Post reasons for not wanting to live in or near Seattle and I will shoot them down because Seattle is fucking awesome and everyone should be jealous of the people that live there.

fragglemuffinSo true.
Thizzle.I've never even heard of a Paseo sandwich and I have lived outside Seattle for all of my life that I can remember.
shocker611haha that looks atrocious, almost as bad as dayton
cobra_commanderI just drove through Sioux Falls, SD. Now that place sucks.

last_tangonowhere near as bad as dayton. Been to both places. I wouldn't call the manch a city though. For New Hampshire though it is its largest "city". Its a place that you want to visit but you don't want to live in.
division.bellSouth Dakota is definitely up there as one of the worst states to drive through. Lots of cool places to see in the far western side of the state near the Black Hills, but the rest fucking blows.
vandersteezeGod damn you are driving slow as shit
dilla_says_gonobody gives a shit.
Thizzle.Classic case of jealousy, sorry man maybe someday you will be in a position to enjoy the best part of the nation.
californiagrownAnd hopefully some day you will get out of the backwoods and see what the world has to offer...

Thizzle.I will! Don't get me wrong, I want to travel as many places as possible and I do not deny the wonders of anywhere else in the world. I left WA for college and plan on traveling abroad and domestically quite considerably. I just love where I grew up and have a huge sense of pride for the Pacific Northwest and believe it is one of the finest and most well rounded areas of the nation.
BandoleroAnyone who has watched a full season of "The Killing" will stay hundreds of miles away from Seattle. If you love living in gray drizzle all the time, and obnoxious yuppy white people, you'll love Seattle.

snobunnyDriving through SD is 1000000 x more entertaining, than driving through Wyoming.
division.bellAt least Wyoming goes by quicker. Not to mention it's far easier to entertain yourself on the road while gawking at the "quality of life" of some of the rural inhabitants of some of the outlying shit holes. I can never tell if some of the folks are trying to show off with their massive collection of rusting vehicles, RV's, and miscellaneous farm equipment scattering their yards in front of their immobile mobile home.
South Dakota is just rolling field after rolling field without much enjoyable scenery after you get east of the Black Hills and before you cross the Missouri. Not to mention the overabundance of annoying Wall Drug signs. I've made the drive so many times now, I just want to get through South Dakota as quickly as possible. Granted it's never that easy as heading west into Wyoming sucks and heading east into Minnesota sucks as well. I started taking HWY212 out of Belle Forche, SD and links back up with I90 near the Little Bighorn park. It's a 2 lane country highway that has been recently resurfaced over the past few years and has a 70mph speed limit. Much more enjoyable and you literally drive through Wyoming for all of a few minutes, and there weren't any signs telling me when I entered or left Wyoming's borders.
californiagrownI'm moving to Seattle 1st of October. My job is in Kirkland, where should I live? I don't want a shitty commute. I'm thing a midrange 1bdrm in Bellevue, but am open to anything.
Currently live in sf, and am not overly stoked on the big city feel...
Any advice for this transplant...other than to go fuck myself?

