Any Engineers out there

Going to be a senior in highschool and thinking about engineering. Im currently writing my apps for Boulder, UW madison, Montana State, N. Michigan, and possibly U of U. I didn't do too hot on my AB Calc Ap test, but got decent grades both semesters. Im also taking BC next year, along with AP physics, i took the honors physics class this year.. Anyone in the field/older have any experience with grades in relation to success in college. I enjoy engineering but I feel like I dont have the grades/scores.

I'm currently in engineering school now, still have a year to go. Before getting into engineering school I didn't have great grades but they weren't bad either.

The first year was kind of hard and I failed some classes but after that I figured out how to study in a better way and now I have some great grades without studying more.

All that to say that grades you have before don't mean a whole lot, what is important is that you are motivated and know that you will have to do a lot of work, do it because you find engineering interesting!

haha I might as well be. But I seriously just love my school and considering I was EXTREMELY close to not coming here because of the mormon situation, I don't like seeing people turning it up simply due to that reason.

I recently graduated from CU Boulder with a civil engineering degree. It was pretty easy for me to get a job in the Denver area and most of my classmates also got them (at least if you go construction management route). I loved CU and would recommend it for anyone, it is such a fun place to spend 4 years. Only drawback is that it really isn't that close to skiing, but it's still awesome.

As far as whether or not you want to go engineering, I would recommend at least applying to the engineering school within the universities that you apply to. I too was on the fence coming out of high school and wasn't sure if I wanted to do engineering so I applied as an open option engineering student. Do this instead of applying open option arts and sciences. It is much easier to get out of the engineering school than into it once you are actually a student.

Civil is probably the easiest or one of the easiest engineering disciplines, and I liked it a lot. You would have really busy weeks from time to time, but you still had enough free time to party and have fun as much as you should in my opinion. The first two years will be heavy math classes that are pretty difficult and are often the "weed out" classes. After those, you will start getting into more focused classes which are usually more enjoyable. Overall, I'd say if your on the fence, apply for open option engineering, try it for a semester, and if you don't like it, switch out and you will probably already have almost all of your math/science requirements for the rest of college out of the way if you go into something like arts and sciences.

I'm going to be a Sophomore next year aiming for my Mechanical or Electrical Engineering degree. Like it's already been said if you have a personal desire to be an engineer then you should be fine. It's a ton of work, and really hard but worth it in the end.

In my experience grades only matter if you're trying to get into a place like Harvard and for Scholarships. Don't slack off though, cause a .1 difference in your GPA could potentially mean around 10-20k after four years in terms of scholarships.

I'm also only in my second year of college so I haven't dealt with upper division classes or Pro-school. Pro-school is college you go to within a university for your major. Since I'm going into either Mechanical or Electrical Engineering I need to take classes that fulfill the requirements to get in. This could be another place where grades potentially matter depending on how competitive the school you're going to is.

Graduated from Montana State in mechanical engineering a couple years ago. I highly recommend the school. It's a great balance of skiing and school, and it's easy to get accepted as well if you are worried about that.

My point being that a lot of kids think they're going to be sitting on autodesk all day playing around in inventor extruding shit when there is a ton more work then just the design process, such as: proposals, gantt charts, material cost estimates/procurement, load calcs, energy transfers, site visits, consumer consultations, constantly updating your portfolio and redundant amounts of paperwork


Not all engineers are subject to that sort of work (just as toast said) but from personal experience I can say the design process is only a fraction of the real work

I would argue that this is the design process, minus the portfolio and paperwork. Most of those things are what spark iteration. It's also not something that every engineer has to do. Maybe the project manager...

I agree that the "formal" design process is way less interesting than "aha" moments, and it's true that it usually takes forever to get anything done. But generalizing that makes a lot of assumptions about organization size and structure that aren't necessarily generalizable IMO.

yeah if you're in a management job. there obviously has to be someone to sit and extrude all that shit, not every engineer sits doing gantt flow charts and all that shit all day every day, thats a very narrow generalisation

Truth! I'm an engineer and while I enjoyed it, it wasn't easy for me. Shoulda done business but I ended up doing something that challenged me and I still enjoyed what I learned. I'll pair it with a MBA in the future and that should set me up decently well for what I'd like to do.

can attest to this. i spend more time in excel than i do in any autodesk software at the moment.

I would say that the thing with engineering isn't how difficult the math is, or even a lot of the scientific concepts. Its the application and problem solving that is difficult. Engineering is extremely rewarding in terms of applying many different concepts to solve one problem, whereas hard science will further your understanding of specialized concepts. Both are difficult and rewarding but (to some extent) in different ways.

I know this bump might be pointless now, but anyways... I have to say I don't agree with a lot of stuff on this page. From my experience, people aren't socially awkward any more than other faculties (meaning that the percentage of weird, awkward kids is the same). And yes, it is hard, and probably harder than most other faculties (but that all depends).

Overall I'd say that in terms of having fun at university/college it is pretty much the same as any other faculty, and it also seems like it's the best for getting a job after you graduate. BUT you have to be interested in doing a ton of math and physics, and try to know if being an engineer is really what you want for the rest of your life.

i feel like i can give a bit of insight on this. i am a second year mechanical engineering student at ualberta and to answer your question simply, highschool marks really do not matter all that much. everything you learn in highschool isnt all that relevant or you will relearn in n time anyway. especially in your first year chemistry classes, you will learn that everything in highschool wasnt actually 100% accurate. it really all boils down to work ethic and how you learn. i was class valadictorian and won governor generals award in highschool and only finished with a 3.2 and i even have friends that got mid to high 90s in highschool that failed out. but on the flip side i have friends who barely squeeked into the faculty but were on the deans list after first year. you just have to commit yourself (im one of those people who teaches themself everything the night before the midterm).
i really do recomend it though if that's really what you want to do. for the hard work its really rewarding and if you get into the specialty you want its pretty damn cool (maybe im just a nerd). as said before though, prepare for a few duds and really socially awkward people and some people that are actually just really stupid (i cant stand international students here) but find the right group and they're all absolute beauties. plus we drink with the best of them. hope this helps

In my experience, large companies will have the engineering technicians (2-3 year college diploma, not an engineering degree) do the CAD component while the P.Eng folks do the actual design. The P Eng will know how to CAD but is hired to sign off on designs etc, not do the bitch work of drawing it all up

A 4 year engineering program taught me that being an engineer would be fucking awful.

