That's pretty cool that they're respecting privacy like that, but all in all it doesn't do much for anyone who's not dealing drugs. If you're into enough shit that the government wants to look at your phone, they've already done so.


I thought the comment on how phones were like an important part of human anatomy was pretty funny and slightly alarming.

Well people should roll like that in general but that isn't the point. It's nice to see at least some tiny bit of freedom upheld by the supreme court.

And I agree with a post above that if they really want you're information they can get it anyway but at least on the basic level there's kind of sort of some freedom in america.

Just because you have nothing to hide doesn't mean you want people going through your shit.

I totally agree with you and like you said, if they want the information, they'll get it any way they can and we'd never know about it.

I was going to canada last summer with a girl I had never met and another kid I know. Told them to delete anything dumb off their phones. Off course they didn't and we got held/searched extra hard at the border.

Oh sweet! You have all these pics of you smoking joints! You much be the coolest girl in your junior high.

SO much hate. Both the fact that I warned her and that she had a bunch of sick pictures of "Look at me I'm smoking drugs I'm kewl"

eh, the "you shouldn't mind if you have nothing to hide" excuse is getting old. It makes perfect sense in theory, but the fact of the matter is that people don't like searching their shit no matter what.

I can only imagine it will be fairly easy for cops to get warrants to search people's phones. One of the examples in OP's article was that a guy was arrested for illegal gun possession after being pulled over for an expired auto registration and after his phone records were searched, he was tied to being in a gang and a murder. No shit... didn't see that coming!

My point is that cops will search people's phones who deserve it, whether they need a warrant or not. They probably won't be searching your phone or mine. Adding the warrant just gives you and me a little peace of mind that makes that probably a definitely.

That's one step in the right direction. I recently watched the movie "terms and conditions may apply" it's a pretty good movie and went over this sort of thing. It's nice to see people concerned about freedom and privacy.

Ahh, the old nothing-to-hide argument. It's not as narrow and black and white as you're making it out to be; privacy is obviously the issue here, if you somehow missed that

has anyone seen the articles about NJ schools searching cell phones for SEXTing.
also several years ago in my lower level History classes the teacher used to search phones when people were suspected of cheating.

Yeah but if you ever do, it's on there forever. You can get a new phone, new provider, dump your old phone, but the phone company's keep records for 3 years. Also they pretty much do whatever they want with it once it is in their possession.


Source: Someone close to me was arrested with qp of weed oz of shrooms and was already under suspicion of drug dealing by state patrol. His phone was left in the car when impounded, and so it was collected as evidence. The next day they were trying to log in to his Facebook via his phone, and then proceeded to tell him that they were contacting Verizon to "data dump" his phone for every data transfer for the last three years on it. I believe they got a warrant to do that though.

People always talk about how free we are. They talk about making other countries free with our imperialism. At the same time we can't even keep freedoms in the good old US of A.

Much of America is too ignorant to help keep them. And wearing a red white and blue tshirt, having 86 flags on your property and chanting U-S-A at the bar isn't going to change that.

The 4th will be here soon so we can sit around and stroke ourselves while listening to country songs about how great and free we are.

The history of the US, in that respect, is actually quite fascinating. You can pretty accurately trace back this whole false patriotism and American exceptionalism thing to around the time of the war of 1812. I wrote something on this a while ago, I'll see if I can find it. Samuel Johnson's 'The Patriot' is one to check out on this topic
