Editing Pet Peeves?

When people use reverse speed in their videos and play the clips backwards, or if they do "instant replay" in a skiing video.

FYI thats a natural vignette from the lens aj was using with his camera, the only wide he had was 10-20 and only had a speed booster so it vignettes. Just sayin

(yes they can be used effectively...but rarely)

When the cuts sync perfectly with the beat.

This is attractive to newcomers (I'm just as guilty of doing this in my younger years as the next guy), but it's really a stale and uninspiring way to edit.

Editing is a form of music, and like music, all the parts should form a cohesive whole by being in time without being in sync. Imagine a song where each player can only hit a note/beat at the exact same time - nothing inbetween. Sounds like shit, right? Well, the same applies to editing. The relationship between visuals and sound should have a cadence, but not a synchronization.

In a similar vein, if everyone cut their shots tighter and made their edits half as long, they'd be twice as good. Less = more.

So much this. It's like an Instagram filter of video editing.

I hate film burns, especially in "professional" edits. You're not shooting film so quit it with the lazy pre-set film-look editing. If you're going for the old school film look, go all out. If not, stay far away from it. I'd say the same about any look but this is what really bothers me.

Also, discrepancy in color correction through an edit (especially when random shots are in b&w). Make up your mind and stick with it. Coloring sets a mood and I don't watch edits to go on an emotional roller coaster. That's what chick flicks are for.