Actually college in general taught me that most jobs suck balls and I either need to have an exciting one or accept that I'm going to be poor.

hahaha this, im in my fourth year of engineering, had a student job in a real engineering workplace for 2 summers and man fuck that. im gonna neeed a year or two before i can commit myself to live in a cubicle again. im sure ill get to a point in my life where im okay with that but right now im at the height of my restlessness and an entry level engineering job, being a CAD bitch in a cubicle farm is not what i wanna be doing right now.

It gets old pretty damn fast. Designing and creating the 3D parts isn't bad but dimensioning is really boring. That being said I would much rather do that than plant or HVAC layouts. Hopefully I can stick with the machine design path.

Should've been a civil engineer. I spend probably about 75% of my time in the field during the summer months. I realize that this will diminish somewhat once I'm a PE, but I'll probably still be able to do 25-50% out of office in the summer from what I've seen. This summer we had a GIS project where we had to shoot a bunch of survey monuments and I spent about 6 weeks ripping around various Indian Reservations in Montana on a four wheeler with a bunch of GPS units for 12-14 hours a day (and I'm hourly so I was getting OT). It was basically a paid scavenger hunt, probably the most fun I've ever had at work. Oh, and my company says I can work part time in the winter if I want to so I can ski pretty much as much as I want.

my job actually didnt include much CAD work, but I have done enough of it in school to know that I wouldnt enjoy it. being in that work environment, cadding stuff, is definitely not my thing. If it sounds enjoyable to you then thats awesome because you will have no problem going through that part of your career (should you choose to do so).

Sounds like you have landed a pretty awesome set up. cant say its entirely due to you being a civil major though because obviously there are a lot of jobs in civil engg that are boring, indoor desk jobs. yours sounds rad though. I am in mechanical, and its definitely interesting to me, I would just want a more hands-on job like yours though. at least for the first little while, as I ease into real life haha

Sitting for 8 hours a day blows. Starts to hurt your neck or back, even when you think you're sitting straight up. Besides that my job is really chill...

I'm an engineer for Kapsch. We do toll systems, aka EZ-Pass.

I personally love my job.

Go for engineering, the worst case is you change majors. Best case is you get to make/design things that people use everyday.

i have a civil engineering degree but went into project management for a concrete sub. the work constantly changes for me so it's not the same thing day in and day out and it's a good balance between office time and field time. i can basically schedule when i want to be in the office or not

The previous posts are more or less on point. I am working on my PhD in Geotechnical Engineering (see dirt engineering) and it isn't too harsh. Math-wise (in terms of upper level calc and such).. the difficulty fades pretty hard past most of your Freshman and Sophomore courses. Once you get into true engineering courses (Junior and Senior) the math is simple.. the concepts are more difficult.

Honestly, I think the ones who are more successful in engineering are those who get slightly worse grades but actually have a passion to continue as opposed to people who got AAA's but didn't really give a shit. So if you really want it, go for it.

Also, just another heads up.. there will be plenty of time to ski while schooling in engineering. Last season was my 3rd year in the PhD program and I still swung 76 days (CU Boulder).

One thing that turned me off about Montana State (call me shallow but its true) is that during my campus tour I saw approximately 0 females that I would consider having any sort of relationship with. They offered me lots of money and I know it's a good school/close to skiing etc. but the thought of not being able to interact with attractive female coeds was a no go.

That being said if you want to meet some babes, ski and party your ass off all while being an engineer, come to the U. I'm a senior in the Chemical Engineering program and yes, while I am only taking gen eds this semester, my last semester of Junior year, arguably the most difficult semester, I was averaging 3-4 ski days a week.

Been thinking about it for a while, my buddy is going through his 2nd year and bridge program to uni and says it is difficult but you don't have to be a super genius.

The hard part is the dedication to the schoolwork, it's all about the effort you put in not your natural intelligence. I mean that helps but that's beside the point. He said basically he spent all day at school, went home and did homework or did homework with his school friends. He also said having people to study and do homework with outside of school helped tremendously.

I'm going to enrol in 2 years, I have to get skiing while young out of the way first.

the real world is not like that. im a mechanical engineer and i can tell you engineering managers who don't have a solid technical degree and some technical experience suck. and over the last few months i have done like a week total of technical calculation stuff. in the real world there is much more to mechanical engineering than pencil pushing and number crunching.

juicedrummer11the real world is not like that. im a mechanical engineer and i can tell you engineering managers who don't have a solid technical degree and some technical experience suck. and over the last few months i have done like a week total of technical calculation stuff. in the real world there is much more to mechanical engineering than pencil pushing and number crunching.


I wasn't considering a direct move to management. I was thinking of working for a few years as a technical engineer and then moving into management once I get a good feel for what it's like to be on the technical side. I just couldn't imagine myself doing that for the rest of my career. What exactly do you do other than technical calculations, if you don't mind sharing?

Why in the world would you even consider Northern Michigan? It's a terrible school academically and the winters are colder than sticking a popsicle up your butt.
