Mature the new immature?

The number of times I've been on newschoolers and found someone debating with me that we should be more mature, more buttoned up, and overall something that your average person can identify with astounds me.

When I was your age, everything was about rebellion and going as far against the 'man' as you possibly could.

I can't help but get this sense like that isn't as cool as it used to be. Like everyone rebelled so much that rebelling got mainstream, so the only rebellious thing to do was to be a respectable citizen and fuck the man who wants to rebel against the perfectly sensical system.

I dunno.... maybe I just don't get it anymore. So if you're a legit under 21 person please help me understand where the fuck the youth has their head right now.

I feel with the internet being so easily accessible fr just about any age, kids can learn and imitate all the crazy stuff that those who are older experience. They're growing up faster because they can have all their childhood experiences virtually.

I think it am near or in your age group Mr. Bishop and I wonder the same thing. I think since things are becoming more open, there isn't as much to rebel against. Marijuana is becoming legal, as far as I can tell, religious morals are not the standard anymore so more parents are becoming more open minded and punish kids less for stupid shit. They dont really have the need to rebel against parents and the man is heading in the progressive direction and there isn't really a war to rebel against anymore. Music also has a big influence on this IMO and the things in music right now are "fuck the man for oppressing (insert oppressed group here)". My two cents

That's a good point as well, religious morals are definitely becoming less important. For example, abstinence before marriage is pretty unheard of now.

With the rise of "political correctness" and "social justice" I think rebelling has taken on a new role. We have the medium of the internet that can reach so many people quicker than before. If anything, kids today (like generations before) are attempting to show that they are up to date and involved in their world.

but also teenagers are dicks, and being "mature" show supremacy and #swag, or at least it did in middle school.

(currently 19, totally fit that age group)

To tell you the truth, this movie is what got me thinking about this. That move was absolutely backwards from what would have been cool back in my high school days.

This is a very interesting point and got me thinking about this topic.

I think kids are starting to realize that they're "mature" role models are a collective group of homophobic, ignorant racists. Rather than "rebel against the man" and fuck the system, they're form of rebellion is fixing the shit their parents fucked up.

They see that rather than being able to walk away from college with a degree and safely get a job (like their parents could), the economy has gotten so righteously fucked from each generation's selfishness that nothing is safe anymore. Unless they're comfortable with living in their parents' houses or on the street, they have to be the mature ones.

The general disarray of society at the hands of our elders has forced each younger generation into a collective group of cynical old farts who don't like people and understand that if they abuse credit and borrow money, their children are going to be even more fucked than they feel they've been.

This is also contributing to the decrease in young people procreating. There are some very interesting articles about the potential steady decline of intelligent people because the smart kids are smart enough to know the world is getting worse and they're not willing to bring someone else into it. Meanwhile, the stupid people who continue to drag down our economy and general social benchmark are breeding like rabbits.

It is more along these lines, with Jonah being the cool kid when he goes back and Channing says that it is all backwords. But it isnt anything to be worried about because it is just like a new fad that comes and goes. I bet people in the generations before adults now had similar thoughts about the younger generations. It is just different generations.

The general state of Anomie is only ONE social theory. If you want to look at a social element, you need to do it with at least a few more. Come up with multiple explanations and test each one rather than just saying

I blame the hipsters. They made it cool to be 'un-cool.' The new cool thing to do was to go to mellow shows and listen to 'alternative' music and then nurse a couple of really shitty beers while you got slightly stoned at someone's house. No energy to run around and blow up mailboxes or light cats on fire.

I think another aspect of it is that not everything you or I did was documented for the internet. Now you can't pick your noes without it ending up on social media. Kids now have grown up with social media and smart phones as part of their lives. I think they have an understanding that it is not as easy to go out and be stupid anymore, but rather that shit will come back to haunt you.

What that movie depicted as cool in high school definitely isn't true. I'm sure there is more of a concern for the environment in schools than there was in the 90's or whenever the fuck you old people went to school, but trust me, those fags don't run the school

So who does run the school? What kind of social groups are there, and who is dominant? Yeah, it was definitely the 90s when I went to highschool.

It was actually awesome, because it was 1994, Nirvana was the most popular band in the universe and the cool thing to do was be in a band and wear less than $20 worth of clothing you bought at second hand stores. The grunge days were fucking awesome.

Dude that is exactly what the fuck I'm talking about. This fucking indie hipster emo screamo whatever bullshit is so wishy-washy it makes me want to puke. The message behind the music used to be something you could stand behind. Something you could draw a line in the sand and make a statement about who you are and what you meant.

I mean even the 90s pales in comparison to how shit was in the 60s and 70s. They had legit anti-war messages, racism... real shit to stand for.

To be honest, I don't even know at this point. Me, being 18 and going to college in a couple months I'm more involved in politics then I have ever been. Debts, possible draft for upcoming wars, all this shit i never thought I'd have to worry about until it smacked me in the face. I see kids in my local middle school who don't even know what political party Obama supports. I feel like the type of modern day music people are listening too reflects this greatly. People are too worried about partying, smoking, getting "hecka fucked up". If bands like Rage and other anti war/political protesting musical geniuses were still around today having as big of an influence as they did back 30 or so years ago then we wouldn't be having this conversation right now