snobunnyThis will get downvoted for sure.
I understand why everyone says Seattle has bandwagon fans...and its because our Seahawks fanbase multiplied when we became good.
However, there are also people from the Seattle area who have been fans of the Seahawks during good times and bad for several decades.
So although I get why everyone says that...over, and over, and over...and over......and over....and...wait for it......over, its annoying that fans who aren't bandwagon fans are also shot down and called band wagon for no real apparent reason.
Apparently everyone from every other city in the U.S. thinks (or just refuses to believe and/or admit) that the Seahawks didn't have a single fan and/or follower prior to the current team.
That's insulting for us who watched them lose over, and over...and wait for it......over, again.
And maybe it happened here more than other cities, but I feel like any other fairly new sports city that did well, would have just as many bandwagoners, no? I mean how is Seattle unique in that regard?
Regardless, there are fans that didn't become fans in 2012, regardless of what every other team's fans insist.
The biggest bandwagon fan of all....the media.
division.bellIf you want to avoid a shitty commute, stay as close to your place of employment as possible. I405 is horrible during the morning and afternoon commutes. Check out alternate methods of travel via surface streets so you can have some options; there are plenty in that general area, but it is easy to get stuck in the mindless stop and go of traffic.
Check out the Seattle traffic on WSDOT's website here; http://www.wsdot.com/traffic/seattle/default.aspx
If you are able to check that site during your anticipated commutes before you arrive you can get a sense of how fucked the travel is. Not to mention that being in the Kirkland area forces you to either pay the toll to drive across Lake Washington via 520, driving north around the lake to get into the city, or driving south on 405 until you meet up with westbound I90 to share the toll-free interstate with everyone else heading into the city. Just something to consider.
When I moved to WA I originally had a 20 mile commute that averaged over an hour each direction. I've learned my lesson tremendously.
I hate big cities as well for the most part, but it's pretty easy to get away from the hustle and bustle of big city life without too much effort. Bellevue is a large city relatively speaking with tons going on, but it's nothing like what you'd be dealing with down in Cali. Seattle has it's moments, but is generally pretty easy to navigate unless you get stuck in traffic without options.
snobunnyok, yeah-- east SD has to suck. I've made the drive from Rapid to Pierre so many times...and this last time I took my husband for the first time. As we crossed into SD, I said "be prepared, SD is home of the road side gimmick"...which of course I'm sick of, because I've seen them a million times-- Sturgis, black hills, deadwood, reptile gardens, wall drug, badlands, crazy horse, mt. rushmore (not that those two are gimmicks)...anyhow, to see someone see it for the first time reminded me that those things are actually pretty cool-- especially black hills/Sturgis/deadwood and the badlands. So if you're a first timer-- its fairly entertaining on the west half of the state.
snobunny(my shift is 7-3:30)
division.bellThis is the most relevant detail here.
If you're heading in and out early, there is very little traffic and you can actually enjoy the scenery during your drive. It's amazing how much can change by an hour or two though.
snobunnyso true.
If I went in late (9-ish) from Bellevue my 20 minute commute would turn into 40-45 minutes, and my Redmond to Seattle commute goes from 30 to 45-1 hour.
Same with coming home. Its amazing how I-90 goes from free-ballin at 3:30 to jammed at 5.
DingoSeanCalifornia is the worst state on the west coast partially because of its presence of burrito-munchers. And no, I'm not talking about Hispanics.

CoreyTrevorSo do you hate mountains and topography? I literally can't think of a single place in Wyoming that is flat. Rolling hills at most, and there are always mesas and mountains just a few miles away. Comparing Wyoming unfavorably to any midwestern state is a crime against humanity. You must have forgotten how shitty those states are. Black Hills are pretty decent, but there's no way SD is better to drive through than Wyoming
DingoSeanwtf?
dylholeSan Juan Islands are cool, but even the most common ferry to get to them is an hour+ from seattle. Sounder's fanbase is also legit. But traffic is awful, mountains are far away, you have only 3 months of sun, and it rains a lot. Plus, being surrounded by salt water, there isn't anywhere close to surf. Not my cup of tea personally, but everyone should stay/ski the PNW and leave SLC empty
snobunnyWe have rivers to float. We have lots of local mountains in-city/town (Si, Squak, Cougar, Tiger) that aren't big enough to be ski hills, but are big enough to accommodate great hikes or mountain biking, sky diving, or hang gliding.
The ski hills aren't far at all (1 hour) and are even closer for those who live on the east side or closer to North Bend/Snoqualmie.
And although the San Juans aren't 5 minutes from Seattle, they're aren't far either. You can go on a trip to the San Juans on any given weekend and feel like you're on vacation. Go clamming, crabbing, fishing (also, what about Vashon?). Go to Mt. Rainier and take a hike. Also, you can go out to the coast and surf or fish at Westport and, we're only a couple of hours in the opposite direction from dry climate where you can catch rays even when its raining in Seattle (lake Chelan, Gorge for concerts)...Plus we have alki and ballard.
