How to convince parents to allow summer set-up?

I really, really want to make a summer set-up this year and I have my own money (I have $300 set aside for this incase it ever happens) and the power tools required to do it. My backyard seems suitable for a set-up, as long as a bit of an elevated drop in is made. However, my parents refuse to let me make one because they 1. say that it is pointless and won't be fun and 2. say that I will get hurt. How do I convince them to let me make one?

tl;dr i can make a setup with my own stuff but parents say it's stupid

Make one off a structure you already. For example I get speed for mine off the slide of my swingset. Sounds ghetto and stupid but it works.

Brake it down into a few strong logical points and present it to them.

1. Your creating something that requires critical thinking
2. Your entertaining yourself outside (could be inside watching TV)
3. Something they can even help you with AKA bonding with parents*
4. No more of a chance getting hurt playing any other sport.
5. Its a physical and mental activity

If they dont go for that they are dicks. You might have big old dicks for parents.

*This is key. I'm 27 and one of my biggest regrets is not bonding with my parents more when I was younger. This is something dad (or your dads husband? or both..) can help you with.

my parent said no at first too. but i was able to change their minds by providing a structured plan as to how it would work and how it would be out of the way.
heres how i did it:
-first i used the tactics mentioned by mr perry up above. this did alot. my dad went from a NO to a YES, but my mom still said no.
- i created a detailed blueprint of how it would work, what it would look like, and how much space it would use
- i outlined the safety precautions i would take to make it work and keep my well being intact
- and finally i gave here a list of materials and a final estimated cost
- finally i begged for about a week straight and she finally gave in.

Seriously though, I would come at them with a really well thought out and drawn out plan. Things that they will be concerned about are:

How much space will it take up?

What will it cost?

How long will it take you to build it?

Are you capable of finishing it and using it vs. having a big ass structure rotting in the backyard after the first summer?

Will it kill the grass?

Consider their concerns when you are planning your set up. Don't just tell them that you are planning on building a huge scaffold, covering it with astroturf, pouring huge amounts of dish soap and water on it, which will kill every blade of grass in a 4 block radius. If your dad does any carpentry, show him plans from build-a-jib101. Try to come up with something that you can be built, installed and taken apart in sections so you can store it or move it if you have to. I would also cost out using Msnow, because you don't need water and/or soap. Show them that you have actually put some thought into this and they will be more likely to go along with it.

Maybe they're lying to him. Maybe they just don't want to see him have any fun but they've made up some concerns about safety.

The green def is good. IF you're parents hate the idea blending it in would be a plus. If it's sitting next to a fence possibly add fencing to the side of the drop in and pain it the same color. Something like that. Make it less visible.

Also don't leave rails all over the yard.


My parents wouldn't let me buy a trampoline at first, eventually had 3 all set up at once, a 12' wide mini ramp in the driveway and an 8' wide mini in the garage.

Just be calculating. Figure out what it will take and make it happen. Def make sure you have a good plan though. If you build something super jenky they might force you to abort the project. Also if you get hurt drag yourself out to the street and say a car hit you so they don't make you tear it down.

I'd say a kid (with probably very little experience with power tools because parents with power tools would probably let it fly) would have more chance getting hurt building the thing than actually skiing it.

draw up a really good plan and figure out how big each piece will have to be. if it's a really good plan, functionally and graphically, your parents are more likely to let it happen. make sure it's all measured well and take it to home depot where they'll cut all the pieces for you. take it back to your house and put it together. all you'll need is a drill and some screws.

if it works, good job! if it didn't, figure out how to make it work with what you've got, or no set up.

the biggest thing is to make it an educational experience. spatial reasoning skills ups your common sense.

Idk. Considering everyone on here is 13 or older(supposedly at least) I think they can handle power tools.

A project like this isn't insanely complex and honestly leaves some decent play for any errors. Building something like this from scratch is good for people imo. Obviously don't be an idiot with power tools but most of the thing can be built with a chop saw and power drill IF you have the chop saw on the ground and don't put your hand under it, and don't shove the drill into your hand you should be fine.

If the kid is really insanely accident prone and has little intelligence I can understand but if it's a normal kid why not. Obviously parents shouldn't want their kids to get hurt but you gotta let them live a little bit.

I feel like if you're smart enough to ride a chairlift alone you can figure out how to build a drop in that at least works without loosing an eye or any limbs.

Well lit, Knee pads(lol) back protector, gloves etc.



I always wear a back protector and helmet when I use mine.

Don't cut your hand off building it. Don't ski it drunk with flaming torches in your hands.

MLJWell lit, Knee pads(lol) back protector, gloves etc.

I mean you can wear anything you need to keep you from getting hurt but agreeing to make that mandatory is dumb. I know people that have fucked up wrists and wear wrist guards. I tried those once and they felt super awkward.

I actually used to were knee pads all the time but for some people that might be weird and useless.

I just feel like it's dumb to agree to a bunch of useless rules.

Well hav you given them any reasons it may benefit them?

Think about it you are taking up there yard space with something that will look pretty shit to most people.

So what are you giving them? Do you have a job? Do you contribute anything?

There is no way my parents or infancy most I know would ever have let us build something like that in there gardens. Is there any public land around you could use? That is what we always did for bike jumps ect.

They have subs on reddit for this. Reaches a much wider audience instead of a forum that no one would check
