Baseball is a dying sport

I used to play baseball, I used to enjoy it too. But when I got to the high school the teams I played on started trying to act "professional" with the coaches yelling at players thinking that it helps. It just really made me sick how the game I loved to play got ruined by people trying to make it extremely competitive. I could play at the college level but I can't take the egotistical shitstorm between coaches and players- part of the reason why I got into skiing.

I still throw bull pen sessions by myself and tee off in 90mph batting cages. Currently have a fastball in the mid-80s, a pretty lame slider, but a filthy curveball. /claim

The little league world series can burn in hell for all I care. Baseball is America's greatest past-time, not America's greatest method of exploiting and pressuring the shit out of kids.

Can't wait for the post season after this A's / Royals game. I think you have to have played to be able to understand the game. I get how people don't enjoy baseball because it requires intelligence, coordination, strategy, and of course skill... they're not just throwing a ball into a hoop here..


But anyways I'm down for a Cardinals, Pirates, or Royals world series title.

My brother felt the same way as you about high school ball. I think a lot of that has to with parents as well. From what my brother would say, especially stories he'd tell me about umping the games for the younger kids, some parents took that shit way too seriously. I mean come on, yelling at umps about their calls? Come on, it's fucking majors, it's a skill development league. Let the kids have fun and take it as seriously as they want to. My dad was kinda like that too, and I think it took the fun out of it for him a lot. He was just out there to have fun and his dad was trying to take it way too seriously trying to get him playing and practicing all the damn time going to all these camps in the off season. I think that's why he started nordic skiing, he knew his dad wouldn't care as much about it.

I don't think that's exclusive to baseball though. Seems like every sport has people like that. When I ski raced in college some of my teammates had fucking crazy parents like that. I was glad that my parents would only show up to the race at our home mountain.

I love the game of baseball. To me it is like a big game of chess. It is an art and can be so intense when you are playing.

However, just like you baseball was ruined for me in high school; both by the players and by the coach. The coach was an arrogant dickwad, and the kids were just as bad. I didn't fit it and therefore they made my life a living hell. I stopped playing and switched to track (which is also dope). I still love the game, but i wish high schools didn't take the thing so seriously. After all it is just a game.

I think the people in Baseball are leading it down. I can only speak form softball expire, but my coach RUINED the sport for me.

I don't see any difference in interest in the sport. For me, it's just too slow and boring to watch. I enjoy going to baseball games for the atmosphere, but when I go I usually don't pay all that much attention to the game and just talk to friends.

I'd be much more interested if there was like a 15 second time limit in between pitches to keep the game moving. I would 100% be way more interested if the batting team got to throw a couple of players out in the field to try to disrupt plays (obviously that would never, ever happen, just something I've always thought would make the game more interesting to me).

...I'm just glad this season's over. I don't think I could have dealt with even more heartbreak from Oakland at this point. They shattered my dreams like always.

baseball is not a dying sport. Everyone saying that there is a shit load of money in baseball, you are just fooling yourself. My coach for my select travel team played 15 years for the Cards, currently scouts for them, and coaches not only 6 youth teams but also a collegiate summer ball team has always said, there is not money in baseball. If you are an incredible major league player than ya you make bank. Any other aspect of baseball is scrambling for a couple dollars. Money gets raked in in the form of fan profit. That profit gets spent in turn on maintenance of stadiums, training facilities, new equipment, paying players, paying employees, accommodation of players, transportation of players, ect.... As you can see there is a ton of stuff that money goes into.

Youth baseball IS dying. Little league is a joke in most places. Besides select kids from cali and the caribbean that can really huck a baseball and hit a dinger or 2 most kids are just little snots that won't even play high school ball. But that's ok, we don't want them playing anyway cause they suck. I've also found that kids who are stars at 9, 10, and 11 end up coasting, loosing their natural skill, get surpassed by those who put in the work, and eventually end up either not playing anymore or making second or third string varsity as a senior. kids with real talent won't plateau. A kid on the varsity team for my high school is ranked #5 top MLB draft prospect in all of New England. The kid rakes. He works his ass off and it shows.

wouldn't say its dying but its definitely past its prime. I think American Football is the future to be honest.

I play baseball. The reason I like it, is because like skiing it really takes your mind off everything. For a couple hours your focused on nothing but the game or whatever. Plus there's so much time to fuck around. And you can fail so often and just be like "hey that's the game of baseball" shits sweet.
