theabortionatorLol. All the people in this thread are just butt hurt that college is expensive and they owe tons of $$$ for going. I mean what a sick compensation plan to get free travel to a game that will bring in shitloads of $ for the university. That's such a good deal. They don't even have to pay for their uniforms. They have it made.
I'm surprised anybody goes pro early. Big contracts are pretty lame compared to a free gym membership, free food, and getting put up in hotels when traveling to games.

Thizzle.LESS THAN 2% OF COLLEGIATE ATHLETES GO PRO IN THEIR CHOSEN SPORT
THE REST ARE THERE AND PLAYING THEIR GIVEN SPORT SO THEY CAN GET A SCHOLARSHIP TO ATTEND SCHOOL AND GET A DEGREE
QUIT ACTING LIKE COLLEGE DOESN'T MEAN ANYTHING AND DOESN'T HELP ANYONE JUST BECAUSE YOU FIGURED OUT IT WASN'T FOR YOU.
I agree that maybe the D1 football stars should get paid because they are getting beat to hell in the name of their school making money. The rest of the sports? Fuck no. If you played a sport in HS even you would probably understand more. Most college athletes worked their ass off in high school in order to get a scholarship so they could go to college somewhat paid for and get a degree so they can pursue their future. It is probably less than 1% of college athletes that enter college their freshman year expecting to go pro in their sport.
zzzskizzzmost professional sport leagues will not let you go pro, without one or two years of college sports.

theabortionatorI understand that but the people that are going to be bringing in the $ if they get paid are those athletes. Somebody playing ultimate frisbee at some random school shouldn't really be worried about this convo as they won't be getting shit. I'm not arguing that all athletes should get paid, just that the ones that the schools are banking off of.
.MASSHOLE.This. Athletes who play on teams that generate massive amounts of revenue (football, basketball, baseball?, and hockey?) should be given an extremely small portion of the revenue. Obviously this would create further issues as schools like Alabama, A&M, Florida, Florida State, Auburn, etc. would become a further draw for the top players, but there is already talk of an FBS super-division anyway. Who knows what will happen
DiabeetoWhy should they get paid? The school handing D1 athletes full rides along with tutors to do their homework isn't enough? Last time I checked, that alone is worth what some athletes make in the big times.
Plus they aren't amateur status anymore if they start making a living from it. If a D1 athlete wants to bitch about not getting paid, I'm sure the other athletes that he/she beat out for the spot would gladly step up and take a role on the team.
Whether colleges can afford to pay their athletes cash is a whole 'nother argument though.

