What camera should I get?

Yeah, I looked around for this thread. Found one on video cameras, if there is a different one, please point me towards it.

So I don't have much of a set budget right now, I would like to buy everything cheap, and will buy stuff that is practical online or craigslist used

Anyways...
I know absolutely nothing about cameras.. But I really want to get into action sports photography(mtb, skiing, skating, etc.) And then a camera that could do some film(but better photography obviously) would be nice.

Anyway, get nutz's camera. It's pretty much perfect for what you want and you get way more for your money than buying new. $700 with the fisheye (you want the fisheye), it's a perfect package.

But I remembered that we have a good family friend who is pretty high up with bestbuy, so I could probably get around a 50% discount on cameras on bestbuy

Canon should stop giving their budget line-up a different name in the states and Japan and just stick to the nomenclature they use for their entire product range.

That is the 1100D, not a bad camera but it's made from Kinder Egg plastics and roughly the size of a body cap with tumerous growth it feels unbalanced with slightly larger lenses the the kit lens and unless you are pixie sized is not a nice grip.

Just get a T2i, T3i, T4i, etc... It has all you need and want, spend the money you save over the 60D on some glass like the Nifty Fifty, glass > body's anyway.

Or get the dirt cheap Eos M from eBay with an adapter.

Don't get the 60D, I use it and I wouldn't get it now because it's outdated and is pretty shit above 1600 iso. That said, it doesn't take bad photos at all, but some of it's features are just annoying (for example the hard stop on the mode select wheel, means you have to go the long way round to switch between movie and manual), but it's not worth as much as they charge for it.

Don't waste your money on extra ef-s lenses other than the basic kit lens, they're some of the worst built lenses that are made these days and they won't work on either a full frame dslr or a film slr if you want to experiment with #artz.

T3i is normally the best of them, pretty much only because of the flippy screen but I think another of the rebels might have that now (I haven't looked at the canon line for a while now).

I wouldn't buy from best buy either, just like I wouldn't buy a mercedes from wall mart. If you get a discount by all means, but research cameras on a better website that actually gives you all the information (bhphotovideo.com).

Also beware of package deals, manufacturers like to throw in things like tripods and filters and extra SD cards etc for what is apparently a good price. Often they're just pawning off shit, the tripods they give you are normally worth ~$20 and will break within a year if your lucky. Filters will have casts/dramatically reduce sharpness etc...

I hate to beat a dead horse, but if you want top-notch image quality without paying thousands of dollars, your best bet is to pick up a Canon AE-1 for $50-$80. Spend the rest of your money on stuff that actually contributes to better photos: things that exist outside of the camera.

since you're looking at around the $1000 mark, here's what I'd do. I'd probably try and get this all second hand though, buying new stuff is just another way to pay too much...

T3i with basic kit lens ($550)

The old Tokina 11-16 f2.8 (aka 'the newschoolers lens', $450)

For $1000 you could have a t3i, which is probably the most used camera on NS, and a lens that is absolutely perfect for photographing and filming action sports. Yeah this kit is a bit old, but it's not like it doesn't still take awesome photos and really good video.

Also, buy from a legit camera store (b&h, adorama etc). If anything goes wrong they'll actually help you, they actually know they're shit. Most 'camera techs' in general electronic stores don't know what aperture is.



Landis, why would anyone learn photography on an ae-1? I know it's cheaper and everything, but I wouldn't want to learn on a film camera.

If he's doing mostly photos and portraits especially, I don't think I'd grab the 11-16, maybe a prime or two and a long zoom?

You learn faster when there's consequence.

Digital is great for learning the fundamentals (aperture, shutter, iso, etc.), but in terms of refining your photographic eye, digital is a flawed format (psychologically speaking) because there's no incentive to stop and think "maybe this isn't worth taking a photo of - why? How can I make it worth photographing?"

The kit with the 18-55 and 75-300 would be good for you. I'm not trying to offend anyone here, but I notice that a lot of member are very quick to tell people starting out to spend a shit ton of money on way too much and too nice stuff - but that's my opinion.

I admit I'm just frugal with my money - I certainly don't mind buying the lesser quality item for less money if I'm not certain I need the better one, so that's what I like to advise. A good reason to follow my frugality in photography is kinda like iiii or whatever the hell his name is said about film cameras: when your equipment is limited, you learn to make due with what you have which in turn makes you better with your camera. So, I'd recommend waiting on buying the 11-16 until you feel you need it if I were you.

Landis is right about how much faster you learn on film cameras. However it's frustrating as fun, and you could have a half decent 35m setup for $20 anyway... Also I can't imagine you're awash with processing options in AK, particularly for b/w and slide film.

I can't see too many situations where a telephoto would come in use. They're often used as cheats,. Zooming in a long way =/= getting closer, and you'll get a better image if you walk closer in. We like the tokina a lot because it's a zoom that behaves like a prime (a lens they doesn't zoom at all, generally are optically better and encourage the photographer not to be lazy) - you still have to walk around a lot and think about framing. I suggested it because I have a feeling Matt'll be taking a fair number of photos down the side or bike tracks, where it can get pretty claustrophobic, and you want to be able to get in close enough for the rider to fill the frame and to still see the environment. Same applies to skiing etc. It applies to skateboarding as well, but skater logic is weird and they prefer technically inferior things like fisheyes (and vx's).

What the hell... 70/80-200's are probably THE best lens for shooting action sports. Unless you like standing on the knuckle for every shot and having the skier/rider be a little speck in the sky and vast barren wastelands of deck be the subject of your photo.

Exactly what I was thinking. So guys...

I need to know by tomorrow what lens I want to get on that t3i. Stock 18-200(which I actually really like, I got the chance to try) or something else?

I have the Sony Rx100 and have been very impressed, the image quality from it has been very good,video is also brilliant, the size is tiny and easily pocketable.
