I know there are more brown pow lovers on this site, yah there is pinkbike but lets be honest, newshcoolers is wayyyy cooler. so lets posts our rides, questions about components, mechanic questions etc in this thread.

I just bought this beauty and i definitely sacrificed uphill capabiltiy in order to get a beefier dh/park bike. id been on a nomad for a while and it's a huge switch in riding styles for me. definitely getting used to the weight and having to keep speed a lot more.

specs for said beauty, 2011 rc2 dh totem, 2012 dhx rc4, highrollers front and back (gona go dhf front and highroller in the back), mtx 33 wheel set, slx brakes, diablous cranks, FSA 760mm Handlebar, Shimano SLX Shifter & Shimano Deore XT Derailleur.

partyandBSYo! So ive never had a bike with gears lol. Lookin to get an enduro to ride some single track around summit county and once or twice a year hit some lift access. My slope with 100 mm front and back get buck wild at Trestle lol.

so when buying a used bike is there any sort of check list of what to check for? I think i have a solid idea but would love the help. Thanks!

gonna look at my buddies Evil Wreckoning which I know hes rode hard as hes a shredder. Also gonna look at an Evil Offering that im under the impression a mom is selling now that her son is out of the house but idk.


Right now is a good time of the year to buy bike shop employee’s and racer’s 1 year old bikes. They are usually in great shape or in absolutely dismal shape. Look at the paint in a listing, if it’s excessively scratched up that’s a pretty big red flag. If the bike is covered in mud in the listing pics that’s another big red flag. Try not to get anything older than ~2018 model year so the frame is compatible with current design standards and has good geometry etc.

if the listing has like 2 sentences total, don’t even bother. Look for bikes that the owner wrote a few paragraphs and a full spec list for the description. Those are the dudes you wanna buy from. Good luck!

Ask if the pivots or suspension has been serviced, measure the chain to see if it's trashed, look for cracks really good, rip on it a bit to make sure there's no pops or creaks or anything sus, check all the bolts.

I see you’re point, but I just hit Galibraith in Bellingham last Wednesday and it was awesome. Right now there is snow on the ground in the lowlands where I live, but once it’s gone I’ll be back to the dual threat of skiing and riding

If you're looking for frame only, try to find a new frame that someone took all the parts off, or one that hasn't been used a ton. be careful though, some people will try to sell ones with small cracks in them or something. I would say its a good idea though, less people are in the market for frames only, which raises your chances of scoring a sweet deal.

My friend just got one of these bikes, he said it's a dream come true. best all around aluminum mid-travel bike out there for the price. 10/10 would recommend.

I got mine 2020 and I love it. I take it to Deer Valley bike park and on bigger pedal rides alike. It does everything I want it to do. I wish the build options had shimano groups back then. I got the NX and if I keep it next summer I'll upgrade to slx fasho.

The biggest difference you will feel (in my opinion) when upgrading from the lowest spec is how the shifter and brake levers feel. If you go with a better build spec right away it might eliminate some desire to upgrade later, however if you do upgrade later you may have the excuse to put the deore stuff on a townie bike or somethin. I have only briefly handled the new deore and SLX stuff and they both feel pretty good, but SLX feels more precise and direct. I have much more experience riding low tier SRAM stuff and lemme tell ya, the difference in feel between SX, NX, and GX is insane, SX and NX are absolute dogshit, I dunno if I'm a huge fan of GX honestly but it feels lightyears ahead of the lower spec shit.
I kinda like that I went with a lower spec build on my bikes since I knew I was going to be upgrading stuff anyway, and it seems like a little better of a value since I got to choose where I wanted to min/max components and I'm not necessarily being wasteful since the stuff that gets upgraded ends up on my townie bikes or on bikes of friends/community when parts end up at the local co-op.

Yeah. Agreed. New Deore is honestly awesome. I bought a Deore Patrol this fall, and swapped the parts over to my partner's bike. After a few months, the shifting is still awesome, and the brakes feel great. She's upgrading to an XT shifter for multi-shift, but otherwise, she likes how it feels better than the GX with Code R's she came off of, and I like how easy it is to work on. I don't really see a reason to jump from Deore to SLX other than weight.

So. Story time, I put Advent X on my Patrol after I gave my drivetrain to my partner, and I've had mixed experiences with it. I'm switching to Shimano 1x11 next spring, with the Advent cassette. It shifts and pedals as well as GX Eagle in my experience, but I just can't get there to be enough chain tension. Even with the clutch turned all the way up, my chain is flapping harder than it has since the 2x days. It's all over the place. And I actually dropped a chain, even with a chain guide, which hasn't happened in maybe five years? So for an XC or even a trail bike in some areas it seems fine, but anywhere with rougher and more technical trails at high speeds, I can't justify it. But if it woks for someone, that's awesome, it's so affordable and easy to set up.

Pretty sweet retro build, what's the fork on that? most importantly, does it adjust at all? My current manitou circus fork on my dj is simply too soft.

SR Suntour XCT. It’s poppy, has lockout and preload. Feels really responsive.

Don't wanna seem like a hater, but the last time I had a Suntour XC* fork it had one of those "not intended for extreme use" stickers on it. That being said I've seen people with some very clapped out hodgepodge builds at the jumps and they send harder than me.

Nah I know what you mean. I did some digging and the XCT fork isn’t a bad option all things considered. It doesn’t have that warning sticker on it as well, so that’s a plus 😂

I rode one of those forks for about 2 years because it came with the bike I bought. It was a sketchy POS. It felt like it never compressed any of it's 80mm of travel until it randomly decides to bottom out. Honestly landing flat or just riding around on my steel bmx feels 100x smoother.

In the years since I got that bike, the quality of parts available at the budget/entry level has grown a lot. Honestly I'm envious lol.

Get Gx or above if you're gonna bother to upgrade, the clutch is so much better.

Started on the Great Spring Drivetrain Swap this afternoon, only to be stymied by my lack of a 1.85 mm cassette spacer. So now we wait. Too bad it's too expensive to just swap the whole family's bikes to Shimano and have everything be cross compatible.