akimWhy or why not?
thedawg"I did a lot of research and I kept coming back to the same conclusion that none of this makes any sense.
The control over the athletes, the random and selective investigations of USC, Ohio State, and Miami . Then it dawned on me. It's not supposed to make sense. These are all just pieces in a giant illusion. The NCAA is a front.
That's it...
These silly rules and selective investigations serve two purposes: One, it allows them to maintain a monopoly over the billion-dollar industry that is college sports today; and two, it also allows them to maintain their non-profit status...
Once you get past the illusion, you're left with the only thing that matters to them-- their tax-free money.
So lets go over this one time, the NCAA as a whole reports over $700 million in revenue and has $300 million in unrestricted net assets, yet they're a non-profit organization who doesn't pay taxes on any of their money. Where does that money go if not in the pockets of the players who are on the field? Where does ALL that money go? And who gets to decide who's on the committee? Are there elections?
So what we are really left to wonder is what the FUCK is the NCAA, where do they get their authority from, and who are these freaking people?
In short they run college sports...they're in charge of the sports and decisions that get made about college sports...The NCAA is...well theyre the NCAA.........."
casualTop tier college football coaches make millions of dollars. Entire departments (academic), performing art centers, and residence halls are built on the back of high level athletics. We're talking about tv contracts, bowl game pay outs, MERCHANDISE, and even individual players likenesses and jerseys are sold at crazy profits. Explain to me how it's somehow immoral or illegal for Johnny Manziel to sell his autograph? What a fucking joke.
And this dumbass argument about these kids getting "free education" and how they're able to find good jobs.....no, they're not. A white kid from UPenn who played guard? Sure. He probably got a 1450 (old scale) on his SATs and comes from a rock solid nuclear family with nothing but opportunities in front of him. He could've been a glee club or chess club member and landed in the exact same position.
Some CB from Dade County with an accent so thick you and I can't understand him, who was basically admitted into the school on a flimsy technicality, who is told to major in "sports science" or whatever the fuck who is lucky enough to graduate is still going to be a kid from section 8 housing when he leaves college. He isn't going to be any more prepared to function in the real world, but he just might have picked up a lifetime addiction to painpills, or maybe will struggle with post concussive issues. Either way, the point is, he was used as a body for 4-5 years, sucked dry, and unless he is in the top .01%, he will never make a dollar playing that game.
If universities are going to sell a jersey with some kid's number on the back, he should see a cut. If you're university is going to accept millions to broadcast games on a network, why can't a portion of those funds go to a trust for former collegiate athletes who might have lifelong health issues as a result of their career. The NCAA is absolutely fucking broken, and it needs to be addressed. I don't claim to know exactly how student athletes should be compensated, but the fact that they need to be is a no-brainer.
Do people even think about how expensive college actually is? I'm not talking about tuition. I'm talking about fucking food, housing, clothing, books, entertainment, visits home, etc. I almost guarantee that the vast majority of the people on this site who went to school had huge financial backing from their parents. Well, imagine if they didn't or weren't capable of pitching in a single dollar. You are either in class, on a bus, in a hotel, on a practice field, or in a weight room. So....when are you going to work? And let's be real, how many people could honestly balance a real degree program, the equivalent of the workload of a professional athlete, and yet find time to work enough to earn enough money to support themselves?
For a lot of those kids, college sports is basically a crapshoot. It either pans out into a professional career or it doesn't. And, if it doesn't, about the best you can hope for is a job as a trainer or running a gym or something. I know all-americans and am friends with a guy who caught a td in the superbowl. I've heard this conversation and arguments from everyone from current and former players, grad assistants, coaches, and head coaches of big schools, and basically everyone agrees that these kids need to be looked after better somehow someway. If school's are making big money on the backs of KIDS sacrificing their bodies, how could anyone with a straight face suggest they don't deserve a piece of the pie? Again, I don't know that "contracts" or straight up pay to play is the answer, but maybe a reasonable living stipend, not the insulting peanuts most of these kids get now. Scratch that, very few get a dime, and those that get anything, it's not even close to sufficient.
System is fucked and it blows my mind that so many of you think they should "just play their sport and shutup". College football is maybe the most popular sport in the country and is about as lucrative as it gets. The ONLY principal party involved who doesn't make a cent is the player on the field. How could anyone think that's fine? Change the particulars, I mean of college athletics and draw an example in any other aspect of life. Where else in modern civilization is the producer unilaterally frozen out of reaping any of the profits generated on their work? Would you be for that?
The notion that college athletics is pure and "different" is a nice thought and 50 years ago, it was probably true. TImes have changed, and college sports (let's be real. Football and men's basketball) are commodities, and are 100% for profit enterprises. You can't have it both ways and tsk tsk about the glory of amateur sports and the love of the game when it comes to the players, and then sit back and count your stacks of cash as a coach or AD.
hey-dude-its-meits over now, hope we can survive in the upcoming system

theabortionatorThank jebus for some good posts now that this thread got bumped. I was getting tired of seeing a bunch of ignorant or stupidly jealous college kids saying "errrr mah gerrd they like get a full scholarship and I have student loans and that's like not fair so they don't deserve anything more because like I have student loans"
Get over your shit people. If you work during college they should label you as an "amateur" and take away your pay. You still don't get a scholarship though because monetarily you're worthless.
People on here bitch because the prizes sucked at a rail jam they went to, I can't even imagine if you guys were in these kids shoes. A rail jam were all the shit is donated just to hook kids up, and the kids aren't bringing in any real revenue. But somebody is worth millions and get's $0 and isn't allowed to take anything for risk of getting banhammered and that's totally cool because they get a free "education" and probably get a sweet tshirt to remember their college days.
Granite_StateSo college athletes should get paid but kids at say MIT, who discover something new, or create a revolutionizing product, or whatever that also bring in publicity and $$$ to the school shouldn't? I'm game for people getting paid for physicality if the intellectuals that actually contribute something to society get paid too.
.MASSHOLE.Different on so many levels. Poor comparison there. The students who make these discoveries are using school resources and most do not generate anywhere NEAR the revenue the athletes do. And most importantly, they are not sacrificing their health to the same extent some of these athletes are.
Additionally, these discoveries will benefit them later in life. They can put it on a resume, CV, whatever they like. They can get recommendations in similar fields, work as a professor, gain a Ph. D, the list goes on. If you are an athlete, your contribution is limited to on-field performances. For most of these CFB and CBB athletes, once college is over, their sports career is over. Sure, they can put it on a resume, but it does not have the same effect as a scientific discovery.
Granite_StateI would contend that athletes are also using school resources to achieve the performances that they have. And though it may not be equal in revenue, revenue is revenue. Furthermore athletes should know the potential health risks they are taking on by playing a sport, especially a contact one. It's like a race car driver knowing there is a chance he will get in an accident and could be injured or die. And yes, both can be used on a resume, but I think you are underestimating how impressive playing a D1 college sport looks on a resume as well. It shows commitment, teamwork, dedication, hardwork etc. I just think a lot of the posts in this thread are making excuses for these athletes. They know the risks, or should, and if they don't that's on them
.MASSHOLE.I had a feeling you would bring up both using school resources.
The difference is the ROI. Athletes generated hundreds of millions in revenue. A great scientific discovery may generate half that if lucky.
These kids may know the risks, but this also may be the only way they are able to get an education. Many of these kids are willing to risk their most important asset, their body, just to have this education.
Anyway, I don't think you and I will agree on the difference, but that is my stance.
b-kulif a student made some sort of big scientific discovery or great computer application and it is profitable what is to stop them from bringing it to the market themselves? its not like just because it was developed at the school means it is the schools property.
Granite_StateActually you are wrong, it is the schools property in most cases. If an invention is marketed the school will receive just compensation. You use their shit, they own whatever you make. Pretty simple and comparable. If they bring it to the market place without the schools consent the school may choose to file a lawsuit against the student.
"Colleges and universities own the ideas and technologies invented by the people who work for them, including professors and graduate students who are paid to do research. Most universities also own inventions created by students using a significant amount of their resources, even if the inventors are undergraduates like Mr. Zummo and Mr. Naples, both 21."

