Turd__AuthorityGod I love small town medicine, especially from one of Ohio's most addiction prevalent counties. My mom calls today and says her doctor put her on a medication for anxiety. I ask what it was..... Oh nothing, just some scheduled benzos. Bruhhhhhhh Bruhhhhhhh you don't do that. Definitely not. Yes can take as needed but not scheduled. Really shouldn't even take as needed first line, not without trying any other medication first. This is how addiction to prescription meds happens folks.
I respect what small town/rural area hospitals do when it comes to the fact that the nursing staff/ER techs are doing way more within their scopes and beyond due to having no MD/Resident/Attending staff or access to resources that you see at Level 1 centers, but a lot of the time they just get transferred to an actual city hospital or an education/univeristy-based hospital. We get a ton of Airmed/LifeFlight patients from WY/NV/ID due to this. We're talking like Nurses and Techs having to intubate, cut open chests, etc., gnarly shit you normally see a resident do.
But the drug/mental health crisis going on in every community and especially larger areas like cities/metro areas has got to be addressed by our leaders, democrat or republican. Salt Lake is a fucking cesspool currently. Some of these people have no where to go besides the ER for free food, drugs, and somewhere to sleep only to be kicked out the next day only to return the week after, or to a shelter/encampment/free shoot-up facility to exacerbate their issues even more. It's all so super fucked up but having empathy helps I guess, though its hard to do sometimes. I guess its better than three hots and a cot in jail...
A lot of these people are genuinely nice folk who went down a wrong path and realize that and good on them for trying to get clean. But it feels like our system is setup just to keep people addicted and the drugs flowing with no real help besides waiting around for days/weeks for a room at a proper mental health care facility, and a lack of sober living setups/proper rehabs doesn't help either. It's all taxpayer-funded too, these issues. I fucking hate seeing safe shootup spots and safehavens for encampments because its just not fixing the issues or addressing them at all. Idk what to do but there needs to be harder foots being down to address mental health and drug addiction in the US.
But I do have to be a bit honest. Some of these people are so fucking gone into their minds that who knows what will fix them. Guys like smearing shit all over the walls of their seclusion rooms, assaulting nurses/doctors/staff, trying to kill other people on the bus or transit services, just wild shit all over. People laugh at Portland and Seattle for being fucked up when it's happening in their own cities as they speak. Rome is burning folks!
