Runaway ski patrol sled!

I was trying to show my mum that video of the runaway ski that takes out another skier, unfortunately i couldn't find it. However I found this beauty I'd never seen before - a runaway patrol sled - WITH victim strapped in!! The video is a couple of years old and from Mammoth.

A skier left this comment on youtube

"I was there, the guy in the slow motion scene with his hands up. The patrol gal on lead buckled in the powder and blew out her knee. The sled went over her with the second patrolman hanging on to the rope and he just got pulled until he got buried behind it. He got up and chased it down. Both the sled and the patrolman caught some serious air before the sled landed and rode up into some small trees and stopped. The injured guy was super lucky he didn't die in this incident'

Yeah wicked scary, They showed this to us in training. An older patroller told me the only time you let go of your sled is if you're dead. maybe not even then.

How the hell does he lose hold of the sled when he buries in the powder!? When you see your fellow patroller buckle infront of you and get in over by the sled. its time to grab into those ropes like its someone going over a cliff and you are theyre only hope. Because in all honesty if you do let go of that rope the person in the sled could go off a cliff or even worse. NEVER LET GO. EVER

I've seen people get dumped at a mountain I used to work at. My biggest fear was having them pull me off the mountain. They did once but it was slow snow and they didn't kill me.

They should put a brake on those things that can engage to sloe it down if shits going to hit the fan. Like on an extra line that will only tighten if patrol loses their grip on the regular lines.


Some of the shit people get pulled off of is gnarly as fuck so they do a a great job overall. Hopefully that guy was some twisted adrenaline junkie and loved it.

They have a studded chain that the patroller can drop under the nose on difficult terrain. You can tell looking at that sled the patroller did not drop the chain. Our rescue sleds are really the best tool for the job. There isn't any reason not to trust patrol. That video is the only time I've ever seen anything like that happen.

Watching some of the ski patrol practice sled turns at my hill, I'm surprised I haven't seen this for myself.

At the hill I worked at we had one run away toboggan this season, and it was a volunteer who didn't realize that the run was icy so he didn't put the chain brake on, and clearly didn't communicate well with the tail roper. So we had to implement a rule that if the snow was even a tiny bit hard we had to use the chain brake. God damn vollys. Also, if that patroller didn't get fired I wonder how many kegs he had to buy for his patrol team.