Lucky.clearly none of you ppl have watched The U, Pony Excess, The Fab Five, ect. most top players already get paychecks from rogue boosters.
.MASSHOLE.Look at what you said there. Then come back and try again.
b-kuldidn't realize that. what about things like Facebook and napster though?
Lucky.shut the fuck up, you do not even know what The U is or Pony Excess, and furthermore you have no clue what a rogue booster is. get the fuck outta here kid
.MASSHOLE.The University of Miami? The drug, sex, and pay for play scandal that stripped them of national titles? Second worst scandal in NCAA CFB history behind SMU or the Pony Express as it nicknamed? Sure. I don't know what that is.
What you FAIL to realize is that rogue boosters only pay the top fucking players, not the entire team. This new format will pay the ENTIRE team.
So GTFO out of here. Go make some more shirts.
Granite_StateCollege athletes know, or should know, they will be generating income for their school. They should not get paid for it. They DO get massive scholarships, they SHOULD be using those scholarships to get an education that will land them a job. They should KNOW that only a slim percentage of people go pro and shouldn't hope they are one of them. There are countless examples of college athletes getting "gifted" cars and all sorts of other toys. They get insane amounts of apparel. No fucking way they should get paid. Coaching is a JOB, playing a sport isn't until you get to the semi-professional/professional level. Thats why coaches get paid and athletes don't.
You are insane if you think these athletes should get a source of income for playing a sport on the collegiate level.
Granite_StateI would contend that athletes are also using school resources to achieve the performances that they have. And though it may not be equal in revenue, revenue is revenue. Granite_StateI agree, we will probably never agree, this seems to be a divided issue.
I'll just say this, not everyone gets to go to college. That's life, it's not fair. If this is the only way some people get to go to school, that's only a positive aspect. They don't have to play, they don't have to take the abuse, and they don't have to go to college. It's a conscious decision they have to make and they know what the potential outcomes are.
Shit I almost couldn't attend my junior year (this year)because I couldn't get a student loan with my mother (fortunately my father will be able to cosign one for me, I'm still waiting). I would kill to have the opportunities these kids have, and asking for MORE MONEY, on top of what a full scholarship would give me, just seems greedy and ridiculous to me. Even knowing I'm making the school money, even knowing my body may get broken, that's part of the deal. I'm getting a FREE education from a D1 school.
Life has risks and trade offs. You have to make decisions and weigh your options. And most importantly, life isn't fair. Some people can afford school, some are smart enough to get an education for free, and some are physically gifted enough to get an education for free. There are trade offs with every single one of those scenarios. The sad fact is even more kids can't go to college because of money or genetics or where they were brought up. Take what you're given and don't complain.
hey-dude-its-megranite state is consistently one of the dumbest people on here. the kind of dumb where they dont even realize their limitations
Granite_StateWord homie. You aren't too bright yourself.
Granite_StateAlso when you type "ur" instead of your or you're you sound like a fucking chode. Just letting you know, bro.
Lucky.clearly none of you ppl have watched The U, Pony Excess, The Fab Five, ect. most top players already get paychecks from rogue boosters.
Granite_StateI don't think those were actually associated with the schools. Like Mark Zuckerberg wasn't working with Harvard to develop Facebook, he did that on his own time. I think Napster is kinda the same deal.
Lucky.yeah this is why you never go full retard, you obviously do not know what i am talking about so you googles some bullshit. FYI The U was never stripped of any national titles, JACKASS.
