I know there are more brown pow lovers on this site, yah there is pinkbike but lets be honest, newshcoolers is wayyyy cooler. so lets posts our rides, questions about components, mechanic questions etc in this thread.

I just bought this beauty and i definitely sacrificed uphill capabiltiy in order to get a beefier dh/park bike. id been on a nomad for a while and it's a huge switch in riding styles for me. definitely getting used to the weight and having to keep speed a lot more.

specs for said beauty, 2011 rc2 dh totem, 2012 dhx rc4, highrollers front and back (gona go dhf front and highroller in the back), mtx 33 wheel set, slx brakes, diablous cranks, FSA 760mm Handlebar, Shimano SLX Shifter & Shimano Deore XT Derailleur.

Yeah, Big Sky is the perfect place to convince someone that A) they like riding, and B) they need a better bike.

any1 know if the Commencal Meta is any good? they seem heavy but im not much of a weight weenie. I feel like it would be a bomber bike though

I've heard nothing but good things about them. The only thing that's keeping me from buying a Meta tr is that they're stocked with 2 pot breaks instead of 4 and the AM is too big for my purposes.

Pick a wheelsize and travel amount, then narrow your choices down.



For 29er aluminum "enduro" bikes, the Meta and Ibis Ripmo AF would be my top picks

The ripmo af is badass. I'd go ibis over any dtc brand imo. Not that commencal is bad but having a good shop go to bat for you if you need to warranty something is worth gold.

I've got a 2019 Meta TR 29. It's a great bike. It's pretty capable and well rounded, kinda heavy but I really don't think that matters all that much.

Everyone knows that if your bike is over 30 lbs, climbing and jumping is next to impossible. You aren't allowed to ride XC trails on bikes over 28 lbs.

Last summer I nearly got the ripmo af, but I'm in the same boat as you. I went giant trance x, I really like it for what I ride. Can't beat giant's spec/price too. But if you're looking for more meat ripmo's where it's at.

It's no heavier than any other similarly spec'd aluminum frame. The DW link makes you forget about the weight for most trails, anyway.

My first full suspension trail bike was a nearly 40 pound pound Kona Coiler. I only weight about 105 pounds at the time. I think you'll be fine.

Yeah, my friend was saying the same thing. He's got a 35 pound stumpy evo and says it's really not bad at all.

So by better bike do you mean longer travel or just more durable components and better suspension? Because I'm trying decide if I should spend my money on a beater DH bike or wheel and suspension upgrades for my trail bike this spring.

I know plenty of people that have talked themselves into the beater DH bike thing, and it's never made any sense to me. Especially at Big Sky. Sure, Big Sky has some trails that would maybe be more fun on a DH bike, but there's not really anything there that "requires" one. And if you're going to ride up there you might as well crank a Mountain to Meadow at the end of the day, which would suck on a DH bike.

The Pinkbike podcast on DH bikes does a pretty good job of laying out the cost/value proposition there. If I was going on another Whistler trip and planning to ride only bikepark for a week, I'd rent a DH bike, otherwise, my Enduro is just fine.

A "cheap" dh bike is never going to feel as good as a trail/am/enduro/whatever bike with dialed components and suspension that's not haggard. And then you're going to break parts on your cheap DH bike and want to upgrade them, and then it's not going to be a cheap bike anymore haha.

My trailbike is pretty damn versatile and capable, but from what I've heard from friends who frequent Big Sky, it can be pretty rocky and can put wheels and tires to the test. I definitely agree that as trail bikes have progressed DH bikes make less sense, even for people who ride lifts a decent amount.

I'm thinking I'll end up renting a DH or enduro bike for my GF when I can convince her to come to the bike park. It's easier for me to sell her on the adventure side than the adrenaline side of mountain biking, so I'll probably be looking for a decent hardtail that will be good for a nice balance of trail riding and bikepacking.

Went for a ride this weekend. I’m very out of shape. It was only mountain biking because the trail was in the mountains, otherwise it was just 10 miles of boring, sluggish, groomed, wide trail. Would be a hell of a lot more fun if there were more winter biking single track trails. There are a few trails around town that are packed down and trafficked enough to bike on and be fun though

Nice MRP. Love my Ribbon Air. Get some better decals that match your frame better though! Also, try Fidlock for a hydration system. It's the only one I could get to fit my Ibis.

Made the megatower barspinnable. Just need to pick up a longer dropper hose and bleed everything and it’ll be ready to go.




Or maybe I’ll keep the suicide shifter dropper lever setup and save my pennies for a transfer ?

Not at the moment, they’re at 780 so I’ll see how the clearance is first!

I couldnt even clear my saddle with them at 770, ended up around 710, but thats definetly overkill on clearance. honestly makes the bike pretty fun tho

It’s totally worth the wait though. It feels almost like a dh bike but youcan still play around on easier trails with it. Super solid bike
