Advice for driving long distances

In July my friend and I are going to Virginia( liberty u for Snowflex)and it's about a 10-11 hour drive from here. Normally I'd say it wouldn't a big deal but the thing is I'm probably going to be driving the whole time because my Jeep has a standard tranny and my friend hasn't had experience driving one.

So anyways, I feel like a lot of people on NS drive far distances for ski trips and such so what helps the drive? What are some things to do/ not do? Should I try and teach my friend how to drive a standard or just drive the whole time? Anything else you guys have to offer would be awesome too.

Not worth it at all. Those long drives can get tiring and the last thing you want is to get in an accident because of kush coma. All it takes is that little bit to set you over the edge into sleepiness.

That would be my advice.

I bet you would have a blast driving on aderall or vyvance. Smoking for long drives is a terrible idea. Caffiene is also your friend. It takes a while to learn standard so teaching your friend probably wouldn't be beneficial.

If you have a friend it's pretty simple. Talk to them BOOM epic find.

Listen to music just kick it through the hours. If you're in the zone keep going. Grab some road munchies and plenty of stuff to drink.

If your friend is tired let them sleep for a while if you're in go mode. If you're falling asleep wake them the fuck up even if they're tired to help keep you awake. If you're really falling asleep pull over and take a nap.

Also you can play the get your friend to drive standard game. If need you can even yell clutch and shift the gear yourself. If it's highway they should be able to rock it out for a couple hours. The start and stop will suck but as long as you don't hit traffic they'll be fine.

I did do that with a friend on a road trip 5 years ago and we hit a traffic jam within 4 miles. And my idiot friend stayed in the middle left lane. Ended up making things fun and I didn't get any relaxation on the 20+ hours of driving the car.

looks like most things have been covered, get some music, a flask of coffee and lunch. If I'm driving 11 hours I would probably have 2-3 stops to stretch the legs and refresh. I don't know if its an easy drive or not but if it's somewhere you've never been it's good to familiarise yourself with the route before you leave, study the map for 10 mins so you know what junctions your looking for and where you should be at so many hours into your drive. Even if you have satnav it is valuable to have a mental image of where you are.

Your buddy will help you out the most with conversations. You will always find weird shit on the road that you will see to talk about. Gas stops are nice little breaks to stretch the legs and a chance to get off that sweaty ass seat that you will get no matter what even with the AC cranked.

All in all a 11 hour drive is not too bad. Interstate driving is pretty tame and I find it to be the easiest driving that you can do with less shit that you have to focus on compared to city and sketchiness of country driving(moose,deer, and drunk drivers).

Also use your cruise control. It saves gas and helps you not speed.

I've got just over 4000 miles round trip of solo road trip action coming up very soon. I've done the same drive by myself before and find that I actually listen to far less music when I am driving long distances alone. I just focus on the driving, the scenery, and let the miles fly by.

The last few road trips I did with other passengers, they have all been in one of the vehicles I owned at the time and were all manual transmission. Being that none of my other passengers could drive stick, I was stuck with being the sole driver. Since that seems to be your scenario, make your passenger responsible for your wants and needs that come up somewhere between mile 50 and 1500. Snacks, drinks, clean the sunglasses, change the music, play road trip games, and most importantly to keep your ass awake and attentive behind the wheel. If they can't chip in with quality behind the wheel action, they need to help make the drive easier on the driver (you).

Road trips are a much more interesting way of traveling in my opinion. I'd much rather drive 30 hours than deal with the hassles of the 3.5 hour flight.

Assuming you are going to be driving on a highway the entire time...your friend literally has to change gears 5 times...or 6 if your car is a 6 speed...just teach them how the day before you leave. It isn't that hard, all they have to do is do it one time and makes the drive a LOT easier.

I learned to drive stick on a 5 hour drive home with my dad on a ski trip. I just got it into fifth gear and cruised the whole way and then put in neutral and pulled into a gas station with momentum because i didn't really know what I was doing yet but it let me dad sleep for a few hours.

I drive from Montana to Pennsylvania to Georgia twice every year and the thing that always works for me is listening to stand up comedy.

For me, it makes the time go by a lot quicker than music even though I love music, it's hard to listen to for 10+ hours.

Bring some snacks too and have some fun.

Just take your friend to a big empty parking lot or a back road and teach him how to drive it. It's not that hard to learn. An hour or two and he'll have it down.

Also an audio book and snacks are great. That's what my friend and I have when we drive out west.

You'll be fine. 10 hours isn't as long as you think. On a side note though, as long as the terrain is relatively flat, someone who doesn't know how to drive a manual can drive a manual on a rural freeway pretty easily. You'll just have to help them get going on the on ramp (sit shotgun, do the shifting, tell them when to press the clutch).

They might stall but once they get moving you have highway ahead. If you need a rest try and make this happen during a time of day/area where it isn't likely to be stupidly congest.

If traffic is getting wild and they freak out can just tell them to pull over. If it's coming to stop just have them push in the clutch, put it in neutral for them and have em coast to the side and swap.

Actually almost got smashed by an asshat in a porsche while swapping with my friend doing that on a road trip. Bad traffic and some douche decided to go balls out down the should and barely stopped, then beeped at us because we were blocking him. I decided to take my sweet time on the shoulder and he eventually merged back in with traffic.



Also a bunch of people mentioned cruise control. Def good to use if you have it. Just remember to turn that shit off if you're getting really tired. The last thing you want is to chance falling asleep and have the car still on the gas trying to maintain 75/80 into a tree or guard rail.

I have an Adderall prescription, so I just take that and sing/rap for hours on end. But when I'm driving the old fashion way, I prefer the audiobook.

If you teach your friend how to get the car rolling and then shift up you can pull over on the shoulder of the highway and go from there, and when you need to get gas or something just have your friend put it in neutral and pull back over on the shoulder before the exit and switch drivers. You can totally get away with not knowing how to drive stick very well if you're just driving on the highway in no traffic

You should also listen to Ender's Game on tape if you haven't read it recently. It's one of the most entertaining audiobooks I've listened to in a while and I had already read it when i was younger. If that doesn't sound interesting then I also recommend the Steig Larsson trilogy. Audiobooks aren't necessarily about the most sophisticated literature, rather something that is going to keep you entertained and really suck you into the story

Don't have AC hahahaha probably the only 2012 vehicle on the road without it

been tracking my mileage in my mazda for 4 years... having the AC on will kill your fuel efficiency regardless of speed. plus its a fucking jeep in the summer, why use AC when you could just pop the roof and doors off?
