I get it to an extent, yet his desktop background is changed, huge GER flag hanging over the wall in front of him, and a GER jersey to work. I get it if a Mexican does it, or maybe someone from JAP, KOR, etc. If you can speak the language, I give you free reign to support your 'heritage'.

i have always rooted for france because of heritage/family still living in france/me being very french. but i live in america. america has never been all that accepting of soccer so iv always enjoyed rooting for a country where there are actually real fans.
america has also never really been that great in footbal, iv always rooted for the USA in the world cup but temper my expectations as i know soccer pretty well and am not going to be blindly patriotic and expect the US to go win the world cup with no real world class talent outside of howard and dempsey.

I thought you meant like rooting for the country you're living in currently...Like I was in Argentina for the last world cup and I'm in England for this one...I'm not too bothered by soccer but I did cheer for Argentina and wish they would have beaten Germany when I was there. But I would never cheer for England here. Seeing how gutted people were after the loss to Uruguay was hilarious.

So I should support a country where people automatically assume that since I am German and that my parents/grandparents support the Nazi party? I guess I can do that. It's not like my great-grandfather was killed in Mauthausen or great-uncle was killed while working in a field hospital saving both American and German soldiers.
I have no resentment towards America, nor do I want to see them lose. But if I had to chose a team to support it would be Germany because of my familial history AND they play a much more attractive brand of soccer.

The idea that you actually hold a cultural link to your ancestors from hundreds of years ago was relevant 200 years ago. You are an American. You might have German ancestors, and some of those ancestor's customs may still be a part of your life, but you are not a German. Germany doesn't want you as a German. Regardless of any countries past, after hundreds of years of assimilation, any real aspect of German culture isn't going to be left.
I've probably experienced MORE of the German culture than you even have, unless you've been there too, but even if you did go there you wouldn't be seen as a local. You're a tourist, a foreigner, an American. And for me that's kind of the benchmark test for whether or not you are a real part of the culture or just another American wannabe who feels the need to be even more special because of their heritage.
If you can go to a country, or culture, and immediately understand and be an accepted as a part of most of that culture, even if you were born in America, you would have a real stake in that country. If not, why are you trying to pretend you do?

You may think you have experienced more, but I have lived with aspects of German culture my entire life. That is indisputable. Everything we do, be it the manner in which we eat, the food we eat, the way we dress, how we address our parents and grandparents, etc. is comes from German cultural norms.
The only reason I am not a German citizen is because my mother had to chose between Canadian and German citizenship for herself. She was living in Canada at the time, and the Germans would not allow dual citizenship, leaving her with Canadian citizenship as the only option. Subsequently, as German nationalization laws went at my time of birth, since she was not a "German citizen" we (my brother and sister) were unable to become one as well. Regardless, the Germans would not have allowed us to wield three citizenships (Canadian, German, and American).
There isn't a specific point that it dies it, but I would say that's when you can use my "tourist test". If a German saw you and identified you based on your words and actions as an Canadian, the link to being a part of German culture is over.

Honestly, in today's society, no. You're coat of arms has no real meaning. It can, and probably should matter, to your family as a valuable item, but no one else cares. Coat of arms used to actually hold cultural significance; things like seals were actual security measures. Our culture is long past them being relevant outside of your own family. And your extended family is probably German seeing as they live in Germany. You don't, and you never did.

if you hold a passport to the country, you can go for them.
I live in the US but support France. Reason being...French half of my family got me into the sport when I was very little, and so everything I learned about it came from the French viewpoint. And when I was over there, the team was everywhere so it became easy to follow. In the US at the time, most people didn't even know we had a team.
Ironically I was born in the US, New York City to be exact. I just have the ability to hold Canadian and American passports.
Your "citizen" test is a a horrible test to be honest. You could meet any English-speaking person and would have trouble deciphering where they are from. Think of modern America. The US is a blending of cultures, and it is impossible to decipher who is from where, what their native language is, what their nationality is, etc. To say a language and the ability to "fit in" makes you a part of that culture is a horrible test criteria. I know multiple American Citizens, who by your definition, would not be considered "American".
By you rational, if you live somewhere long enough you can be assimilated into that culture. What about these cases? My grandparents were born in Germany, they gave up citizenship when they went to Canada and now hold a Canadian passport. They lived in Canada longer than they did in Germany. Does that not allow them to identify with Germany anymore? My mother is now an American and Canadian citizenship but has lived longer in the US than Canada. Is she no longer allowed to identify with Canada?
Regardless, your comments and rational won't stop me from identifying as German and supporting the German team over the United States, which was the original point of this thread.

Nope. I recall my first WC viewing experience being the 2002 WC when Germany played the US and beat them 1-0 and my initial reaction was happiness. My parents and grandparents were both cheering for that team, so why should I as a 10 year old do anything different? Its the same reason I started supporting Real Madrid, my family introduced me to the team and I followed them as a result. Did I know at the time RM was Champions of Europe? No way. I couldn't even name a squad member but what I did know is that my family supported them so I decided to as well.
