Granite_StateI feel like thats something someone from the south would say. If he supports the flag that makes him a neo-confederate (unless he supports the flag just to be cool/fit in). And its common for neo-confederates to deny slavery as a cause of the civil war even though they were directly opposed to Abraham Lincoln (who supported the abolishment of slavery). Its also important to note neo-confederates were fully against the civil rights movement of the 1950-1960's. Historian David Blight writes that current neo-Confederates are "driven largely by the desire of current white supremacists to re-legitimize the Confederacy, while they tacitly reject the victories of the modern civil rights movement".

Granite_StatePoint and fact the Confederates (partially) fought against the abolishment of slavery, while the Union fought to abolish it. But you're right, there were plenty of black soldiers fought in the civil war. And many of them fought and died for their freedom. Watch Glory, based on the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. A group of men that fought and died for their freedom and the freedom of their peers. The confederates had a warped mentality (mainly based heavily in the Christian religion). Sorry you can;t deny that, it's a fact.

Yep, i'll give ya that, it's a fact and I'd look dumb trying to disprove that... Because you really can't. As fucked as it sounds slaves were a good way to make tons of profit for the plantation owners, and not every plantation owner was a guy who whipped his slaves. Some were treated fairly, you also can't deny that.
Granite_StateNo you are 100% right. Slavery is the best way to turn a profit. But it is also dehumanizing and wrong. The confederates have some great points (they were firm supports of a free market) but unfortunately they were also kinda fucked (the slavery thing).
Personally I'd like to see a "country" where all states are their own sovereign nation. Maybe one day.

Granite_StateSweet? I live in a rural area too. And reading over my posts I just want to clear something up real quick. By "country folk" I did not mean all people that live in the country side. I chose the wrong words for that. What I meant was the people that drive around in their lifted trucks blasting lynyrd skynyrd with a confederate flag waving from the bed. Yes I don't like those people. Yes I've had many dealing with people like that, and from my opinion they are not very educated. I'm sorry if that offends you.
And fyi, I'm a libertarian. Just because you think my views are similar to your idea of a liberal doesn't mean I am one.
