BrandoComandoI'm experiencing some first-world ski problems rn. Don't bother reading unless you wanna hear some mild family drama.

My family made plans to drive up from Sac to Kirkwood for a week-long ski trip after Christmas. Coming up Monday, going home Sunday. They wanna spend time with me doing an activity that they know I enjoy. I'm grateful for that. I know it's outside of their comfort zone. The weather has other plans.

Mom is a fairweather skier only. She doesn't handle cold/wet conditions well and can't figure out how to use goggles and glasses without them fogging up. I've tried everything and she's too stubborn to get contacts. Bluebird days are the only solution. She sticks to her greens.

Younger siblings have skied maybe 5-10 days max. They're stuck to greens and some blues. NBD, I'm happy to cruise groomers with em.

Dad doesn't ski. He was hoping to do some ice fishing instead.

I figure if there's a bad day or two of weather, that's fine. We'll hang out at the condo and play games and do puzzles and stuff. We'll make the most of the sunny days. Tahoe rarely dumps for more than a day or two at a time, right?

Wrong. Tahoe is on one right now. The forecast is showing another atmospheric river (3rd this month), with multiple storms right behind it. The worst part is it's likely a warm storm, so it'll be a mix of rain/slush/cakey snow. I'm expecting lift closures, road closures, soaked everything, the whole deal. I don't mind skiing in these conditions, but my fam will be miserable. It doesn't appear to let up at any time during the trip. I don't think they'll even be able to drive their minivan home on Sunday with the hwy 88 road conditions.

All I can imagine is a week of misery. Maybe a day or two of soaking-wet skiing and lots of complaining. I'm trying to convince my mom this is a bad idea and they should cancel while they still can. The Christmas storm in Tahoe was a shitshow last year and it'll be no different this year. Sunk cost isn't an excuse to keep the trip because the company my dad works for owns the condo they're staying at. It's an employee perk that he gets for free. Just cancel the condo reservation and just save the epic day passes for a weekend later this season when the weather cooperates. Northstar is closer anyways and a better hill for their skill levels.

Now she's all sad that I want to cancel our trip because she "never gets to see me anymore. I just want a family trip where we can all be together" blah blah blah. Like chill, I'm coming down for Christmas already. Don't be dramatic. I see you guys all the time. You guys literally won't be able to do anything on this "vacation" because the weather is too bad.

TLDR - Snow getting in the way of a family ski trip. Mom's feelings get hurt when I recommend canceling. I hate Christmas family drama.

oldmanskiFrom my experience, best to cancel. Years back my family and I had a similar situation at Targhee and it was miserable. I enjoyed it of course but others disliked every minute of it. The snow was good but visibility was super poor, others complained and complained. Skied 4 runs and called it quits, complete waste really. Sucks mother nature doesnt always agree with our own personal schedules but if you can avoid the family drama, do it.

My take: if you're out walking in winter weather, you should be able to walk regardless of if the sidewalk is shoveled. So many old geezers complain about this on next door. Otherwise, stay inside.

There's also a bad rumor that if you shovel your sidewalk it makes you liable if someone slips and falls (not true) - perhaps why they didn't shovel it.

piss_boyi have no idea what’s going on but i woke up with a migraine and was sore and nauseous. I started sweating a whole lot out of nowhere and everything was blurry for a minute or two then it stopped

WoFlowzmy dad has tupac and nas playing on one floors sonos and it’s competing with his jimmy buffett and bob marley on the other floors. everytime he walks up or down the stairs to a different floor he turns it up so he can hear it over the other one. It’s getting so damn annoying. The competing sounds are giving me such a bad head ache

OregonDeadvibes. It will get better but I know it must be rough. pain after surgery was no fun for me . I’m a big coffee drinker so I remember sometimes that would help. Up all night and then brew a strong cup when it gets to whatever time I thought was late enough like 4:00 lol . For at least a couple drinks I could be like yeah life is normal just up early drinking coffee

Turd__AuthorityIf you can't manage to drive faster than 20mph on packed powder you shouldn't be on the highway after a storm. I'm in the fast lane because it's filled with snow, had decent traction, and because people avoid it like the plague. This dude gets on the highway and cuts all the way over in front of me and is literally going 15-20mph. I'm going 40-50 as are most others. So that's cool. He's continually drifting into the other lane and at one point cuts off a semi who starts to jack knife right in front of me but thankfully recovered. Fucking christ.

ReturnToMonkeyThat first week sucked. I did not take the wrap off but I did take the brace off when needed for the first week and a half or whatever it was. Not getting direct ice definitely sucked, but it is what it is. When the nerve block wore off, the pain was unreal for a couple days.

If they gave you pills for the pain take those every now and then. Most of the pain will be gone after the first two weeks.

dognutsi hate organizing going skiing with ppl especially family, like its fun skiing with people but damn it is so much easier to rip by myself
