a VW you'll hate yourself. Toyota, Subaru, or Volvo. Stop caring about style, and focus on getting the lowest miles for your money.
